Mosque’s completion cause for celebration

Abdel Majid left behind family and friends in Morocco four years ago to study and work in the United States. Yesterday, as he heard the traditional Muslim call to prayer at the new Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury, he truly felt at home.

“The population here - most of them are immigrants far from where they grew up,” said the 29-year-old Revere man. “To hear the call of prayer makes you feel this is really your country.”

Yesterday, Muslims from across the region watched the capping of the mosque’s minaret, the tower from which the call to prayer is made, at a daylong celebration hosted by the Islamic Center and the Muslim American Society.

For Muslims, the minaret represents the pinnacle of achievement, symbolizing years of planning and fund raising for New England’s largest educational, cultural and religious center devoted to Islam. The $22 million building will open in September in time for Ramadan.

Sufia Hassan, whose husband heads the Mosque for the Praising of Allah in Roxbury, said their mosque, like most around Boston, was not originally a house of worship. “This is the first built from the ground up,” Hassan said, nodding toward the massive brick building. “What’s nice is that it will bring Muslims from this country and other countries together.”
