Bigotry never goes away. When it becomes unfashionable, it goes underground and waits until a new hate group appears into which it can project its twisted sickness.
Racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism and anti-immigrant nativism are chronic infections in the American body politic. Rush Limbaugh singing his obscene tune "Barack the Magic Negro" is inviting prejudice and violence.
However, for pure irrational rage, the current crop of nativists are some of the worst to come along since the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s or those God-fearing Protestants who burned convents in Boston in the 19th century.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
you are not a bigot for opposing ILLEGAL immigration
And if cluelessness isn't, it ought to be.
What a pantload of pure crap. Andrew Greeley's comparison of the two proves his total, pitiful detachment from reality.
From the other thread, where a further records check revealed he had previously been arrested on rape, burglary, robbery, disorderly conduct, battery, parole violations and failure to register as a sex offender, according to the release. Yuma Border Patrol has rough Monday.
Bigotry: Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion: intolerance, prejudice.
Then, isn't it bigotry to call people "nativists..." ?
P R O P A G A N D A
This is pure trash.
It’s the sheer numbers we worry about...plus the continual flouting of US laws. They’re here illegally and it’s part of the pie in the sky dream of a North American Union. Never mind that a good percentage of those rushing over the border harbor dreams of ‘reconquista’. (Worrying about American culture/values/English/laws is hardly bigotry and calling it that is a race baiting cheap shot and not worthy of the author.
Why is colluding with Mexico in the evil of ethnic cleansing praiseworthy? Will Andrew Greeley grieve for families of US citizens killed by illegals driving the wrong way on the highway or simply murdered by illegal criminals? Why doesn’t he move to Mexico and try to make it a better place to live? (Clean up endemic corruption, etc.. (Where’s my prozac.)
Am I saying that hatred for immigrants is a Nazi attitude? You bet I am! And in the objective order mortally sinful, too.
As I look through the mail, I wonder what these people fear. What terrible threat to their well-being do these poor peons represent? Hordes of infidel invaders perhaps -- just as my ancestors frightened the good citizens of Boston?
A billion or more people live in poverty. I think this author should let them all stay at his house to prove his compassion.
This op-ed is not only factually incorrect it is hateful.
Don’t you realize that when you assume that everyone who is perceptive enough to see that this amnesty bill is unfair and dangerous, is a racist, you show your own hypocritical bias?
I see this same hypocrisy in so many places: “Americans are stupid!” “Americans are arrogant!”
Don’t give in to the dark side of the Force, Luke!
Yes, bigotry IS always sinful. Opposition to criminal acts, however is NOT bigotry and NOT sinful. Those who oppose the immigration of hispanics because of their race or national origin are, in my opinion, bigoted and wrong. But that is NOT what most conservatives are troubled by. We oppose the illegal crossing of our borders, for whatever reason. It is a felony, and ignoring it is wrong.
I feel like I need to bath after reading that tripe.
I believe that immigration should be first and foremost for foreigners married to US citizens (as many have been married to soldiers) and for English-speaking foreigners who want to move here primarily out of preference for our culture and form of government. ...not hordes of foreign-language, overly subservient singles to suit dishonest employers. Too many immigrants who retain foreign cultures, languages and allegiances are more expensive for all of us to attempt to assimilate into American society.
Our immigration system was more based on family considerations and preferences for American culture in the past. Now it’s based more on third-world, overly subservient labor, abuse and vanities.
Father Andrew Greeley, S.J.
For you non-Catholics, that means he’s a Jesuit. For many of us Catholics, that means he’s a royal pain in the @ss.
Not unlike Father Robert Drinan, S.J. Google them both. Far-out, whacked-out liberal scolds.
Always wagging the scolding finger. Been doing this since the sixties, when he started out wearing turtlenecks, picking a banjo or geeetar, trying to, you know, REACH the urban young people.
Same old, tired old, liberal c-r-a-p. If someone disagrees with Fr. Greeley, he calls him/her a Nazi.
Nazi-shmazi nyah nyah nyah.
Take a powder, you worn out radical leftover!
I challenge you on your apparent definition of "conservative."
I stopped at the headline too, except I agree with it completely.
What nominal conservatives have said about Mexican immigrants -- and to them, they are all "illegals," for none has come forth to defend them in any way shape or form; clearly to these nominal conservatives anyone who isn't just like them is sub-human -- what they have said and implied is completely bigotted and inexcusable.
In NYC, one does not find churches crowded on Sunday with any race, let alone nice, clean republican white folks. And yet, there is a Parish in the Bronx, I am told by the Msgr., that has 9 Masses attended by 5000 Mexican immigrants on a given Sunday. I'd rather have them as neighbors and fellow citizens than someone who calls himself a conservative and gives the real ones such a bad name by his ignorance and refusal to govern his mouth or pen.
So, there, I've supported the two biggest thorns in the nominal conservative's side: Mexican immigrants and Catholics.
How did wanting our borders protected and wanting laws enforced get turned into being a nativist bigot?
Spell check says “nativist” isn’t a real word anyway.
