Unbelievable. I'm glad I'm not a teenager nowadays. We used to make bottle bombs all the time and scare each other with them. Harmless fun. I'd be locked up if I did that now.

Yes, when I was a boy I got a chemistry set for Christmas, and among other things made explosives with it. “Pipe bomb” was a fun word back then. Now it tends to have a different meaning.

Actually my biggest exploit was a doorknob bomb, which we set off after lights out at school. People 10 or 20 miles away heard the noise and thought that a boiler had blown up. We very carefully set it off with dynamite fuse through one of the screw holes. We placed it down below a stone retaining wall where it would be sure not to do any damage to anything.

Just as what passed for technological expertise when we were kids is laughably inadequate today, so is what we called common sense.

We would have found ourselves in trouble for blowing up a bottle bomb at school just as this kid did. However, since school shootings and bombings were not thought of yet, the bomb in our day would not have brought such a response by the PD, FD, etc.

The boy should have had better sense, and should be fined heftily for the expenses of the said departments. However, a felony charge is overboard!

Maybe littering is the "crime", if there is one.

Make him write a 20-page essay on why he should not be "stupid" again.

You’ve got that right, a Gilberts chemistry set from the 50s even told you how to make napalm.

When "Zero Tolerance" Rules Go Too Far (parody courtesy of father_time89 of Parents Against Zero Tolerance (PAZT)

A memo to all students:

Please be aware that on Monday we are going to have an assembly on the evilness of bigotry and the importance of tolerance in modern society. This will be immediately followed by a two hour lecture on the school's new zero tolerance policies. For those of you who can't make the assembly we will outline the new rules here.

School Safety:
Following the Columbine High school massacre the administration has realized that all students have the potential to go on a psychotic killing spree and will be treated accordingly. This also means we will be watching out for warning signs of "antisocial behavior".

Weapons:
Any and all weapons are banned from school premises. This includes fake weapons, such as plastic swords, cap guns, and water guns. The administration is mostly composed of near sighted individuals who can't tell the difference between a small metal pistol and a large plastic water gun, so please act accordingly. We will also ban anything that looks like a weapon (from far away with bad light), including drawings of weapons. This also includes extending your thumb and index finger in the shape of a gun. Impromptu weapons are also banned, including bats, slingshots, rocks, scissors, and sharpened pencils. Since hands can also be used as weapons all students will be required to have them tied behind their back when not in use. In order to decrease school violence anyone caught violating these rules will be shot.

Threats:
We take all threats seriously, even when a man with no arms threatens to strangle someone. If you threaten someone you will be punished with the maximum sentence allowed. Threats can range from anything, from making a fist to saying "or else", or "I'm going to get you". We at the administration do not know the meaning of the word "joking" and will treat all threats as real. Remember it doesn't matter if the person FEELS threatened it matters if we THINK the person feels threatened (and remember what we said about students being potential killers). Students making threats will be assumed to have a weapon on them and will be punished accordingly (see above).

Fights:
Any student who starts getting hit by another student, is not allowed to fight back or defend themselves, but is instead required to get down on their knees and beg for mercy until the other student stops hitting them. Failure to do so qualifies as "fighting back" and thus the student will then be punished to the same extent as the person who started the fight. Remember it doesn't matter who started the fight or who is responsible for the fight but instead who was INVOLVED with the fight.

Sexual Harassment:
We at the administration are aware that sexual harassment comes in many forms and for your benefit.

The following constitute sexual harassment:
• Looking or pointing at a female student in an area below the waist or in the general torso area.
• Comparing two female students about anything
• Touching a female student (anywhere)
• Making a sexual joke or reference within a 90 yard radius to any female student
• Commenting about a female student's attractiveness
• Using derogatory terms to refer to a female student such as "girl" or "chick"

We realize that there are more forms of sexual harassment than what we have listed and the final decision on whether or not something constitutes sexual harassment will be up to the accuser's judgment. Also due to the large amounts of gay and bisexual students these rules also apply to members of the same sex. Any person accused of sexual harassment will be immediately suspended for 5 days with a mandatory recommendation for expulsion. Fair trial be damned we have to make this school a safe place.

Sexual Harassment on the internet:
We at the administration believe we have been given a divine power to control the lives of our students outside of the classroom. Therefore if we discover a student sexually harassing another student over the internet we will pretend it happened on campus and take appropriate action.

Gangs:
Wearing gang symbols is strictly forbidden in the school, any student caught wearing gang symbols will be suspended. What qualifies as gang symbols is as follows:

• A peace sign
• A cross or a star of David
• Black armbands
• Snakes, or any kind of animal

As new gangs are being formed this list is subject to change repeatedly and without notice.

Bullying:
As we all have been told bullies are the main reason that Columbine and Virginia tech massacres happened (ignoring their mental health). So any one seem insulting another student will be immediately expelled, also anyone who is bullied will also be immediately expelled as a potential threat to other students and will be required to undergo therapy.

Student Attitude:
We have been told that the Columbine shooters were depressed and sulked a lot, so therefore anyone who is not smiling and being optimistic will assume to be a potential threat and will be treated accordingly.

Remember this is for your own good. We as a school cannot trust our students to know the difference between right and wrong.

Pegues' mother, Pam, drove to the Douglas County Justice Center in Castle Rock. The daughter of a retired police officer, she figured once the officers knew the whole story, everything would be OK.

"And that was the biggest mistake I ever made," the 45-year-old said. "I'm thinking, 'Look, if we just tell them the truth, let them see this was a stupid prank and let them have the information, things will deflate.' "

Times have changed. People are no longer reasonable.

In all, authorities seized 26 items, including a computer, a bag containing three fireworks and household waste that Pam placed in the trash, and a 5- foot-long potato gun. A copper tube, smokeless gunpowder and a funnel also were removed from the teen's car, police said.

It was not until 11 p.m. that the couple and their two younger children were allowed back into their house.

Those potato guns...gotta watch out...

My Dad and I made black powder and some more explosive stuff using potassium permanganate, and lit them with homemade fuses.

When he was growing up, he and his friends made nitroglycerin, and some experiments with potassium chlorate cost his friend his hand.

Certainly time have changed.
