A new public opinion poll shows a majority of the American people do not see a danger in Chinas economic and military buildup, demonstrating that Beijing's efforts to influence public opinion in the United States have been successful.
The poll, conducted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and WorldPublicOpinion.org in conjunction with research centers around the world, found that a majority of citizens in eight of 14 countries surveyed (and a plurality in four) expect China to catch up with the United States economically and that they are not worried about it.
Less than a third of respondents believe China's rise will be "mostly negative," with majorities in most countries anticipating a mixed or positive outcome.
However, the poll also shows that a majority or near majority of respondents in most countries do not trust China will act responsibility beyond its borders.
Most Asians, for example, favor a continuing U.S. security presence to counter China.
A lot of people don’t mind their Chinese consumer electronics lasting for only a year or two before they fall apart; that’s about the time they’d decide to upgrade anyway.
I might get suckered into a $29 DVD player at Christmas, but ain’t no way I’ll buy, drive, or be a passenger in a Chinese-made car or airplane. We’ll see failures in those vehicles we’ve never had before, or even imagined could happen.
However, the poll also shows that a majority or near majority of respondents in most countries do not trust China will act responsibility beyond its borders.
This "poll" is one big contradiction. Anyway unfortunatly most humans are idiots/sheep anyway.
I have nothing against a higher quality of life and economic sucsess for china or anyone for that matter. However, That sucsess comes at a price to our of interests and must be metered very closely so that we maitain the edge.
If we arent bitching that they are beating us we are bitching that they are starving.
One thing is certain in my mind, In order for ther to be a winner there must be a loser. We should be very careful about Trade with China.

Where did they take these polls,Walmart ???
We have to like China.
They are financing the Bush tax deferments and spending splurges.
Bush calls this “supporting democracy in China.”
It’s contradictory, but doesn’t matter since China will catch up about when cows fly.
The premise of the poll is wrong as are most polls put out by the DBM. China has an aging population and no infrastructure. China will get old be it gets anywhere close to even with the US.
In another 2O years, China will be passed by India.
Most of America could not find China on a map and many would just think China is something you eat off of.
Im Betting on India as well but India has major infrastructure problems.
China just takes what they need. Need a road BAM! They take land from the people to build it. Need a Factory? Bam! they take the land.
India is a democacy with like 39 parties and when you propose a factory their, there is a democratic response to the proposal and all voices are heard. The process is slow, like here in the US perhaps slower, but it is just.
What will likely break China is its unjust policys at home and abroad
“There, There”

Pretty much what people said about Japanese made goods not too long ago ...
Poll would probably find that most of the world would be cool with China whacking U.S. out of existence - at least until they discover the name of their country is on China's list too.
True, and the quality is superior now but is Japan at the top of the heap today? South Korea is a similar story.
What Stymied Japans Industrial growth is Innovation, or the lack of it to be precise. They do a great job of copying widgets and making them cheaply in a wide array of colors, but only a few companies really succeed at innovation. The US still kicks the worlds ass in the area of vision
Important to know that the US economy in the last 5 years GREW by the size of the economy of China.
The Chinese are falling behind, but you wouldn’t know it by what gets reported in the news.
“The US still kicks the worlds ass in the area of vision”
Yep - If the Chinese actually PAID for every copy of Windows, we could even out the trade deficit.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to depend on “intellectual property” and patent rights to support our country.
Funny story.
When Lord of the rings came out I had a friend who brought me a copy on DVD in the first week of the theatrical release.
He had gotten it from a missionary friend who had bought it on the street in china.
So here I was watching this pirated poor quality film that a missionary acted as a middleman on and had gotten all the way back to the US probably before the film hit the theatre.
Did Peter Jackson fail because of the piracy?
Noop! He sold Billions and went on to make 2 grand sequels
I bought them all, and the pirated copy?...Who knows where it is know..
Im not condoning piracy, Im advocating innovation
“I dont think its a good idea to depend on intellectual property and patent rights to support our country.”
Agreed. Saw a recent news item which claimed 9 out of 10 cd’s and dvd’s sold in China are pirated versions.
On August 31, 1939, I’m sure the world was “cool” with Germany catching up economically and military with the UK, France and the U.S.
Look how that turned out.
People said the same about Japan 40 years ago.
