At Riverwalk Records, the all-vinyl record store just down the street from the state Capitol, the black "US Out of Vt.!" T-shirts are among the hottest sellers.
But to some people in Vermont, the idea is bigger than a $20 novelty. They want Vermont to secede from the United States -- peacefully, of course.
Disillusioned by what they call an empire about to fall, a small cadre of writers and academics is plotting political strategy and planting the seeds of separatism.
They've published a "Green Mountain Manifesto" subtitled "Why and How Tiny Vermont Might Help Save America From Itself by Seceding from the Union." They hope to put the question before citizens at Town Meeting Day next March, eventually persuading the state Legislature to declare independence, returning Vermont to the status it held from 1777 to 1791.

Mark Steyn once mentioned Vermont is an honorary member of the European Union demography wise. It will not be long for the country to be empty of people. The alternative would be the whole population consists of retirees (rich ones at 50, 60, 70) who worked in free market manners personally but hold socialist beliefs and decide to retire there and then vote in high taxations. Having got trust or off-shore accounts stacked they won’t pay any tax, it forces the tax on the rapidly shrinking working age people.
Either way they will go bankrupt in 20 years and will claw to Brussels, Ottawa, London, or horrors, Washington, for bailout.
We tried that once. They called it the "Constitution of the United States of America".
Bye bye Bernie Sanders....!
You’re right. If the federal government were held to strict Constitutional standards, each state would be exactly as he describes.
I fully support their right to secession, as a semi-southerner and states rights supporter! I welcome Good ‘Ole Bernie (and Howard “The Duck” Dean’s) Exit from the US!
I think you guys should strip them of US citizenships at independence. And then require visas to enter the United States. Erect stringent border controls on both borders and subject every one of them 3-hour interrogations and searches each time they enter the United States.
The way I see it:
NATION 1: Vermont, Ontario, the Maritime Provinces and Nunavut, and any other New England states that would like to join.
NATION 2: Quebec
NATION 3: Mexico, Puerto Rico, New Mexico
NATION 4: California, Western Washington, Western Oregon, Southwestern British Columbia, Hawaii.
NATION 5: The rest of the United States, plus Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon and whatever they call the rest of the Northwestern Territories, after they carved Nunavut out of them.
Thanks. Not to “monday morning quarterback” too much, but I think the concept of “united statehood” ended around WWI - we were doing so damned well that we had to go to war.
Which, the Fed with its new legs, became the mechanism for the “Progressive Era”, urged on by lobbying and a bored judiciary.
Then came the “New Deal” and WW2. IMHO, we have, as conservatives, a target to shoot for. It was Republicans who ended slavery, as it is, well, blatantly Unconstitutional.
I doubt if this small cadre of academics and writers is thinking of setting up a free trade zone. And as someone once said, I'd rather be governed by fifty names chosen at random from the phone book than the faculty of Harvard!
Nice work. Not sure about #3 - PR might feel a little differently, but I’d add Louisiana to #2.
Exactly: AND NO ILLIGAL IMMIGRATION (From the Nation of Vermont ;) )!
That may very well be the way, it is..(in the future, Unfortunately)..
The country won't miss any of these guys.
I still remember they cried “join Canada!” after 2004, but apparently they figured out Stephen Harper makes that country more conservative and thus no more to their liking, so they want to try secession and independence.
It’s funny how these liberal socialists flee the hell holes they created through their Bolshevik policies. And then what do they do? They immediately try to force the same PC krap down our throats and want to make their new home an image of the previous. Doesn’t make any sense to me.
But don’t question their patriotism...
I guess they’re willing to give up their precious Social Security payments and their Medicare.....
good post.
