:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
British Intelligence: Al-Qaida Expanding
-Full Story-

British intelligence officials said they believe that al-Qaida has a secure base in Pakistan's Waziristan region and is planning terrorist operations.

The group is reaching out to Muslims in North Africa, The Telegraph reported. Last year, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, an Algerian terrorist group, merged itself into al-Qaida, a move announced by Osama bin Laden's chief lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in a tape promising action against the "apostates" in the Algerian government and "the treacherous sons of France."

Al-Qaida is also believed to be planning expansion into Lebanon and Syria, the newspaper report said.

Okay, gang, here’s a question for you. My wife and I were out camera shopping tonight in the lovely sanctuary city of Virginia Beach, starting at Best Buy and moving over to Circuit City. At the first location, we saw a pair of large rental passenger vans with groups of Mexican men, some sitting in the vans, others in the store. When we left, we saw that one of the vans was gone. On to Circuit City, and there’s the other van, with the same pattern going on. Some of them were sitting in the van, some in the store, mostly looking at cameras.

Am I being paranoid in seeing groups like this? What struck us was the fact that it was a pair of rental vans. My wife has a good “spidey sense” about her, and when it starts tingling, I listen.

Radio disruptions at B-G airport caused by W. Bank pirate radio station [creative terror]

Radio disruptions at B-G airport caused by W. Bank pirate station

By Zohar Blumenkrantz, Haaretz Correspondent Last update - 18:07 07/06/2007

An illegal radio station operating out of the West Bank city of Ramallah caused interference in communications between Ben Gurion International Airport’s control tower and the airplanes.

Communications Minister, Ariel Attias said the station had been found and closed down on Thursday. Despite this, some further interference was experienced by the control tower.

Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz said Thursday that he would call for an urgent cabinet meeting in order to discuss the pirate radio transmissions which have been causing disturbances in air traffic control communications at Ben Gurion airport, situated in Tel Aviv.

Disruptions continued on Thursday morning as the control tower was forced to wait 10 minutes between each take-off, as a safety precaution. These precautions are expected to cause delays in the departure of flights.

Mofaz said he would demand at the meeting harsher penalties for those transmitting from pirate radio stations that have been disrupting communications between the control towers and pilots.

“Explosion kills one, wounds three in Christian area north of Beirut”

SNIPPET: “”The Syrian regime has promised to turn Lebanon into hell.” From The Associated Press, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:

BEIRUT, Lebanon: A bomb went off near a Christian town north of Beirut on Thursday killing at least one man and wounding three others, in the latest string of explosions that have shaken Lebanon since fighting erupted between army troops and Islamic militants in a northern refugee camp three weeks ago.
Security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to the media, said the blast occurred in an industrial area in the town of Zouk Mousbeh, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Beirut and near the town of Jounieh in the Christian heartland.

The explosion set off large fires in several buildings and black smoke was seen billowing from the area. Ambulances and fire engines raced to the scene, where mangled remains of cars destroyed in the blast lay overturned on the street.

Civil defense personnel pulled out the body of Pierre Dehni, whose nationality was not immediately known, from the wreckage of a gutted building. Two Syrian workers and a Lebanese man were also wounded in the blast, the officials said.

Al-Jazeera satellite television said a car bomb had caused the explosion but Lebanese officials could not immediately confirmed this. Firefighters said they expected to take hours to extinguish the blazes....

The blast late Thursday was the second in four days. On Monday, 10 people were injured when a bomb exploded in an empty passenger bus parked in the Christian neighborhood of Bouchrieh east of Beirut.”

Lebanon foils new terror plot (preempts car bombing with cache of munitions)
UPI ^ | June 7, 2007

Posted on 06/07/2007 12:40:45 PM PDT by NYer

BEIRUT, Lebanon, June 7 (UPI) — Lebanon scored a victory in its escalating battle with terrorists as authorities preempted a car bombing and found guns and ammunition.

As the army continues its heavy campaign against the Islamic militant Fatah al-Islam group in northern Lebanon, now well into its third week, the security authorities said Thursday they seized a booby-trapped car and two others laden with weapons and ammunition.

The official Lebanese news agency said authorities found the vehicles in Berr Elias town in the eastern Bekaa Valley after interrogating three suspects who were arrested Wednesday.

The three suspects — two Syrians and an Iraqi — reportedly confessed to the authorities about the booby-trapped car and plans to blow it up. The agency said the security and army forces cordoned off a building in the town and found the three vehicles without license plates.

Unconfirmed reports said the three suspects were affiliated with al-Qaida.

Counterfeit Money Has Surfaced Again

June 7, 2007

Reporter: Heather Haley

“Funny Money” has been found again in Leslie County and state police say the fake bills have been surfacing across the region.

Just last week we reported several counterfeit bills had been discovered in Leslie County.

State police say fake money is growing in numbers, but there are ways you can keep yourself from being scammed.

Angie Salyers is a cashier at Hyden Grocery in Leslie County and she says every once in a while she sees a bill that just doesn’t look right.

“I know there is a face you can look for if you hold it up to the light and there’s a watermark sign that goes down the side of it,” Salyers said.

But Salyers isn’t the only one having to keep an eye out for counterfeit money, state police say its becoming more common across all of eastern Kentucky.

On Wednesday, Kentucky State Police got a call that someone tried to pass a fake 20 at Hyden Grocery, as well as a fake 10 at the Shell gas station next door.

State Police Detective Joe Griffith says the funny money isn’t too funny if you’re caught.

“They could be charged with forgery, they could be charged with possession which is a Class D Felony and also they could be charged with theft,” Detective Griffith said.

Detective Griffith says people with counterfeit money tend to go businesses when they are the busiest, in hopes of not getting caught.

State police say if you believe you have come across counterfeit money to contact your local police department immediately with any information you can provide so they can try to stop the “funny money” in eastern Kentucky.

Police say they did arrest two people in Leslie County a couple of weeks ago for trying to use counterfeit money, but they’re not sure if that incident is connected to the most recent cases.

“Debit card fraud cases reported in Ozarks
Consumers affected in Fair Grove, Strafford and Springfield.”

Didi Tang
News-Leader

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In Fair Grove, 14 reports were filed in the last two weeks.

In Strafford, the city had six cases last week.

Ozark, Springfield and Greene County also have received several fraud reports.

“Possibly it is just a coincidence. Possibly someone is there skimming ...,” said Capt. Jim Barber of the criminal investigation division at the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

“It could be Internet-based. It could be identity theft,” Barber said.

In Fair Grove, police chief Shawn Eakins said the target of the frauds so far has been bank-issued debit cards, and that fraudulent charges have appeared in states such as Illinois, New York, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Georgia, and Texas, and even as far as Italy and Cancun, Mexico.”
