Potent symbols: Iraqi boy shelters behind U.S. soldier

Some news photos are so rich in symbolism they're almost like Renaissance paintings in how much they communicate.

Such an Associated Press photo appeared on the front page of the New York Times's national edition.

It’s a picture of the scene after a bombing in Baghdad yesterday. Adding to the chaos of the bombing which killed at least 21 people and injured at least 66 was a shooter, maybe targeting people in the crowd.

Amid all the Iraqis who are running from the gunfire was a U.S. soldier, standing tall, perhaps looking in the direction of the gunshots, not apparently looking for cover.

An Iraqi boy seeks shelter behind the soldier, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division.

The truth is the entire civilized world takes cover behind the US armed forces. Great picture...Wonder if it’ll show up on the cover of Time or Newsweek. Hmmm. Guess not.

Incredible and a great job.

Reminds me of my sons when they were growing up and something scary was about to happen or was happening. My brave sons would be fighting to get in behind Dad.

I never walk without my Oregon walking/wading stick which is about 5’ tall, 1.5 inches in diameter at the biggest end and about 1 inch in diameter at the small end with an obious metal tip. The stick is a great Oregon Mrytlewood, a very hard and durable hardwood. It is great protection against unchained or untethered dogs. So called homeless people look at the stick and then look away.

The dog owners all ways say Fido won’t bite. I tell them that is good because if Fido tries to bite me he/she/it is dead, and then I’m coming for you. When one spins a big stick like this at about the speed of sound, dogs usually run away. I have wacked a couple and put them down and out. The owners have left the area.

On a visit by my Grandkids a couple of months ago we were walking a few blocks from home. A very vicious dog jumped off the non enclosed front deck and started for us. The kids got behind me like the kid in the picture and their Dad and Uncle used to do.

The dog charged and lost consciousness for some reason. The owner came out and started to threaten me, I cited the city law to him re unchained dogs and my law. He went inside until we left the culdesac. The kids were like two extra growths attached to my backside.

On future walks by myself, the dog is no longer on the front deck unattended, he is probably in back if he is still around.

Great story! Guess it’s instinctive for kids to do that and they go to the ONE who will protect them!

Sounds like you better keep carrying that walking stick, lol. Good for ‘snakes in the grass’ too, but guess you haven’t run into Hillary yet...

Unbelievable chaos on the streets of Baghdad.

Too bad our congressionals don’t get to walk with these soldiers when they go to Baghdad. This is what they ought to see — not the insides of palaces.

I’d just bet they’d change their points of view about what the soldiers need and get realllllllll quick.

I’d be in favor of giving the military a blank check providing any such bill did not have one little drop of pig fat in it. Just the necessaries for the soldiers.

Like that will ever happen.

God Bless this soldier and this little boy. He has more respect for the US military than many US senators.

There is no policy difference between the RATS in Congress and the terrorists.

“Blessings on that soldier in particular but blessings on each of them.”

Exactly! Though I do wish that we could learn the identity of this particular hero.

One look at the pictures should bring the thought to mind.....My God, what men!

Where in Heaven's name do we find such men to go forth into the maw of the beast and battle the fanatical forces of Darkness?!

We, who sit here at home, in our comfort and security. We, who travel freely, without thought of nearly instant annihilation from hidden explosives. We, who fill our bellies with food and drink, who endure our days in relative comfort. Have we earned their fealty? Their loyalty, sense of duty and commitment to us?

The best of America is represented by just such men as in the photo.

We should feel humbled and honored by their presence and their very existence.

God Bless such men and may God have mercy on us if we do not acknowledge their heroism.
