Today is the Cloture Vote on Immigration Bill [first cloture vote fails; 2nd cloture vote fails]
7 June 2007 | Gulf War One

Posted on 06/07/2007 6:17:41 AM PDT by Gulf War One

This is the homestretch.

Call and e-mail your senators today, Republicans and Democrats, urging them not to table debate on this critical piece of legislation.

It deserves a fair and open debate of all ramifications. To do otherwise is unamerican.

Ask them to vote "NO" on cloture.

Keep bumping this to the top.

Today is the day.

"... to declare English as the national language of the Government of the United States, and for other purposes."

Does not mean a thing it is just a shadow language. Does not make it the legal language like some assume.

I think they have been overwhelmed with expressions of support for Sen. Sessions. I called at 8:00 a.m. EST this morning and said the same thing. The lady was much more patient then but it was clear that she was getting many, many calls.

I guess this is a place most politicians want to be in - when they have to hang up because they are getting too many expessions of support...LOL.

God bless Sen. Sessions.

“Does this mean this bill is dead in the Senate? Can somebody please provide an update?”

No! It still has breath. There will be another vote between 4 and 8 tonight.

Immigration bill stumbles, but could recover later

An attempt to cut off debate on the immigration bill and move to final passage failed today, but Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the Senate will try again this afternoon.

If cloture is denied then, “the bill is done,” Reid told reporters. “What else can I do?”

The move to end debate failed, 33-63, with all Republicans voting against it.

Reid said it would be up to Republicans — specifically, the White House, which played a major role in crafting the bill — to keep it alive.

How are they going to overcome THAT vote later today?

I don't trust that McCain, Graham, Lott, and others who voted No on cloture will continue to do so. They probably have 50 but do they have 60? I hope not.

English as the national language

It BS. Just like the "health" exemption for abortion. "National" is not the same as the "official" language of the US. Its a way to make people think they did what we have wanted for so long. BS pure and simple.

I was asking that also. I think I heard earlier today that if Reid calls for a second vote ,, (and that also fails )it just means that the bill can’t be killed completely........but is gone for now......

English as a “national language” is precisely the wording used by Senator Clinton in last Sunday’s debate, as an alternative to “official language”, which would require that all official business be conducted exclusively in English. This amendment is a welcome, but largely meaningless, gesture.

Senator Reid admits he’s a failure as a leader, and is little more than a caretaker for the leadership position in the Senate.

“Hey, what can I do, I’m only in the 3rd-most powerful position in the government. Don’t blame me”.

Two ways. One, they could arm-twist a senator to reverse the vote on the Dornan amendment. Two, they could bribe enough people who just want something small. Remember, the entire republican caucus voted against cloture — because they want to keep amending the bill. If it was really the do-or-die vote, all the republicans who support the bill would move over to vote for cloture. That’s a good 15-20. Still short of 60 though.

I think if they had 60, they would have voted for cloture. Since they didn’t, the republicans decided to cover themselves by voting against cloture, so they could argue they wanted to allow more amendments to “fix” the bad parts.

Even if they voted it down, it can’t be killed. It can always come back. Right now they are just working on a super-amendment to LAST YEAR’S bill, which is the underlying bill being considered. They are amending the super-amendment, and trying to bring THAT amendment to a vote.

That makes sense.

It sickens me to be here in Ohio, I just know both Brown and Voinovich (R-Crybaby France) will vote for this POS bill if it has a chance of passing.
