President George W. Bush delivers remarks at the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C., Thursday, June 16, 2005. "In America, people of faith have no corner on compassion, but people of faith need compassion to be true to the call to "Ame al projimo como a sí mismo," love your neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself. That's a universal call," said the President. White House photo by Eric Draper

So we are either compassionate, or we are for the rule of law? That's a false choice, Mr. President.

love your neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself How about this? If I'm breaking the law I damned well expect my neighbors to be calling me on the carpet for it.

The rule of law
is compassionate, Mr. Bush. It's what our nation was founded on.
How about this one, Mr. President: Treat the American taxpayer's rights and money the way you'd like your rights and money to be treated.

I hope that FR is not becoming a site that puts our POTUS up for a derisive captioning effort.

Compassion and rule of law are not relational items. Compassion is a choice on the individual level, rule of law is part of the system.
Just like one cannot choose to make a law themselves (as an individual) that effects others, a system cannot ‘show compassion’.

He’s done some good. On this issue however, I can think of no one more deserving of derision.

That’s the reason we have laws — we can’t depend on how a person feels at any given moment, compassion or intolerate, etc., as to how citizens are treated or how we treat each other.

“Americans have owned this land for over 200 years, it’s high time we turn it over to the Mexicans and let them own it for the next 200 years. Americans can just go back to Europe or wherever they came from.”
To: oblomov
What's the deal? Does a group of Mexicans have a nuke hidden under the White House and is demanding amnesty or they will set it off?
Does Bush have a clue how pissed off most Americans are?
