Homeschoolers Disrespected on Ebert & Roeper
Ebert & Roeper ^ | 6/18/07

Edited on 06/18/2007 1:15:58 PM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

I was just watching Ebert & Roeper and would like to report to my fellow homeschoolers that the guest host taking Roger Ebert's place tonight, Robert Wilonsky, made a very disrespectful and rude comment in relation to homeschoolers...

While reviewing the upcoming movie "Nancy Drew" Roeper made a comment that Nancy was a 1950's girl in relation to what she thought constituted a birthday party. When Roeper said that this would be a good movie that would be liked by 12-year-old girls, Wilonsky replied, "Maybe Homeschooled 12-year-olds"...

I found this to be a very ignorant and disrespectful comment, and I am left wondering what Mr. Wilonsky thinks would be better suited for 12-year-old Public Schooled/Private Schooled students to be watching (Sex, Drinking & Drugs???)?

I would like to ask my fellow homeschool parents to write to both Ebert & Roeper (Buena Vista Entertainment) as well as Mr. Wilonsky himself, and express your displeasure with this disrespectful comment.

Here is how to contact the show & Mr. Wilonsky...

Ebert & Roeper Show: http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/ebertandroeper/ Use the "Feedback" link at the top navigation bar to submit a comment.

Mr. Wilonsky: I could only find one email address online for Mr. Wilonsky (he also writes at RottenTomatoes.com, as well as the Village Voice, L.A. Weekly, and the Phoenix New Times). Here is his email address through his employer the Dallas Observer:

Robert.Wilonsky@dallasobserver.com

In my comment to the Ebert & Roeper show I requested not only that they do not bring Mr. Wilonsky back for any more co-hosting gigs, but also that they issue an on-air apology to all homeschooled students.

I stand corrected as to Bob Jones IV.

I am also, however, entitled to my opinion of your opinion and you know how low an opinion that is. Objectively and justifiably so since you actually have the temerity to defend the indefensible training ground of the leftists known as gummint skewels. Be sure to get back to us when your kids turn leftward. Meanwhile, you and other love slaves of the National Education Associaton pay all of the exorbitant bills for the gummint brainwashing of those kids abandoned to the gummint skewels and leave conservatives' earnings alone.

That should help you get your facts straight.

Actually I don't defend public schools as an institution, you've misunderstood me entirely. I defend only those schools with which I have enough familiarity to make a statement as to whether the school is run in a reasonable fashion. How could anyone defend the nonsense that is Detroit public schools or Washington DC schools? If I were so cursed as to live in a district such as that, my children would never have been enrolled there. Furthermore, the NEA is indefensible. I have never been a member and never will be, assuming of course I remain in a 'right to work state' and am not forced into one.

As to the leftward leaning of my children, again you have missed the mark - both girls are very conservative and very grounded in our religion. Any parent who leaves the responsibility of their child's spiritual and moral training to another gets exactly what they deserve. My husband and I did neither. At 17 and 20, I could not be prouder of their morals, but it was not left to chance - ever.

You never bothered to read what I wrote - all you did was overlay your opinions and expectations over my statements and twist it into some sort of odd debate. Attacking a fellow conservative is in poor taste - what say we leave the attacking to those we have huge differences with rather than try to find ways to mock another over imagined slights and some imaginary 'scale of conservatism."

Hey buddy, Gabz is my friend, and she has always, always, unstintingly, supported me in my homeschooling efforts. She is not a public-school doormat, far from it. You don’t know her, you haven’t met her, but I have. Your remarks are really, quite unnecessary, I assure you.

That’s nice but people may reasonably be judged on what they post. I don’t know you either.

Also the conflict was not over whether someone "supports" your homeschooling or not. The SCOTUS already did that definitively in Pearce v. the Society of Sisters in 1927. The current contention is over whether gummint skewels should exist at all to brainwash the children of the indolent in the doctrines of our enemies at our expense. On that matter, well-meaning is not the equivalent of acting appropriately. Assuming the well-meaning part, which is not to be taken for granted, respect must still be earned the old-fashioned way. Respect is not an entitlement of some sort like "self-esteem" for the little denizens trapped in gummint skewels who cannot spell or read or do math but are encouraged in "self-esteem" regardless. This is a mindset of: "Everyone wins and all will have prizes." The very sort of idiocy that characterizes gummint skewels and explains their descent from mediocrity.

I gather that there are reasons WHY you homeschool, other than a coin flip or something. Are your reasons unique to your family and your kids and inapplicable to the children abandoned to PS 666? So long as there are gummint skewels, parents make the decisions and many will dump their kids there but they DO NOT PAY THE FREIGHT even for the ideological and spiritual perversion of their own kids (or mostly pay attention to that ongoing process because it is inconvenient to "free" babysitting).

Do the leftists, atheists, agnostics, ape-worshipers, et al., have a RIGHT to your tax money and mine to run their leftist training camps so long as (other than money) they leave us alone? That is how people in the soviet union lived.

I also would observe that you are making an unwarranted assumption in calling me “buddy” at least at this point.

The issue is still: SHOULD gummint skewels be suffered to exist? For the reasons previously stated, NO!

Homeschoolers have proms, too, you know. There are homeschooled parents who get together with others all the time. Shows how ignorant you are.

The homeschooled kids I know are much better off emotionally, physically, spiritually and every other way than public school misfits.

I've noticed that this type of zero sum game extremism has almost totally taken over FR in the last few months.

One guy hammered me for being a big government liberal because I didn't support privatizing municipal police and fire departments, and the IDers have been chastisizing everyone who doesn't believe the Earth is 6,000 years old as being un-Christian.

I guess the collapse of the Bush presidency has led many to board up their brains like a house before a hurricane.

Your comments are just as ignorant as you accuse mine of being. But hey, if I hadn’t said it, you’d never be able to be such a Johnny Come Lately to such a long dead thread. Please leave me the hell alone.

Well said! Right on. “I guess the collapse of the Bush presidency has led many to board up their brains like a house before a hurricane.” So true.

I'll admit, a few years ago, I got educated about homeschoolers here on FR. I shared the stereotypes about kids who were socially isolated, and pretty much just taught Christianity, without a knowledge of the wider world.

In Ebert and Roeper's world, the few kids they know go either to the government schools in a well-financed district, or more likely, to some sort of expensive private academy. It's not that they are trying to be jerks, they just don't know any better.

The best cure for blind prejudice is knowledge. Hopefully, these gentlemen can acquire some.

Everybody on FR is a buddy to me, because they are usually nice people! It's a compliment, it's a shame you don't want to think so.

However you did post to me three times! So what's with that?

I am not disagreeing with your point of view. I am not a fan of big government either. The whole thing is on the verge of collapse. However, I cannot in good conscience stand by and read a post that insults a good friend. Surely, you can understand that. My friend Gabz is not against educational freedom (i.e. homeschooling etc.), that is the point I was making.

In your opinion, there should be no schools whatsoever - all parents should pay for 100% of the cost of their child’s education in a private or home setting. Have I misrepresented what you have said in that statement? Would you also include community colleges, universities, med schools, law schools and other institutions of higher learning in that statement?
