Subterranean vault dating back to 8th Hejira century found beneath the Citadel
An immense subterranean vault was found beneath the Citadel in Cairo on 7/6/2007, said the Minister of Culture Farouq Hosni.
The vault dates back to the era of King Al-Nasser Mohamed Ben Qalawun in the 8th century of Hejira, said the Minister.
The vault extends along 200 meters between Al-Ablaq Palace and the sideline palaces of the Citadel.
I knewe they were going to hell when they had to start admitting women.
Al-Nasir Mohamed (Muhammad) A Mamluke Builder by Ismail Abaza
Sultan al-Nasir (Nasser) Mohamed (Muhammad) Ben Qalawoon (Qalaun) was a Bahari Mamluke who ruled Egypt no less than three times, first between 1293 and 1294 AD, the second between 1298 and 1309, and finally once again between 1309 and 1340. He was the only son of Qalawun (Qalaun) by a Mongol princess named Aslun Khatun, who is perhaps best known as a prolific builder in Cairo. Basically, he ruled Egypt for forty-two years, beginning at age eight, except for two intervals totaling about five years, when he was still too young to hang on to the empire.
Just to give people an historic context.
Most of the Middle East had been swarmed, first by the Mongol hordes, then various waves of the Crusades. Egypt was relatively untouched by the invasions directly, but many of those who were, fled to Egypt, and overran the city to some degree.
By all accounts the Sultan al-Nasir Mohamed Ben Qalaun was a pretty tough guy, not at all adverse to mounting heads on pikes and marching defeated and captured Mongol warriors through the streets with the heads of their compatriots strung on a rope and hung around their necks.

Sweet! maybe they’ll find my wifes car keys I’ve been looking for, for over a week now...
This guy was a mamaluke? I thought they were only on the Sopranos.
do they let women drive in egypt?
Hey I got an idea!
Maybe they can open it on live TV, and get some really well known and highly accredited investigative reporter to cover it. Someone like maybe Geraldo Rivera.
It would be quite humorous if it contained some authoritative repudiation of Muhammad.
Was it as empty as Al Capone’s?
Having been to Cairo it seems that EVERYONE is driving all at once and in every direction regardless of lanes.
Oh, in Cairo. I thought it meant The Citadel in South Carolina...
de nada.
Nothing more? What is it for?
Cistern? Every castle needs water during those pesky sieges.
No. It was filled with creamy, delicious nougat.
