However, now I do not feel alone. Peggy Noonan has a new column up in the Wall Street Journal Opinion Journal. She has clearly said what has been getting me down. I think I knew what was up, but couldn't put a finger on it. I knew it centered around the immigration debate, and the way our congressional leaders are behaving. That sentiment especially includes Mr. Bush too, but when I read this column, I felt like Charlie Brown yelling at Lucy at her Psychology booth when he yells, "That's it!" when trying to identify why he can't get into the Christmas spirit.

The White House doesn't need its traditional supporters anymore, because its problems are way beyond being solved by the base. And the people in the administration don't even much like the base. Desperate straits have left them liberated, and they are acting out their disdain. Leading Democrats often think their base is slightly mad but at least their heart is in the right place. This White House thinks its base is stupid and that its heart is in the wrong place.
For almost three years, arguably longer, conservative Bush supporters have felt like sufferers of battered wife syndrome. You don't like endless gushing spending, the kind that assumes a high and unstoppable affluence will always exist, and the tax receipts will always flow in? Too bad! You don't like expanding governmental authority and power? Too bad. You think the war was wrong or is wrong? Too bad.
But on immigration it has changed from "Too bad" to "You're bad."
The president has taken to suggesting that opponents of his immigration bill are unpatriotic--they "don't want to do what's right for America." His ally Sen. Lindsey Graham has said,

Oh really? Even when an overwhelming majority of the people want a specific policy enacted and enforced? 80% of the people want the borders closed and our existing laws enforced and the President ignores that? That is no Constitutional Republic my friend. That is a dictatorship and the will of the people be damned!
The borders situation we have is a nightmare, and the proposed immigration "fix" is a surefire path to more socialism. I am extremely disappointed in the Senate bill, and the lack of insistence on paying back taxes, the expanded offers of federal programs, and the lack of insistence that those here illegally pay substantial fines to become legal residence.

I doubt that there are millions who are unemployed and not showing on unemployment rate data, you simply cannot hide millions of unemployed people from data conducte dby the government and other independent agencies. They will find about them when they fill for unemployment benefits or other services.
Moreover the 151.4 million people that make the US Labor force include the UNEMPLOYED according to the CIA Facts Book.

Congress, not matter who is in power, will never do what is right when it comes to more votes to remain in control. The Dem’s want the illegals to become legal so they’ll get the votes and the Republicans are too scared of the reaction if they stand against this bill.
What is needed in this country is term limits... and NOW.
You aren't thinking down the road. Who is going to replace the Illegals once they become legal and demand an honest days living wage plus benefits? Who is going to replace them when their backs wear out or they get old? Who will take care of them?
You think the US is a sponge? These are the low-skilled uneducated people, who will become a burden to society and do nothing more than drain our social services at the tax-payer expense.
When our country is bankrupt, and hard working honest Americans are denied Social Security and Medicare, will you still like it here? I doubt it.

It is extremely hypocritical to suddenly snatch up our skirts in a spasm of self righteous morality and declare that 20 million people must just "go home." The fact is that we knew we needed these people, we turned our heads the other way, the trickle became a stream, then a river, then a flood and now folks want to demand that we not only dam the breah, but drain this huge lake.
It ain't gonna happen, should not happen, and only wastes emotional energy ranting about it. We should rather focus on:
1_ Securing the border
2_ Expelling the undesireables here (and contrary to freeperdom, this does NOT include every illegal here)
3_ Bringing the folks who are here, willing to acculturate, and willing to fit OUR way of life, into conformity with a legal status

Just because previous generations of Americans fell for a Ponzi scheme named Social Security does not mean we need to let millions of illegals into the country just so they can pay for the baby boomers retirement. We are a nation of laws or we are not. If the government can pick which laws to obey maybe I can to. Maybe I will just stop paying taxes. The government would come after me big time. There would be consequences for me why not illegals.
That "there must be consequences" (for being here illegally) DOES NOT EQUAL "expell them all." A fine is a punishment. Given the situation, I think that fits the crime much better.
Before you so easily throw out the “LIAR”, like a 5 year old you should know what you’re talking about. Unemployed biz owners can’t collect unemployment, which is what the government bases its figures on. My county is 8.9% unemployed. This economy you so cherish is held up by those who are subsidizing it for the few and it’s killing them.
Small family farmers in Virginia are out of business because they can’t compete with illegal labor! This costs them their livelihood and their homes. You need to read this book:

Do you really think that there are 8 million Americans who are unemployed and are ready to fill the millions of cheap labor jobs that illegal immigrants are doing?
If an American business decides to pay low wages with little benefit why American workers are not joining in? The answer is simple which is that the vast majority of Americans will not do those jobs with low wages and little to no benefits. The government cannot force a business to pay higher wages and more benefits to their employees or else this will be socialism and not that what is the best economy is about, it is about Free Market Capitalist economy.
In other words, not the hard-working law-abiding mom and pop shops, but those who break the law. They probably also evade taxes.

Funny how someone who lives in the First World, with First World living expenses, is unwilling to work for Third World wages. Frankly, the fact that you have migrated to a First World country, yet you are a cheerleader for those who wish to make America into a Third World country, is appalling.
