OMAHA, Nebraska - Dozens of Somali meatpacking workers who quit their jobs because they were not given enough time off for Muslim prayers have returned to work, but the issue could resurface as sundown inches later through the summer, a union official said Friday.
About 70 of 120 Somali workers are back on the job at the Swift & Co. meatpacking plant after abruptly quitting last week. The workers complained that existing break time rules did not let them leave lines to pray at sundown.
Similar requests for workplace accommodations of Muslim religious obligations have become common around the country, says Muslim advocates...
The company agreed to accommodate the workers as much as it could within the contract, company and union officials said...
Company officials worry that sunset prayers could take too many workers off production lines, forcing them to be shut down, Hoppes said...
It was the largest single-day employee loss at the plant since December, when 261 workers were arrested as part of a raid of Swift plants in six states by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
Mohamed Rage, chairman of the Omaha Somali-American Community Organization, said...
There will always be a friction, but we have to have the tool to fix any problem that arises at the future.

What an appropriate name!
Muslims are one of those protected minorities with more status than the rest of us. Welcome to 21st century America. >_<

Could I give up work for Lent?

How many of the 70 are illegals?
Probably none of them.
US immigration policy encourages diversity by restricting legal entry of white Europeans, and encouraging entry of Third World inhabitants.
What was not mentioned in the article...I’m pretty sure the company went up and hinted to the fine boys...that Latinos would gladly take the jobs and not say a word about prayer. Trust me...there are 50,000 Latinos who would walk right in and never ask for a minute for prayer time. The media probably wasn’t smart enough to ask that question. And the striker leadership? They really put themselves into jeopardy with both the company and their Islamic brothers. This never should have come up or been an issue.
The one thing that makes a Latino better than any Islamic character...is the will to work for cash, and get ahead.
Does that Swift & Co. meatpacking plant process pork products? If not, they should begin to do so immediately.
Problem! They were allowed to return to work rather than being deported to Somalia. Let's get serious folks!
You know, when someone tells me about stuff like this, I tell them my religion instructs me to “Pray without ceasing”, not just 5 times a day.
Does this mean I can tell my employer I never have to work?
Interestingly, many of the people complaining about this will be complaining in the next breath about school prayer being restricted for Christians.
Hey I’ll back that idea.
“The one thing that makes a Latino better than any Islamic character...is the will to work for cash, and get ahead.”
The one thing that makes a Latino worse than any Islamic character...is the will to work for cash, and not pay taxes.
The real God doesn’t care when you pray.
Put em to work on the pork line.
Somalis’ eh?...this former Ranger has little tolerance for their antics.
