Conservative Republicans working to block a compromise immigration bill risk endorsing a "silent amnesty" by insisting on unfeasible mass deportations, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in an interview published on Thursday.
In remarks to USA Today, Chertoff also criticized liberal immigrant rights advocates, saying they could prolong the anguish of immigrant families by withholding support for legislation that could give them legal status.
Chertoff spoke to the newspaper's editorial board in a preview of a Bush administration media campaign to build support of broad immigration legislation being debated by the U.S. Senate, USA Today said.
The compromise bill brokered between the White House and a bipartisan group of senators ties tough border security and work place enforcement measures to the guest worker program and a plan to legalize an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.
The measure has drawn criticism from many quarters and its fate in the Senate is uncertain.
The bill has been criticized for placing new limits on family-based immigration and conservative Republicans oppose the legalization program saying it would reward people who broke U.S. laws.
Chertoff acknowledged there is "a fundamental unfairness" in legislation that permits illegal immigrants to remain in the United States but said trying to force them to leave would be impossible, USA Today reported.
"We are bowing to reality," Chertoff said.
He dismissed the position of some opponents who argue that illegal immigrants will leave if strict enforcement of U.S. laws makes it impossible for them to find a job.
"You're not going to replace 12 million people who are doing the work they're currently doing," Chertoff said. "If they don't leave, then you are going to give them silent amnesty. You're either going to let them stay or you're going to be hypocritical."
Chertoff warned there would be more mass roundups of illegal workers if the workers do not get a chance to become legal.
"We're going to enforce the law," he said. "People all around the country will be seeing teary-eyed children whose parents are going to be deported."

If they think we are stupid enough to believe they will jump the hoops expected in this proposed legislation and if the govenment thinks that is possible, then I see no reason why mass deportations can’t take place. They seem to think they have the necessary tools to process the 12-20 million.
“”We’re going to enforce the law,” he said. “People all around the country will be seeing teary-eyed children whose parents are going to be deported.””
He thinks this satisfies the lust he projects unto us.
Probably the WH mindset.
I’m sick of listening to government tell us what they can’t do. They sure as hell didn’t have any trouble making the mess in the first place.
This issue has done the impossible...its driven left and right together...you boys inside the Beltway better start thinking how you can save face and withdraw this shamnesty bill.

That’s good! But why don’t I believe him?
“We’re going to enforce the law,” he said. “People all around the country will be seeing teary-eyed children whose parents are going to be deported.”
Well get with it. I’m sorry but I am not swayed. Yes those children belong with their parents but those parents belong in Mexico. The solution is send them all home to Mexico.
Remember Whitewater Hearings etc. Chertoff was counsel for the Republicans.. gee I wonder why the hearings went NOWHERE. But he got rewarded for his sham.
People all around the country will be seeing teary-eyed children whose parents are going to be deported.
Well at least that would mean you are doing your job. You know the thing we the people expect you to do on our behalf. YOUR JOB! Of course these “teary-eyed” children could go with their mom and dad’s or had their mom and dad’s not broke the law entering our country in the first place it wouldn’t be a problem at all would it?

And he doesn't seem to understand what Homeland Security means. The only thing worse then a traitor is a traitor who's an incompetent idiot.
Children of illegal aliens should not be granted citizenship merely because their mothers managed to give birth to them in the US. Any reasonable immigration bill has to do something to close this loophole in current law.
Conservative Republicans working to block a compromise immigration bill risk endorsing a “silent amnesty” by insisting on unfeasible mass deportations,
***Baloney! RICO lawyers could do it in a few years and MAKE MONEY at the same time. I’m surprised they haven’t done it already.
In the absence of enforcement,we can get the word out in the meantime that there is money to be made in filing RICO lawsuits against employers who hire illegal aliens.
Employers would have no trouble shutting down the border if they could get sued by someone under the RICO statutes for hiring these people in the first place. The next time an illegal alien kills someone in a drunk driving accident or somesuch thing, Im going to point out that the victims family might be able to seek compensation from the employer under these statutes in the hopes that it would catch on. If this did catch on, would see such a swift backlash against illegal immigration that no employer would go near these people and theyll all simply want to go back home.
What kind of parent would leave their children behind to be "teary-eyed"? I thought these invaders were "family-values" types. What's wrong with these illegal invaders taking their anchor babies with them?
I do try my best to be civil when discussing illegal immigration on this or any other forum but this statement is just infuriating to me ... WTF! We are talking about "illegal aliens", "criminals deport-able by law" they are not immigrants! WTF? Sorry for my indiscretions!
Is there a futures market in hemp neckware?
Chertoff is sleight of handing what is going on behind our backs in Washington. www.newsmax.com and click on George Putnam’s “We Are Ruled by “Stealth Government”.
Is this Chertoff’s “it’s for the children” moment?
And he is candidate #1 to replace Gonzales for AG should that position become available for one reason or another. YIPPEE!!
Is it just me, or does anyone else think Chertoff looks like actor Jean Reno.
