CBS chief calls Rather comments `sexist'
By SETH SUTEL, AP Business Writer 5 minutes ago
CBS Corp. Chief Executive Leslie Moonves shot back at former CBS news anchor Dan Rather on Tuesday, saying remarks Rather made about his successor, Katie Couric, were "sexist."
Rather, speaking on MSNBC by phone on Monday, said CBS had made the mistake of taking the evening news broadcast and "dumbing it down, tarting it up," and playing up topics such as celebrities over war coverage. The comments appeared in blogs and in a story published Tuesday in the New York Daily News.
While referring to Couric as a "nice person," Rather said "the mistake was to try to bring the 'Today' show ethos to the 'Evening News,' and to dumb it down, tart it up in hopes of attracting a younger audience."
Moonves, asked about the remarks at an appearance in New York sponsored by the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, called the remarks "sexist" and said he was surprised at the amount of negative coverage Couric was receiving. Couric, the first solo female news anchor, has been struggling in the ratings.
"She's been on the air for nine months," Moonves said. "Let's give her a break."
Moonves said he "absolutely" had confidence in Couric and the direction that CBS's evening was going, saying it was imperative to reach younger audiences. Evening news broadcasts couldn't continue to have audiences that are mainly over 60, Moonves said, otherwise "the evening news will die."

Would a man or a tart say; “It’s a pretty little colon”?
Couric should just make crap up like I did—Dan Rather.

Hilarious to see these sharks eating their own.
According to Jay Severin, however, Katie’s outfits are so dowdy that CBS could never be accused of “tarting it up”.
I don’t have a TV, so I’ll have to take Jay’s word for it.
If you don’t want to be criticized, then stay the hell away from MSNBC, apparently. First Imus, now this.
Whatta bunch of assclowns.
I must admit, I had a gut-chuckle over that one...
Is any network more entrenched with radical feminism? It rears it’s head in all their shows, even and especially the dramas.
Tarting it up has a different meaning across the pond.
It’s an insult to tarts.
One of the few times in recent history when Gunga-Dan was actually right...he gets crap for it. :)
Dan who ?
Um, Les? Old sport, old bean, old top. How many shows has SeeBS cancelled after one or two episodes or even replaced in mid-season?
If Bob Schieffer had tanked this badly, he would have been replaced in a New York minute.
And if Katie has caused the ratings to tank to their worst ever and has not given birth to a larger audience after nine months, it is obviously a miscarriage.
And that would be bad news?....
When are networks going to learn? Who waits until 5:30 to find out what's going on in the world when you can find out by flipping to Fox News or better yet checking the net. And you're not bombarded with drug ads every 5 minutes on the net.
I haven’t watched CBS since they cancelled “Knots Landing.”
What I think happening here is Rather was sent to the other network to trash Miss Dingbat..Her ratings are all the way down the toilet so when Rather said what he did they probably had more people watch Dingy than ever has watched..
