Bush scolds balking GOP
By Stephen Dinan and Ralph Z. Hallow THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 2, 2007
President Bush yesterday renewed his attack on Republicans who oppose his immigration bill, again charging that they are trying to "frighten people" and calling on supporters to rally around the compromise.
The president pleaded with senators to "show courage and resolve" to withstand outrage from voters in their districts.
"It is right to argue for what you believe and recognize that compromise might be necessary to move the bill along. And it is right to take political risk for members of the United States Congress," Mr. Bush said in his second impassioned plea this week on the issue and the second time that he has accused Republicans of trying to scare voters by labeling provisions in the bill an "amnesty."
But many Republican senators say the bill is both an amnesty and unworkable and argue that Mr. Bush's barbs are off the mark.
"I'm not going around frightening people. People are frightened, and they're trying to scare the politicians into voting the way they want them to," said Sen. Jim DeMint, South Carolina Republican, whose opposition to the bill has earned him standing ovations at speeches and events back home during the past week.
Mr. Bush's challenge followed a speech in Georgia on Tuesday that infuriated Republican opponents of his bill. And the renewed challenge came just a day after White House press secretary Tony Snow said the administration was trying to "lower the temperature and get people to talk about basic principles."
The fight is taking a serious toll on Republicans. The Washington Times reported yesterday that small donations to the Republican National Committee have dropped by an estimated 40 percent

WHY are they are trying to ram it down our throats in the dead of night??? Anyone??
Are the Pro Amnesty liars afraid that with a slowing economy, we are about to have a lot more Illegals in country with no jobs, no $$’s and becoming a highly visisble INSURGENCY??
Sigh. I assumed rationality. Always a bad assumption when dealing with your man.
Bush is just as stupid as charged and he wants to take the Republican party down with himself.
I actually saw Snow on OâReilly on Thursday say that Bush was a CONSERVATIVE President - spit my beer out. I predicted 6 weeks ago that Snow would leave the job by July. Hummmm he may have drunk too much Kool-aid.
Yeah, never mind the will of the people.
Most of us learn from our mistakes.
“How about Jim DeMint for President 2008?”
I don’t know about DeMint, but the candidate who makes border enforcement/illegal immigrant deportation the main plank in their platform will win in 2008. Democrats and Republicans will vote overwhelmingly for this candidate, if this person ever emerges.
This is shaping up to be a single-issue election.
Look how the media is now spining GWBush as “smart” but the republican public as “stupid”
The MSM is a 100% failure on this coverage.
Folks, let’s face it, Bush is nothing more than a tar baby at this point. You know that he won’t change position on this issue and that he has nothing to lose by staying entrenched. Focus your energy on Congress to kill this bill in its tracks and stop beating against the walls of the White House. Deny the RNC/GOP your resources of time and money also. Dry up the RINO watering hole. Do what you can to show your disdain to business and special interest groups who are working to support this bill. Call your local chamber of commerce and let them know how you feel.
“Small GOP donations are dowm 40%”.
I wonder about the 60%. Maybe they’re so far under their rocks they have’nt gottten the word. Or maybe the Bots are lying about the numbers.
The people that came here legally to become citizens are really mad. It’s a nightmare of time and money for lawyers to run paperwork around to become a naturalized citizen. They really want to be here. Ask those folks you know about the illegal alien amnesty and a free ride in. Just ask.
I would extend that thought to the psychological realm to say everything he has done has been in search of approval from Daddy Bush. Specifically, it appears from his actions that the current president believes that Perot's NAFTA warnings spirited away those voters that could see what the Bush family was about early in the game, thus costing Daddy Bush a second term. This amnesty bill is the big payback to Republican Perot voters of 1992.
And let's don't even get started down Michael Moore territory on the revenge for Daddy Bush to put Saddam's neck in a noose...
Sorry if I seem a little bent about this but I certainly feel that I've had the wool pulled over my eyes.
Thank you. There are way too many comparisons one can make. I think I'll go throw-up my coffee. Blackbird.
