President Bush has cast a huge, dark cloud over the Republican party. But in that cloud's very size there may be a silver lining for the GOP. Most of those Americans who don't think President Bush made a mistake by going to war in Iraq are appalled by how clumsily the war has been conducted.
The president's strong backing for the "comprehensive" immigration reform bill now before the Senate, compounded by his attack on the character and motives of those who oppose it have split the GOP. Thousands of Republicans have changed their voter registration to "independent." The proportion of voters who identify themselves as Republicans has fallen to 30.8 percent from 37.3 percent during the 2004 election campaign, according to a recent Rasmussen poll.

We must fight this out in primaries and stay united in our zeal to elect Republicans.
Look at what's happening to Hagel right now. I'm sending his opponent money.
You should get your facts straight. I ran W's reelection GOTV effort in a swing county of about 600,000 people in 2004. I ran the same effort for the R's in 2006.
You live in a fantasy world. Anyone who cannot see that W has decided to break with conservatives is willfully blind. IMHO, the conservative base has hung with W like a battered wife, far past the point where the marriage is doomed. Hopefully that is ending and the Republican party can be resurrected in a form that lets it regain its majority. In its present chamber-of-commerce-controlled form, it will continue to lose ground.
Bush has done well with Federal judges, and I give him credit for that.
But he has really been off his stride lately. His support for amnesty for illegal aliens is the biggest blunder of his Presidency.
I'm a "usual Bush hater"?? You're delusional. I invite you to come and visit me.
I can take you on a tour of the canyon behind my house. You may have seen it on TV....the Minutemen had a little confontation with police and illegals there last year.
Then, we can get on the freeway and go to the beach. It may take us awhile if an illegal decides to "run" the border and the BP have to close down the roads to chase them but we'll get there.
Next, we can visit the school I work at. Hope your Spanish is fluent so that you are able to help me teach them. At lunchtime, you can help direct the children to the cafeteria to collect their free lunches (pay no attention to the mom that is actually eating that free lunch)!
After school, we can stop at the grocery store. Now, we may have to drive around the parking lot a bit to find a parking space because a good portion of the parking lot is occupied by the illegal day workers but never you mind, just ignore them.
Just let me know when you book your flight. Too bad you didn't make it down here for Cinco de Mayo. That is such a "special" weekend and you would be able to see a good portion of the San Diego police dept. all at once...even the mounted police!
I'll be waiting for you! Can't wait to meet you!
Oh, sure there are a few Republicans willing to fall for this and also a few elected Democrats who are smart enough to fear their voters who are opposing it, but by and large, this amnesty plan can be dumped at the feet of RATS.
Great analogy!
Go back to your work in the White House and stop wasting the taxpayers money playing around on the internet.
This divide leaves room for a conservative candidate to step forward and re-energize the conservative base, strengthening the GOP leading up to the 2008 election.
In strength training, you have to break down your muscles to get stronger. The same principles apply to the leadership of the Republican Party.
You won’t win any arguments by being irrational.
As I said, it’s not a dualistic universe, where you either have to love Bush or hate him.
When he does the wrong thing, he either has to be persuaded that he is making a mistake, or he has to be blocked, if possible.
This isn’t just some little mistake that we can overlook for the sake of the good things he will do in the future. This is the destruction of our country, an experiment that has lasted for 230 years but cannot possibly survive the results of this bill as the country we know.
If this bill is passed, there will be no going back again, no way to undo it if it proves to be a mistake, short of civil war. I trust that none of us wants that.
Does this mean you’re voting Democrat?
Why? Maybe I'm stupid but I do not see where Democrats are going to be better. I think they'll be far worse.
Somehow, I don't think Bush will escape the blame for any of what President Hillary and her Democrat Congress do to the country, at least not as far as his former party, the Whigs, I mean Republicans are concerned.
L
Jorge has been a disaster for us. I can not wait to see his sorry tail go.
In 2000 and 2004 it was GWB or AlBore or Kerry. It was an easy choice at those times. Of course some of GWB’s decisions were admirable, but some were not to be sure. Now is the time to look to the future, not the past, and concentrate on keeping the White House, in hopefully conservative hands, in the 2008 elections.
“screaming bile “
Mindless metaphor alert!
Try not to get any on ya.
“On Judges and taxcuts alone Bush has done far more good for the Conservative Movement’s future then all the screaming lunatics on the radio, or penning columns. Time for the mindless twit Bush haters to finally sit down and shut up. They have done nothing but scream bile at this President since day one.”
If I look, will I find you having drooled all over the “Daily Dose” threads? If so, go back to Insanity Island. If not, go now.
The tax cuts... are not permanent. Not a huge victory.
Judges - We had to beat his ass until he gave up on Miers. His initial judgement on who to pick was horrible. We had to hold his feet to the fire to get a decent one out of him.
“mindless twit Bush hatersmindless twit Bush haters?” I worked for both campaigns and feel sorely let down. Your inane comment leaves no room for the true nature of the masses who are disappointed with him now - ex-supporters who are furious about CFR, medicare giveaways, the unheralded growth of the size of transfer programs - more than Clinton, Dubai Ports, the border, the immigration bill, and the constant insulting by Bush of Republicans. Insulting, yes - if we opposed Miers we’re sexist, if we oppose Amnesty we’re racist.
“They have all spent all their time screaming bile at the GOP because they could not have only 100% of only what they wanted.”
The GOP pissed away it’s political capital. You’re the one screaming bile at those who have noticed - telling us to shut up. You even said it - “Time for the mindless twit Bush haters to finally sit down and shut up.” No, it’s time for the Bots to clean their ears and open their eyes and pay attention to how the GOP under Bush has self destructed. It’s frankly stupid of you to blame Bush’s self destruction on those who have opposed his liberal moves since day one.
“Frankly, GET OFF OUR SIDE. They are cause far more trouble then they “help” with their perpetual whining and always angry rantings.”
We expect Bush to be a conservative. That’s how he ran. I guess you want the Conservatives to leave you RINO’s alone to run the GOP? Screw that, it’s too important. You will be fought every step of the way. Amnesty will not happen. Real conservatives will continue to oppose Bush’s ongoijng LIBERAL plans like the Law of the Sea Treaty, the PC ROE in Iraq, billions for African dictators, open borders, growth of federal bureaucracy, unprecedented growth of social programs, and his creeping socialism.
Look at your post vs. mine. I pointed out a plethora of ways in which Bush disappointed those with conservative tendencies. You dismissed anyone who isn’t a bot as a “mindless twit” who is “screaming bile.” You threw out 2 non-examples - judges and tax cuts - and namecalled the rest of the way. Pretty sad.
