New Mood From New Citizens
Latino immigrants in South Florida who have traditionally registered with the GOP have felt alienated by the party, critics say.
MIAMI BEACH As a Cuban who fled Fidel Castro's communist rule for a new life in the U.S., Julio Izquierdo would seem a natural Republican voter a sure bet to adopt the same political lineage that has long guided most of his countrymen who resettled in South Florida.
But moments after taking his oath this week to become a U.S. citizen and registering to vote, the grocery store employee said he felt no such allegiances.
"I don't know whether Bush is a Democrat or a Republican, but whatever he is, I'm voting the other way," Izquierdo, 20, said Thursday as he waited for a taxi after a mass naturalization ceremony at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Izquierdo said he did not like President Bush's handling of the Iraq war and was miffed at politicians, most of them Republican, who seem to dislike immigrants. That sentiment, expressed by several of the 6,000 new citizens who took their oaths Thursday in group ceremonies that take place regularly in immigrant-heavy cities nationwide, underscored the troubled environment facing the GOP in the buildup to next year's presidential election.
Surveys show that among Latino voters a bloc Bush had hoped to woo into the Republican camp negative views about the party are growing amid a bitter debate over immigration policy...

I have never understood the assumption by the president or Karl Rove that the hispanic vote would go Republican.
But there’s apparently a great deal that I don’t understand as time goes on..
It’s become a lot clearer as of late though, hasn’t it? :-(
“New Mood From New Citizens (Latinos Reject GOP...Surprise!)”
Everytime these people are given an opportunity to vote in their countries of origin, they elect socialists, quasi-socialist or down-right blood-thirsty commies.
Why would anyone (GOP) think it would be different here?
He’s probably one of Jayson Blair’s imaginary friends.
Most elections involve us choosing the least worst of 2 candidates. Unfortunately, not everyone is going to be a Reagan :(
Too much! :)
Oh hell yeah.
Oh BS! They just love people like you because they can manipulate you to whatever position the want by calling you names.
"And they have to work harder to make that racism no longer be more than just a stereotype--out of the two, a larger percentage of Republicans seem to be racist. "
Do you mean like the members of LaRaza, MEChA, LULAC, MALDEF or the HISPANIC CAUCUS? Or perhaps you mean the NACCS, NAHFE, NALEO or ULSHI? All this racial talk is absurd and surreal. Orwell couldn't write about it any better. Many whites have become spineless, Maxist appeasers.
I dont care how they vote. They’re illegal, I dont want them here.
“Izquierdo” means “left”. Perfect.
I don’t dislike legal immigrants. I dislike illegal immigrants.
No big deal, aside from the Cuban exiles who came in the 1960s, and the Germans who came in the 19th Century, most “ethnic” Americans have always rejected the GOP. Nothing new here...
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!

Despite the “whistling past the graveyard” attitude of our GOP ‘leaders’, here in New Mexico where the population has been 40% plus hispanic for generations, the dims have held the legislature for 75 years.
Never underestimate that us against them mentality and of course the media tells hispanics that the dims love them. And given the lack of interest in higher education in the hispanic communities, they may never see the truth the way blacks are at least starting to.
