Bush scolds balking GOP

By Stephen Dinan and Ralph Z. Hallow THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 2, 2007

President Bush yesterday renewed his attack on Republicans who oppose his immigration bill, again charging that they are trying to "frighten people" and calling on supporters to rally around the compromise.

The president pleaded with senators to "show courage and resolve" to withstand outrage from voters in their districts.

"It is right to argue for what you believe and recognize that compromise might be necessary to move the bill along. And it is right to take political risk for members of the United States Congress," Mr. Bush said in his second impassioned plea this week on the issue and the second time that he has accused Republicans of trying to scare voters by labeling provisions in the bill an "amnesty."

But many Republican senators say the bill is both an amnesty and unworkable and argue that Mr. Bush's barbs are off the mark.

"I'm not going around frightening people. People are frightened, and they're trying to scare the politicians into voting the way they want them to," said Sen. Jim DeMint, South Carolina Republican, whose opposition to the bill has earned him standing ovations at speeches and events back home during the past week.

Mr. Bush's challenge followed a speech in Georgia on Tuesday that infuriated Republican opponents of his bill. And the renewed challenge came just a day after White House press secretary Tony Snow said the administration was trying to "lower the temperature and get people to talk about basic principles."

The fight is taking a serious toll on Republicans. The Washington Times reported yesterday that small donations to the Republican National Committee have dropped by an estimated 40 percent

"Immigration is always a failure. Yet this time tony snow expects a different result. "

Isn't that the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?

The Political Class has more in common with each other than they do with us, even when they pretend to be in opposition.

They are sort of like pro-wrestlers. On stage (in the ring) they are deadly enemies, fighting to the death, or time limit. Back behind the curtain, they are buddies, heading out for drinks together.

We know that is true with the Senators, for example. They fight on the Senate floor and buddy up for drinks at the end of the day.

They all have their public persona for the camera and their real face off camera.

It will be a single issue election unless Bush does something to distract us from immigration...Iran comes to mind...

After being a card-carrying Republican all of my adult life, I have left the Party and am now unaffiliated. I cannot stand any more of this traitorous BS from our so-called “leaders”. They are leading us into a worthless third world society and there are so many lemmings ready to jump off the cliff with them. Not me! Not once more! I am done and will NOT follow these idiots!

From HonestConservative on another thread. I thought this was good.....

It's a matter of the fact that he, The President of the United States, has a sworn constitutional duty to protect the sovereignty of this nation.

He is not the sovereign of this nation, nor is Orca, or his father or Clinton or Reagan. The sovereignty of this nation comes from God to the people.

He took an oath to uphold the constitution and thus this nation and he has ignored his duty in regard to the border. Not only has he ignored it, but he has all but invited foreigners to invade.

This is the end of our free republic. You know it, I know it, and George Bush knows it.

I am tempted to follow your course, but if I do, it will lock me out of the primaries, which is the only chance we have to change the “system”. Incidentally, I just sent the Heritage Foundation the donation I would have given to the RNC.

Probably had something to do with the night of the 2006 elections about him [Tony Snow] saying "Now the president has a congress he can work with on illegal aliens, er, "undocumented" "immigrants".

I don't think I'm the only one who thinks our pro-sovereignty GOP losses were engineered for exactly that purpose by Bush and that other Magnificent Mofo, Karl Rove.

Americas next Civil War...coming sooner than one would think.

I'm deeply afraid that you're right on that. I used to wonder how it would work because it wouldn't be state against state or region against region this time. I thought it would be some people on your block against other people on your block. Left against right.

OTOH Bush may have succeeded in uniting the vast majority of American citizens on this ONE issue. Fewer than one in five Americans want this filthy bill.

IMO, if there is a new Civil War it will be American citizens against the Political Class.

Ditto Joe, to everything you said.

I've stood by Bush through everything, from the war, Abu Grabe, Dixie Chicks...I've stopped going to movies starring anyone who bashed him...everything....but

I got to thinking about it, even Jimmy Carter only gave away the Panama Canal...Bush is GIVING AWAY AMERICA.

It's time for this s*** to STOP!

I have supported Bush right down the line on Iraq, but after listening to this garbage, I wonder what else he’s been lying about?

Probably plenty IMO, but I'm quite sure he was blind-sided on 9/11. The reason I trust him on THAT one: 9/11 put his major goal--the implementation of NAU--on hold.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned.

Hoover presided over The Great Depression.

Carter presided over The Great Inflation.

Bush2 is presiding over The Great Invasion.

I understand what you're saying and I've heard it from a lot from good friends. I wish you all would just hold off until after the next Republican PRIMARY. It could make the difference of having Duncan Hunter or Fred Thompson to vote for instead of Guiliani or some other ultra lib.
