PHOENIX - A man who coated a 3-week-old puppy in cooking oil and then fed it to his pet boa constrictor was sentenced Thursday to 90 days in jail and two years probation, prosecutors said.
Joseph Beadle, 40, pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge in March. He has served 51 days of his jail sentence while the case was pending.
Beadle, of Glendale, faced up to a year in jail on the charge.
Police reports said Beadle fed the mixed-breed puppy to the 8-foot-long snake last June as two 15-year-old boys watched. He poured the cooking oil on the dog so it would be easier for the snake to swallow.
Investigators seized his snake after finding it was the victim of neglect.
"The County Attorneys Office has made prosecuting animal-cruelty cases a high priority," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in a statement. "Experience and empirical evidence have shown that people who commit cruelty to animals are more likely to commit crimes against people."

Sorry, if he didn’t steal the puppy I don’t know why it matters...
The dog and cat have a ‘special relationship’ with man. I have owned dogs all my life and they have been well treated. Yet I have no feelings against dog, cock or bull fights. I would not send a man to jail if he arranged such fights. In short I guess I have mixed feelings with regard to jailing people for animal cruelty charges. This case does seem a little gross due to the ‘special relationship;’ more inappropriate than criminal are the terms I’m looking for.
So its now crimminal to feed your boa ?
I see no difference in feeding a rat, chicken, liberal to a boa and feeding a puppy to a boa.
But definitely not babies.
Does that clarify my position?
Dogs should be treated accordingly...
møøslimbs regard them as unclean animals, beneath contempt.
Why?
Would he have been arrested for feeding the snake to his dog?
I couldn't have said it better myself.
AFAIK, most snakes won’t eat something that’s already dead.
They need it live and kicking so they can work it down their throat and not have any broken bones or whatever.
OMG
He did that stupid trick knowing he’s end up in Joe Arpio’s jail? His time should have included a sentence for abject stupidity. That crazy-ass sheriff has the right idea of incarceration as a deterrent for repeating a crime in Maricopa County. He violates every jail standard enacted by the national council for that sort of stuff according to a young criminal lawyer in our building; to which I say: bravo.
In other news, local animal shelters killed thousands of cute cuddly puppies and kittens and not one of them was prosecuted.”
I don’t hear any of the “lets kill the guy” people complaining about the pound killing puppies.
I really wish you hadn’t posted that pic.
Glad I don’t live in this guys Phoenix neighborhood. I wouldn’t want to turn my back on him.
Not quiet, those people will eat anything with legs except a table.
For the other, I’m not sure why “cute” disqualifies a small critter from being part of the food chain...harmless, inoffensive or otherwise. For example, there is great sentiment out in California to protect the cougars who very much consider puppies and other pets as lunch, not to mention the occasional jogger. Yet you go to jail for shooting one. Puppies, by implication, are the preferred sacrifice.
People are a funny lot.
