PROVIDENCE, R.I. - One of the three former Duke lacrosse players cleared of rape charges earlier this year announced Tuesday he will attend Brown University in the fall and play lacrosse for the Bears.
"I hope to make them proud of accepting me as a student," Reade Seligmann said in a statement provided to The Associated Press by his attorney, Jim Cooney. "I am looking forward to just being a student again."
Brown confirmed in a brief statement that Seligmann was expected on campus this fall. Lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany did not return calls seeking comment.
Seligmann, who was a sophomore, was indicted, along with fellow players Collin Finnerty and Dave Evans, on charges of rape, kidnapping and sexual offense. A woman had told police she was attacked by three men at a March 2006 lacrosse team party where she was hired to perform as a stripper.
The season was canceled, and Seligmann and Finnerty, both sophomores, were suspended. Evans graduated the day before he was indicted.
The rape charges were dropped in December, and North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper declared the trio innocent while dropping the remaining charges last month.
Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong, who led the investigation before turning it over to state prosecutors, goes on trial next month for ethics violations connected to his handling of the case.
Seligmann and Finnerty were invited back to Duke. Finnerty remains undecided.
Seligmann's announcement came a day after the Blue Devils lost to Johns Hopkins 12-11 in the NCAA championship game in Baltimore.
"I appreciate the support and loyalty of my teammates and coaches at Duke," Seligmann said. "I will miss them. I know that they will understand why I cannot return to Duke."
(This version CORRECTS that Evans was not suspended because he had graduated from Duke.)
Good for him. Here’s to a great season for Brown Lacrosse.
I’m just astounded that Duke invited them back. What cheek !
I suppose it's too much to hope that they did so with great embarrassment.
Duke will, I hope, have the decency to refund the full tuition that he paid as a privileged white male student.
Don’t blame the guy one bit. I wouldn’t go back to Duke. I wouldn’t go back to Duke if I were him, even if they offered him the moon.
Too bad that pizzant Nifong is not in jail.
‘swhere he belongs. What he did was abuse of office. Three to five years and loss of his law license seems about right.
Probably will never happen.
Brown is a much better school than Duke, anyway...Duke is a “pretend” ivy-league...

Good luck with that, young fella. When it comes to PC bullshit, Brown makes Duke look like the editorial offices of Human Events. He may get a rough welcome once the fascists who rule Brown realize that he's coming.
Yes, that was my reaction, too. Brown is the leftmost of all the ivies, IMHO.
I hope he fares well at Brown. It’s a pretty liberal school and popular with the offspring of the Hollyweird crowd. Just read this morning that at the commencement, this weekend ,the faces of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins along with Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman were seen in the audience. I also believe Jane Fonda’s son or daughter is an alumni.
Seems to me just about all of them have the liberal bend. Heaven help you if you’re conservative or espouse a conservative viewpoint. And that’s a shame.
The faculty at Brown makes the gang of 88 look like Joe Francis and the staff of Mantra films.
My son wound up going to Duke for the first of his three degrees. He got a great education there and had a great experience. Sure, it's a liberal, PC campus, but you can do pretty well for yourself there if you are serious.
Cornell is more conservative I think- or does Princeton do LAX
Brown??? I think that kid just jumped from the frying pan into the fire. Brown is the most liberal by far of all the Ivy League schools.
