Boy, that’s weak. Most enthusiastic immigration supporters I know are pissed off at how lousy contruction has been; and it’s the absence of real estate that drove housing prices up; and now housing is settling down anyway.

Not necessarily true kabar. To me the key votes are the Dorgan amendment that passed 49-48 last nite and the Coburn amendment that was defeated today 42-54. The reason a number of democrats voted as they did on these votes is heavy pressure from unions in the private sector which are opposed to the guest worker and in some cases portions of the amnesty provisions of the bill.

That's true up to a point. These amendments allow the individual democrats to vote the "right way" on a specific issue. Then they can tell their constituents, I voted for the overall bill because on balance it was a good bill, but I did try to change [fill in the blank] that was important to you and I will do my best to change it in subsequent congresses. The people who are pushing this bill thru know pretty much how people will vote on a particular amendment. They are willing to have supporters defect on certain amendments to give them cover with their constituents.

The reason a number of democrats voted as they did on these votes is heavy pressure from unions in the private sector which are opposed to the guest worker and in some cases portions of the amnesty provisions of the bill. Unless those provisions are removed the underlying bill will go down to defeat. In addition some Red State Senators from Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Indiana & Louisiana supported the latest Coburn amendment as well.

I really believe that Reid allowed the Dorgan amendment to come up again so he could get Dorgan, Sanders, and some others to support the overall bill. It is running a risk to let the guest worker program sunset after five years, but will that be enough to destroy the coalition. I don't think so.

I really believe that the Dems want this bill much more than the Reps and will do whatever they can to get it passed. Reid is playing the bad cop who is threatening to shut off debate and have a vote. He is putting pressure on the Reps who support the bill to curb the number of amendments and speed the process up. Reid makes it sound like that this is the last chance the Reps will get this kind of opprtunity. We will see how the 5 PM cloture vote turns out. I suspect that it may be postponed as a deal is worked out with McConnell and Lott to see if a compromise can be worked out on the number of amendments and time allowed. Reid won't call for a cloture vote unless he already knows how it will turn out.

I have not heard Kyl, Specter or McCain say that the passage of the Dorgan amendment is a deal breaker.

Well, maybe he’s just lame in hearings. It’s clear that Sessions is one who has really carried the ball on this immigration bill, maybe more than anyone else, so he’s definitely racked up big points with me.

Point-by-point refutations, and persistence, are both very important in this business. Sounds like he’s a workhorse.

I understand your point, and I understand the personality type (or the style). I’d still say that Sessions made a poor public impression in the Judiciary Committee hearings on the Roberts and Alito nominations, which some non-junkies would actually have watched. It was in contrast to a guy like Kyl, or Hatch, or Specter (to the extent that he was on our side), all of whom give the clear, unmistakable impression of being very much on top of things.

Sessions has definitely gone a long way toward changing my opinion of him with his strong and factual opposition to the immigration con.

The Mexican government is dumping all their unwanted trash on us

You see very few Mexican Professionals, business persons or people with money coming to the US illegally, they have it good in Mexico and are doing fine, and have a poor lower class to be at their beck and call for a few pesos.

—A reminder what absolute Whores of Satan reside inside the beltway.—

Comparing members of Congress with whores of Satan is an outrageous insult to the REAL hard-working prostitutes, laying Lucifer in heat, smoke, and flame , doing one of the jobs that patriotic Americans won’t do >;)

They still have to dispense the Dorgan amendment, either by modifying it or killing it outright. They will debate supposedly 3 amendments from each side before the 5:00 pm? vote if they can or already have obtained unanimous consent to do so. As far as I know so far Sen. Sessions has objected to the UC request.

I should point out that the AFL-CIO is strongly opposed to the ‘guest worker’ portion of the bill. See http://www.aflcio.org/issues/civilrights/immigration/upload/ImmigQ&A200610.pdf. They also wish to transfer the burden of enforcement to employers rather than equally to law enforcement authorities in general, local or federal. The AFL-CIO opposes both the House enforcement only bill passed last year as well as the current bill, in its present form, in the Senate.

1-800-417-7666 ...

Shamnesty line and still useful. Even though I have a VOIP flat rate service. I call the Senators on the Shamnesty line.

Let George Soros and friends foot the cost for my call. :)

We’ll know what’s what this afternoon on the cloture vote.

Guys there are a handful of Senators that are key on this. Fry the lines now!

Use the Soros Shamnesty line: 1-800-417-7666.

And spread it around and get your colleagues to call.
