A phantom stood behind an invisible podium in the New Hampshire Republican debates last night. But unlike the first two debates, no one tried to pretend former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson wasnt a key player in the upcoming presidential race. It was another Thompson who introduced Fred to the audience -- by saying he was Thompson -- Tommy -- not the other one.
Just then, the absence of Fred Thompson seeped into the evening atmosphere. Some say the stalling to officially announce a candidacy is damning -- while others insist it is downright smart. Nevertheless, the silence was a golden emphasis of Thompsons prominence in the race last night.
Hes been embraced in word by many conservatives who feel alienated by the current selection of blue-tinted Republican candidates, but is he all that they dare to hope for? Thompson has been dubbed a savior for the Republican nomination, but the hype could be watered in the disillusionment of unrealistic optimism.

Hunter as VP, Tancredo as Homeland Security. FYI, ICE is under Homeland Security, in the current schema.
Everything I’ve heard suggests the first week of July, just not the 4th.
I'm sure this is what you meant to say. Right?
"I want to be a POTUS"
Just read it - good summation. You made one point in particular which I believe is crucial, and which is being almost completely ignored as we all become absorbed in "election fever":
RE:After this shakeout, there will be some movement of the top tier, and momentum will shift in unpredictable directions, and external national or world events might intervene.
This is the wildcard everyone seems to be ignoring. There are powerful forces around the world who don't really much care who wins our political rat race - they will be pursuing their own plans. What these people do in the next year in places like Lebanon/Israel, the cities of Europe or the Persian Gulf, etc. will profoundly influence our evaluation process. It is my belief that events are going to start driving the political process far more than the political process drives events.
I tend to agree.
I think one question every Republican candidate ought to have to answer is, "Say for some reason you aren't the candidate. Tell us why (pick one of the other Republican candidates) is better than ANY of the Democrats." This ought to be the approach of everyone on this board. Sadly, it isn't.
I share your general distrust of politicians, especially these days. However, Thompson’s record on national security, federalism/devolving power to the states, and reining in spending is very much in line with his record as a Senator. If what they say is in line with what they’ve done, I’m inclined to believe them.
“Tell that to all us blue-haired women as we storm the voting booths to vote for him”
Ditto ! A “pretty face” hasn’t done it for me in years.
The comments some make about his looks are ridiculous. What does he stand for, is what is important.
Fred looks like a double of my late father in law, a man I respected and loved. Every time I see Fred, I am reminded of someone who was very special to me, and I have my husband because of my father in law. I just hate it that people criticize Fred’s looks in particular. It isn’t appropriate right now.
I have several candidates that I like, as in Duncan Hunter and Huckabee, but Fred is really high on my list, because of what he stands for. His looks don’t hurt either, but they don’t count for a lot.
You twist it like a Liberal Ha Ha
Ol’ Screwtape keeping an eye on Wormwood’s latest patient.
Yikes. ;^)
No, that was at one of the Dem debates. Totally fitting Lucifer would make and appearance. Just sayin’! ;^)
AMEN. Most of the men who stood onstage last night at the debate have been at work in the trenches for years and years.
It pisses me off that Fred thinks -- perhaps because he is a member of the Hollywood elite -- that he can skip the dirty work and go right to the head of the queue.
Didn't think so.
I'm a big Thompson supporter but this is one thing that concerns me too.
Have you gotten that ‘I’m a Romney supporter’ line into your tagline yet?
Didn’t think so.
Troll.
Then he showed rare energy in the Senate in helping his best pal McCain shove CFR down the throats of Americans and stripping them of their First Amendment rights to speak out politically--especially about incumbents.
That putrid and diabolical piece of unconstitutional trash is still on the books, and Americans are still gagged. But that's okay with Fredzo. He's decided he feels bad about it.
Your sympathy is duly noted, Fredzo. But your sympathy doesn't get our free speech back.
What should we call this nasty species of flip-flopping?
Let's call it fred-flopping.
You have become incoherent with desperation. Fred’s doing better than the flip-flopping meteorologist while hardly even trying, and it steams you.
I am laughing at you and your angst.
