Sicko: GMA Uses Moore Movie, Liberal Group to Push Universal Health Care
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 05/30/2007 5:51:04 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

ABC's prescription for pushing universal health care:

Today's "Good Morning America" took Barack Obama's announcement yesterday of his health care proposal as a jumping-off point for a segment on the broader issue. Co-host Diane Sawyer flashed a graphic showing that according to an ABC News poll, 56% of Americans favor Universal health coverage. What Diane didn't tell you: the number of people backing universal coverage has dipped since ABC last conducted such a poll, when support was at 62%.

Sawyer handed things over to ABC correspondent Claire Shipman, who promptly cited the poll finding that most people are more interested in universal coverage than in keeping taxes down. But again, she didn't disclose that the margin of people preferring coverage over lower taxes has fallen significantly since the last time ABC polled. Other inconvenient poll findings we didn't hear about: by a 2-1 margin, people think universal coverage would make the quality of their own care worse, and by better than 2-1 think it would worsen their choice of doctors or hospitals.

Shipman emphasized how times have changed since the Hillarycare disaster of 1993:
Clinton's effort to promote universal health care roiled her husband's presidency. But these days a healthcare plan is a must-have for candidates and for Democrats the buzz word is "universal."
We then heard from Ron Pollack, Executive Director of Families USA, who put in a brief plug for coverage. Pollack is a former Clinton appointee. Families USA is a liberal advocacy group that promotes universal coverage. Phillipe Villers, its founder and president, also serves on the ACLU President's Committee and the Amnesty International USA's Executive Directors Council. ABC predictably didn't bother to give us any background on the benignly-named organization.

Shipman then shifted to Michael Moore's upcoming documentary, Sicko. Said Shipman:
The issue could soon get hotter with this: [cut to a clip from movie] "He sawed off the top of two of his fingers," the upcoming release of Michael Moore's new film, Sicko, his scathing look at the healthcare system. [Back to movie clip] "The hospital gave him a choice: re-attach the middle finger for $60,000, or do the ring finger, for $12,000."

As she spoke, GMA helpfully ran a clip from Sicko showing drawings [displayed here] of the detached fingers.

ABC found it unnecessary to invite any guests to balance with a free-market perspective Pollack or Moore's weighty, big government views. To the contrary, she closed by again suggesting that the tide was moving in the direction of support for universal coverage:

Who would have thought, candidates fighting over ownership of the phrase "universal health care"?

Co-host Robin Roberts was happy to agree: "Who would have thunk it?"
Shipman & Co. didn't let ABC's own poll, showing support for universal coverage dropping, rain on their big government parade.

There was an article in the Boston Globe of all places about a health care meeting that was attended by Hillery Clinton and Denny Hestert. Hestert said her plan wasn’t workable because people might not just go to the doctor on their own, or even know when to. She told him, “will tell them when to go”. To which Hestert said to an aide, “that’s tyrannical”.

Between this and giving 15 million illgeals amnesty, I am convinced that these people really do mean to destroy the country. Of course the pols responsible for establishing such a massive bureaucracy will be exempt from its tender mercies, just as they don’t rely on Social Security like the plebes they govern do. And of course Michael Moore is the final authority on health care. I think he should have to spend a month in a British or Canadian public hospital just to get more facts.

When does the revolution start?

remember when Cuba advocated quarantining AIDS patients? Let that one out of the bag and we’ll see how many people want that style health care!

I experienced ‘government provided healthcare’ while I was in the service.

No thanks. While what we can accomplish in combat triage is magnificent, the overall ‘routine’ care SUCKED, BIG TIME.

This is where only five percent of all living Americans being vets hurts the country. If it was 30 percent, nobody would DARE bring this up as a viable option.

I wish everyone would realize that we can’t afford “free healthcare”. I heard Obama say the other day that his healthcare plans would be paid for by the rich people - no one else would be paying more.

This is the kind of lie that people want to believe. The Republican candidates need to be educating the people on what something like free healthcare would really mean & how much it would really cost. They better be jumping on this - or with the help of the media - the libs are going to “own” this issue.

Mike Moore is still well known for a reason. His talent is two fold, he is a master at distorting the facts, (aka lying), and he is able to zero in on topics of great interest to the average joe.
I consider myself to be an average joe, and here’s what I see in regards to healthcare:

- The cost is going up constantly, faster than inflation. That would be not only my cost, (copays, and contribution to insurance), but also what insurance pays to providers.

- One catastrophic illness wipes you out. I’ve built a decent life. Would like to leave my kids something. If I were to take ill, or my wife, (God forbid), the costs of a prolonged illness would drain every last dime of what I’ve accumulated. And it’s not uncommon to see this happen.

- People in transition are screwed. My daughter is an example. She’s been going to one university nearby, now she’s transferred, meaning she has to take additional classes. It took her a year to figure out what she wanted to do, then she had a serious accident that cost her time. She’s got 2 years left, and she’s 22. After she turns 23, my health insurance will no longer cover her. What then? Obviously we have to buy insurance on top of all the other expenses.

Government screws up everything it touches. No doubt in my mind. BUT... something has to be done. And healthcare is something that touches us all.

And here is the bottom line. Our next president, Hillary!, is saying ugly things that sound good to those in trouble. The abandon the on your own society. That sells.
If the GOP answer to the healthcare problem is the FR answer: Plan better, get richer, deal with it. Well, Mikey Moore is going to be dining a lot at the White House after January 09.

When does the revolution start?

Now, now. You can't say "revolution." You can advocate universal health care, or open borders, or American retreat or surrender, but "revolution" is a way to destroy America. /s

It amazes me that the people who think that the military can’t do anything right believe that the government can run a healthcare program

Have they never been to the DMV?

The CDC just quarantined a man who was travelling with a drug resistant strain of TB. I guess that his disease was not politically correct enough than he should be permitted to do as he pleases (even if that includes having random unprotected sex in public bath house orgies).

Bill Gates and those Google guys each have tens of billions but even if we take every penny, it still wouldn't fund it.

Why don't Gates and Soros and others FUND their own privately run charity to provide free health care for the poor?

“...but “revolution” is a way to destroy America.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The revolution we need is the same one that was fought by the Founders. “To establish a more perfect Union.” My understanding would be to restore something more akin to their original design rather than the abomination that currently “serves” us from the Beltway.

Count me IN!
