Peggy Noonan and The WSJ Editorial - It's Time to Revolt!
Red State ^ | June 1, 2007

Posted on 06/01/2007 5:41:16 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

However, now I do not feel alone. Peggy Noonan has a new column up in the Wall Street Journal Opinion Journal. She has clearly said what has been getting me down. I think I knew what was up, but couldn't put a finger on it. I knew it centered around the immigration debate, and the way our congressional leaders are behaving. That sentiment especially includes Mr. Bush too, but when I read this column, I felt like Charlie Brown yelling at Lucy at her Psychology booth when he yells, "That's it!" when trying to identify why he can't get into the Christmas spirit.

Try this clip on for size :

The White House doesn't need its traditional supporters anymore, because its problems are way beyond being solved by the base. And the people in the administration don't even much like the base. Desperate straits have left them liberated, and they are acting out their disdain. Leading Democrats often think their base is slightly mad but at least their heart is in the right place. This White House thinks its base is stupid and that its heart is in the wrong place.

For almost three years, arguably longer, conservative Bush supporters have felt like sufferers of battered wife syndrome. You don't like endless gushing spending, the kind that assumes a high and unstoppable affluence will always exist, and the tax receipts will always flow in? Too bad! You don't like expanding governmental authority and power? Too bad. You think the war was wrong or is wrong? Too bad.

But on immigration it has changed from "Too bad" to "You're bad."

The president has taken to suggesting that opponents of his immigration bill are unpatriotic--they "don't want to do what's right for America." His ally Sen. Lindsey Graham has said,

Definitely it is not a dictatorship but also it a Constitutional Republic i.e the President does not govern based on the public opinions.

Oh really? Even when an overwhelming majority of the people want a specific policy enacted and enforced? 80% of the people want the borders closed and our existing laws enforced and the President ignores that? That is no Constitutional Republic my friend. That is a dictatorship and the will of the people be damned!

Incredible isn’t it :) You and me are very realistic about this issue of illegal immigration but unfortunately we are a tiny minority on this forum.

that said, I think the current immigration bill is a disaster. However, the points you are making are valid. It is also true that we are NOT reproducing enough "American made" babies to avoid a titanic demographic shift which will be destructive to us as a culture. The fact is that our internal repro rate is down aroun 1.7 babies per couple. We need 2.3 babies per couple in order to maintain. Were it not for the influx of immigrants into the USA, we would be facing the same disasterous effects of the Soviet Union, Italy, and Spain. The fact is, that we need the immigrants here for a variety of reasons.

The borders situation we have is a nightmare, and the proposed immigration "fix" is a surefire path to more socialism. I am extremely disappointed in the Senate bill, and the lack of insistence on paying back taxes, the expanded offers of federal programs, and the lack of insistence that those here illegally pay substantial fines to become legal residence.

And the MILLIONS of self employed landscapers, craftsmen, farmers, etc. are out of business because of cheap imported labor. NONE of them show on the umemployment rolls

I doubt that there are millions who are unemployed and not showing on unemployment rate data, you simply cannot hide millions of unemployed people from data conducte dby the government and other independent agencies. They will find about them when they fill for unemployment benefits or other services.

Moreover the 151.4 million people that make the US Labor force include the UNEMPLOYED according to the CIA Facts Book.

Ever heard of this???
“Saturday, September 30, 2006:

The Senate gave final approval last night to legislation authorizing the construction of 700 miles of double-layered fencing on the U.S.-Mexico border, shelving President Bush’s vision of a comprehensive overhaul of U.S. immigration laws in favor of a vast barrier.

The measure was pushed hard by House Republican leaders, who badly wanted to pass a piece of legislation that would make good on their promises to get tough on illegal immigrants, despite warnings from critics that a multibillion-dollar fence would do little to address the underlying economic, social and law enforcement problems, or to prevent others from slipping across the border. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) surprised many advocates of a more comprehensive approach to immigration problems when he took up the House bill last week.”

So the Republican did take a stand. Know how much of this 700 mile fence has been built???? 2 miles!

Congress, not matter who is in power, will never do what is right when it comes to more votes to remain in control. The Dem’s want the illegals to become legal so they’ll get the votes and the Republicans are too scared of the reaction if they stand against this bill.

What is needed in this country is term limits... and NOW.

JV, AuntB answered the question you posed to me.

You aren't thinking down the road. Who is going to replace the Illegals once they become legal and demand an honest days living wage plus benefits? Who is going to replace them when their backs wear out or they get old? Who will take care of them?

You think the US is a sponge? These are the low-skilled uneducated people, who will become a burden to society and do nothing more than drain our social services at the tax-payer expense.

When our country is bankrupt, and hard working honest Americans are denied Social Security and Medicare, will you still like it here? I doubt it.

He said, ""This is our home, and WE get to decide who comes into our home!" What do you think of that comment? Of course. I agree, and am in favor of having actual BORDERS. That does not address the question of "what do you do when you have already invited them in?"

It is extremely hypocritical to suddenly snatch up our skirts in a spasm of self righteous morality and declare that 20 million people must just "go home." The fact is that we knew we needed these people, we turned our heads the other way, the trickle became a stream, then a river, then a flood and now folks want to demand that we not only dam the breah, but drain this huge lake.

It ain't gonna happen, should not happen, and only wastes emotional energy ranting about it. We should rather focus on:
1_ Securing the border
2_ Expelling the undesireables here (and contrary to freeperdom, this does NOT include every illegal here)
3_ Bringing the folks who are here, willing to acculturate, and willing to fit OUR way of life, into conformity with a legal status

I believe that one drops off of unemployment rolls after 6 months, after benefits run out, or after a period of time of not actively looking for work. You don't stay on the rolls perpetually.

Just because previous generations of Americans fell for a Ponzi scheme named Social Security does not mean we need to let millions of illegals into the country just so they can pay for the baby boomers retirement. We are a nation of laws or we are not. If the government can pick which laws to obey maybe I can to. Maybe I will just stop paying taxes. The government would come after me big time. There would be consequences for me why not illegals.

That "there must be consequences" (for being here illegally) DOES NOT EQUAL "expell them all." A fine is a punishment. Given the situation, I think that fits the crime much better.

Before you so easily throw out the “LIAR”, like a 5 year old you should know what you’re talking about. Unemployed biz owners can’t collect unemployment, which is what the government bases its figures on. My county is 8.9% unemployed. This economy you so cherish is held up by those who are subsidizing it for the few and it’s killing them.

Small family farmers in Virginia are out of business because they can’t compete with illegal labor! This costs them their livelihood and their homes. You need to read this book:
http://www.kingsolver.com/home/index.asp

Now, here is a entire page of polling of business owners, and it is in complete contrast to your claims that ‘small business all hire illegals.

http://www.smartbusinesspractices.com/polls.php

Owners of independent businesses oppose expansion of “temporary guest worker programs to ease worker shortages” by a nearly 3-1 margin. Only 24 percent favored expanding guest worker programs.
National Federation of Independent Business survey, 2002

An amnesty for illegal aliens with long-term jobs is opposed by a more than 4-1 margin among owners of independent businesses. Only 16 percent say illegal aliens should have the right to “earn” their way to legal residency through work.
National Federation of Independent Business survey, 2000

Owners of independent businesses support federal fines against businesses that hire illegal aliens. Only 26 percent say sanctions against hiring illegal workers should be repealed.
National Federation of Independent Business survey, 1996

83 percent of respondents support fingerprinting and random interviewing of non-citizens entering the country (see question #34).
Fox News/Opinion Dynamics Poll, April 2004

Do you really think that there are 8 million Americans who are unemployed and are ready to fill the millions of cheap labor jobs that illegal immigrants are doing?

If an American business decides to pay low wages with little benefit why American workers are not joining in? The answer is simple which is that the vast majority of Americans will not do those jobs with low wages and little to no benefits. The government cannot force a business to pay higher wages and more benefits to their employees or else this will be socialism and not that what is the best economy is about, it is about Free Market Capitalist economy.

From your numbers, it looks like the same folks unscrupulous enough to hire illegal labor are the same ones who buy politicians to make that practice legal.

In other words, not the hard-working law-abiding mom and pop shops, but those who break the law. They probably also evade taxes.

Exactly. How anyone sees illegally subsidizing these corporations as ‘free market’ is beyond me!

Funny how someone who lives in the First World, with First World living expenses, is unwilling to work for Third World wages. Frankly, the fact that you have migrated to a First World country, yet you are a cheerleader for those who wish to make America into a Third World country, is appalling.

Cheap labor have been part of the US economy for many generations and yet Americans and those who live in America have the best standards of living than any other country in the world, and the US economy is the most powerful, most technologically advanced economy in history of mankind and it is more so now than ever before.

God bless America.
