:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
British Intelligence: Al-Qaida Expanding
-Full Story-

British intelligence officials said they believe that al-Qaida has a secure base in Pakistan's Waziristan region and is planning terrorist operations.

The group is reaching out to Muslims in North Africa, The Telegraph reported. Last year, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, an Algerian terrorist group, merged itself into al-Qaida, a move announced by Osama bin Laden's chief lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in a tape promising action against the "apostates" in the Algerian government and "the treacherous sons of France."

Al-Qaida is also believed to be planning expansion into Lebanon and Syria, the newspaper report said.

Release A070627a

High-level senior al-Qaeda leader killed during Coalition operations

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces positively identified two terrorists killed in an operation June 23 south of Hawija.

Mehmet Yilmaz, also known as Khalid al-Turki, was a known terrorist and senior leader in al-Qaeda who operated a cell that facilitated the movement of foreign fighters into Iraq for al-Qaeda operations.

Yilmaz was positively identified through photo comparison and a forged Iraqi personal identification card was also found on him.

Yilmaz was an al-Qaeda leader who led a group of Turks to Afghanistan in 2001 to fight against Coalition Forces. Intelligence reports indicate he was wounded in the fighting there and went to Pakistan for treatment, where he was captured by the government in 2004 and deported to Turkey. He was released in late 2005 and returned to al-Qaeda operations in 2006, moving his operations to Iraq. Turkish authorities are also investigating several terrorist operations that may have involved Yilmaz.

Yilmaz was killed when Coalition Forces targeted him during an operation south of Hawija. As Coalition Forces approached the targeted building, four men got into a vehicle and drove away from the area. Coalition Forces followed the men, one of whom was believed to be Yilmaz. When the vehicle stopped, the men got out of the vehicle with weapons in hand. Coalition Forces, responding appropriately to the hostile threat, engaged the armed men, killing them.

Inside the vehicle, Coalition Forces found rocket-propelled grenades. They safely destroyed the vehicle and weapons on site.

Also killed in the operation was Mehmet Resit Isik, also known as Khalil al-Turki, a close associate of Yilmaz who was assessed to be a courier for the same al-Qaeda cell and a close associate of Yilmaz and senior leaders within al-Qaeda.

“These are two very dangerous, very significant international terrorists that are no longer part of the al-Qaeda network,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. “We will continue to relentlessly pursue the terrorist leaders who plan to deny the Iraqi people a future of their choice.”

“Internet a Front Line in Terror War, Reports Warn”
By Fred Lucas
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
June 27, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) - “The keyboard equals Kalashnikov” is a popular new slogan among radical Islamic groups today, according to a recent report highlighting extremists’ use of the Internet in spreading their message.

The expression, a reworking of “the pen is mightier than the sword,” refers to the computer keyboard and the Russian assault rifle more commonly known as the AK47, popular among radical and terrorist groups for many decades.

Experts are voicing concerns that extremist messages on the web may contribute to radicalization, even among residents of the United States.

Islamist groups have created a sophisticated online media network, complete with multi-media video and audio, to spread their message to audiences speaking English and other Western languages, several studies have shown.

According to one organization, radical groups want to go further, infiltrating mainstream, non-political, non-Islamic websites and forums to further spread their message.”

How wonderful to hear that you are ok and so is Clyde.

Good thinking to always be prepared, that is what Dr. Bill Wattenberg suggests, he also says to be sure you are never without walking shoes, as when the traffic jam stops you dead in the traffic, you will need to walk for miles.

Stay safe.

“’Syria arming Palestinian camps’”
By JPOST STAFF AND AP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora said Wednesday that Syria was sending weapons to Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and vowed to bring up the issue before the Arab League.

“In recent weeks, ammunition, weapons and fighters have been brought to the camps,” Saniora told reporters on a visit to France.

Saniora added that he had asked the United Nations to renew the mandate of international peacekeepers in his country, despite an attack last weekend that killed six members of the force.”

“Israel’s Missing Children”
25 years of faith, hope, and love

By Patrick Reilly
Special to ASSIST News Service

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “JERUSALEM, ISRAEL (ANS) — Zachary Baumel, Zvi Feldman and Yehuda Katz, three members of the Israeli Defence Force, were remembered with special prayers on Monday, June 11th, by their families in Israel and by family and friends around the world who were praying for their safe return.

The three young Israeli soldiers have been missing in action (MIA) for 25 years and two weeks from when they were taken captive during the 1982 Lebanon war, just hours before an agreed ceasefire ended the bloody battle.

Their capture followed a night of fierce fighting against Syrian and Palestinian forces during the first war with Lebanon on June 11th 1982, near the village of Sultan Yakoub, when their tanks were hit with anti-tank missiles.”

German Anti-Abortionist Sentenced to Jail
Lutheran Theologian Compares Abortion with Holocaust

By Wolfgang Polzer
Special to ASSIST News Service

ERLANGEN (ANS) — A German theologian has been sentenced to one year in jail for drawing a comparison between abortion and the Holocaust.

A court in Erlangen near Nuremberg found Johannes Lerle, 55, guilty of “incitement of the people” by denying the Holocaust. Lerle has launched an appeal against the verdict.

The Lutheran theologian and anti-abortionist claims that the “infanticide” in the womb is comparable to the Nazis’ systematic mass murder of Jews in concentration camps, for instance Auschwitz.

Lerle has six previous convictions for slander because he labeled physicians, who perform abortions, as “professional killers”. He has already spent eight months in jail.

The current case concerned a pamphlet published on the Internet. Lerle called the murder of Jews by the Nazis as “supposed injustice”. As a consequence he was accused of disturbing the public peace by denying the Holocaust.

Lerle rejected the accusation on the grounds that he had only quoted the Federal Constitutional Court. The court had refused to accept Lerle’s application for a verdict against the abortion practice in Germany. The court used the term “supposed injustice” with regard to the killing of unborn children.

In judicial terms all abortions are illegal in Germany. But they will not be punished if they are performed within the first three months of pregnancy and if the mother has undergone a certified consultation.

These abortions are often falsely referred to as legal. Approximately 120,000 non-punishable abortions are officially recorded in Germany each year. But Pro Life advocates estimate that up to 200,000 babies are killed in their mother’s womb, if one takes the unregistered cases into account.

Wolfgang Polzer (57), is senior news editor of the Evangelical News Agency idea, Wetzlar (Germany), which he joined in 1981. In all, he has spent 30 years in Christian media. Wolfgang can be contacted by e-mail at: Wolfgang.Polzer@idea.de.

Iran not keeping its word on stabilizing Iraq: US-(laugh or cry)
afp ^ | 6/27/07 | afp

Posted on 06/28/2007 3:40:40 AM PDT by Flavius

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States asked Iran to live up to commitments to bring about a stable Iraq, saying it was critical for resuming a dialogue with Tehran on Iraqi security, the State Department said Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT

It was responding to Iraqi requests for such a meeting, first held in May. Tehran has said it was awaiting a US response on resuming the dialogue.

“We’ll take a look and see when a meeting is appropriate but it is important for Iran to follow through on its stated desire to have a more stable Iraq and today, their activities remain in distinct contradiction to that stated goal,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

I got a phone call yesterday from Jill - her husband has been injured in a traffic accident. She doesn’t know how serious it is yet, just that it’s been several hours and he has not yet been able to speak to her. She’s on her way to the hospital but he was over 500 miles from home and it’s taking time. I asked how I could help and she had only one thing - for me to get word to her friends on Threat Matrix and ask them send up prayers for her husband’s recovery. Could you please post this prayer request for Jill?

Thanks!
