Going Down with the Ship(Michael Reagan & the GOP)
Human Events Online ^ | 06/15/2007 | Michael Reagan

Posted on 06/16/2007 6:34:45 AM PDT by kellynla

The S.S. GOP is sinking fast, and it looks like Skipper Bush is going down with his ship. That’s only fair -- after all, he’s the one who torpedoed his own ship with the immigration-reform-bill warhead. Not fair is the fact that he’s taking his party down with him.

I can understand his stubbornness in sticking with this insane program that doesn’t do a damned thing to plug the leaking borders that are allowing the United States to be flooded with all manner and shapes of illegal aliens, some of them terrorists who want to kill large numbers of Americans -- he really has nothing to lose.

In less than 18 months he’ll be history -- one of those curiosities who at one moment wielded the vast powers of the presidency and the next found themselves with all the other John Q. Citizens.

That’s not true of the senators who stand on the bridge with him as the water rises up toward the quarter deck where they can either jump into the life boats and survive, or go down with the ship.

I’m amazed at how many of them appear to be choosing a watery grave. After all, it should be more than obvious that standing firm behind this monstrosity of a bill carries with it the death penalty -- it’s just plain suicidal.

He might not yet fully realize it, but Sen. John McCain has suddenly gone from being a serious candidate for the presidency to that of being a politician with no political future at all. And I can’t imagine how Senator Lindsay Graham could ever imagine that his strong advocacy of a bill that in the blink of an eye turns lawbreakers, some of the most serious kind, into instant legal immigrants could be helpful to his political future. Ditto John Kyl and the others.

If it weren’t so serious, it would leave us laughing at the spectacle we saw when the president went up to Capitol Hill Tuesday to try to revive the bill.

It wasn’t serious politics, it was a joke.

Did he really, seriously think that Harry Reid was going to be his friend and help patch the sinking GOP hull?

Here you have a president with a dismal 30-something-percent approval rating rubbing elbows with a group -- Congress -- that has a more-dismal 27 percent approval rating being led by a guy with a horrendous 19 percent approval rating. It doesn’t get more comedic than that.

These people are living in a dream world, and one that has not yet been shattered by the incredible backlash from Americans outraged to see their national sovereignty imperiled and determined to keep the bill from ever becoming law. The message is loud and clear: kill the damned thing or get ready to pack your bags and head for home because your political career is all but over.

To continue to push for passage indicates that the backers are either stupid, or arrogant and determined to impose their wills on the nation whether the people like it or not. When this bill emerged from the back room where it was crafted in secret by the likes of Teddy Kennedy, Rush Limbaugh took one look at it and renamed it the “Comprehensive Destroy the Republican Party Bill.”

No matter how many Democrat senators back the bill in a Senate they control, Republicans will take the blame for it. Unless the GOP roars back and in one voice makes it clear that their president does not speak for them on this issue, and goes all-out to kill it, 2008 is going to be a sorry time for all Republicans.

The late Sam Francis must be grinning up there in paradise as he watches the GOP prove once again that it is what he called it “the Stupid Party.”

After all, stupid is what stupid does. And when stupid defies the will of the American people, stupid goes under.

Conservatives should not take the distruction of this country lightly. This isn’t an issue that lends itself to simply agreeing to disagree.

What a horrible email, even if this person disagrees with the President on this issue. President Bush has done much for the conservative cause including nominating conservative judges, tax cuts, the economy, and the issue of abortion. I think it’s very sad that the conservative base cannot separate out the issues they disagree with from all the rest of the good this president has done for this country.
__________________________________________________________

I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you. If it were just this bill and if the President attempted to hold a dialogue with the American people on the subject, I’d be inclined to agree with you. However, this bill was crafted behind closed doors and then they attempted to shove it down our throats. (And still are determined to do so). What does the President do in the meantime, he and his administration including former speech writers insult and impune the very base who helped him win the 2000 election and stood behind him through thick and thin since. You have to ask yourself why this bill and why now. And when you do, all the ugliness and contempt these people in Washington feel for us is highly evident—including the President’s.

Our party has been thrown off the top of the Captial and when it crashes, and it will, the fractures will be to deep to repair.

Har, reminds me of the thousands of voter registration cards that Clinton sent out to Illegal Insurgent Criminal Invader Aliens just before the election in Nov 2000.

Only difference is that Clinton gave them instant-citizen-right-to-vote status

Oh and Rabid Bush Hater = Anyone that questions anything that President Bush does.

"A Hugo Chavez-style government next door would lead directly to Al Qaeda training camps and Chinese military installations within miles of our southern border, and would force us to undertake costly military actions to suppress Mexico at a time when we are already overextended around the world."

With passage of the amnesty Bill, we can have all that right here in what used to be our own country instead of next door in Mexico. Brilliant!

Thanks for a very interesting and thought provoking post...I too believe that explanations for the present political situation is far more complex than painting Bush-43 etc. as imbecilic tools of greedy Capitalists and treacherous -power at any price- Leftists. This nation has been asleep at the wheel far too long. The longstanding desire for cheap labor and for an expanding clientele of downtrodden illegals to ensure full employment for our social engineers has brought us to the present pass.

For all of the public's current outrage over unsecure borders and massive dislocations caused by the flood of illegals, what traction have Hunter and Tancredo gained? IMHO, excessive materialism and sky-high altruism have somehow combined to blind the people, and thus their representatives in government, as to just how far over the line we, and of course the illegals, have gone. The solutions are not going to be easy or pleasant. And no POTUS etc. is going to take effective action until the situation becomes sufficiently dire to pull a lot more eyes and ears away from American Idol etc..

In my view, we will secure our borders, deport illegals, and punish employers who hire them. The question of "when?" revolves around the amount of time it takes for the lure of inexpensive maid service and the feeling of security in our neighborhoods- far removed from the borders- to fade in the face of reality.

I'll be darned if I have a surefire solution that I think could be sold to the voters in a timely enough fashion to avoid that time-tested and most effective response to invasions- war.

I completely understand that. I may have HEAVY criticisms of Bush, but I certainly am not one of those who questions criticizes anything and everything that he does.

Shame on the person who wrote this and all who said they agree with it.

Shame on those who think it's from an authentic conservative and/or republican. My guess is that it's yet another liberal democrat PRETENDING to be a conservative republican.

Well, they are our overlords aren't they?

How dare the peasants demand of them any accountability for their actions

I know I’m taking a risk and that this is off topic, but I am very glad to see this particular screen name (#15) again on this forum. (cartoon is sadly accurate, too) Thx. Ok, bye, I’m back to lurking again.

Yes I agree. And constructive critizim is necessary with all politicians

It's easier for some to call names than to look at the facts and engage in rational discussion

You’re quite a pessimist. And what are doing to stop this impending horrible crash, in addition to trashing the president, that is?

Michael Reagan is exactly right: George Bush will be back in Crawford happily popping fart bubbles in his bath tub when the GOP makes that final swirl down the toilet and into oblivion.

You are welcome to your theory about whom the writer is. I must tell you, however, that all the loyal Republicans that I know are saying the same things. You can include me in that and I’ve been a Republican going back to Goldwater as well. In fact, I’ve actively worked in politics for 8 years on the local, state, and federal level. It’s reality time for all of us who have supported Republicans who have turned out to be RINO’s; even the President.

The damage this amnesty bill will do to this country (like allowing more terrorist cells to sneak in) negates the rest of his conservative pluses. There are illegal criminals in LA riding around looking for women to rape; our prisons our loaded with illegals that the taxpayers are subsidizing; our hospitals are being overrun with illegals; our schools are overrun with illegals; they are bringing diseases into this country; and the list goes on. Time to wake up as to what this invasion is costing each and every one of us. Another issue is the in-your-face arrogance of the US Congress. Politicians in DC are out of control.

Oh, I dont doubt that. I see it all the time. Sure, she peppered her email with things you and I can completely agree with. However, the author of the email used keywords like "corporatist" and "i used to be a republican", and "the worst President in my living memories". Dead giveaways. She's a liberal democrat pretending to be a Republican.

You can include me in that and I’ve been a Republican going back to Goldwater as well.

So what? We all were Republkicans going back to (insert name of Republican politican here). I've been a Republican going back to Nixon. (I was born in 1969 :-))

In fact, I’ve actively worked in politics for 8 years on the local, state, and federal level.

I've been a Freeper for 8 years. Several years before that, I was an "election inspector" (don't recall how many years). Didnt witness any attempts at voter fraud though. Just the normal stuff.

It’s reality time for all of us who have supported Republicans who have turned out to be RINO’s; even the President.

I've never supported a RINO and have gone against those who have turned into one.

We might as well give up the ghost and try to identify some decent democrats to vote for.

After all, the pubbies keep making promises about how they’re for limited government, border security, yada yada yada and then they just switch their mind whenever the hell they feel safe about doing it.

If we vote democratic we KNOW what we’re gonna get, maybe by knowing we can try to mitigate the damage.

There are several premises at work here, that don't get properly discussed:

1) Illegal immigration is providing a safety valve to keep Mexico from slipping into Communist revolution.

**************************

Your post deserves a big bump.

I have long thought that the serious slide toward communism in S. America is the President's #1 reason for this bill.

If so, there are some good reasons for its passage that the rank and file in the US will never understand.

Americans heading south-of-the-border seeking their own ocean front haciendas for a fraction of the price of existing condos in Cleveland

Actually, that's been taking place for years.

Mexican ocean real estate is pretty developed already and very expensive.
