I hope your kitty improves. My heart breaks for the lost and ailing pets and their owners.

I've been making raw food for my two cats since early April, when Natural Balance had its first recall. The girls consumed some of the recalled NB food, but fortunately don't appear to have suffered any ill effects. The diet change has had its bumps, and they've both lost weight during the transition (and when they soundly rejected calves liver). I just hope we're stable now . . .

Keep up the IV! I had to do that for our big gray cat a few weeks ago, seen here seated with his girlfriend. After two weeks he was better. Contact your vet again and see if there is anything else they can do. She is a very very pretty cat!

I’m amazed that everyone seems to think this is a cost-cutting manuever by the Chinese instead of a test run.

So sorry for your cat - I’ll say a pet prayer for her - and with me being a dog man, that has to count for something with the Big Pet Owner upstairs.

This episode is yet another reason why I want Duncan Hunter to do well enough in the primaries to get the critical issue of China trade on the table for real.

Nice picture of your cat, BTW. If I may ask, what did you shoot it with?

Your kitties are beautiful!!! Love the bibs! I will keep up the IV until the vet says to stop. He also wants to monitor her liver levels to make she doesn't have fatty liver disease.

My other baby went through a similar trauma over a year ago. She was diagnosed with triad disease. She nearly died. 15lbs down to less than 6. She's now a healthy, happy 14lbs again. She turned 13 in March.

Thanks for the thoughts, Y. I took that pic years ago with a Sony CD Mavica, 3MP. The trick is to use natural light- no flash.

When did these poisonings supposedly start? About four months ago? I suspect it goes back farther than that. Do you know?

“I’m holding onto a bag of Iams chicken & rice because my ate some and puked voluminous amounts several hrs later. I’d never seen her puke like that.”

We have a bag of Iam’s regular cat food that we are holding on to for the same reason.
Our cats were having some strange puking...and then we took them off...then when were heard “it was ok” we put them back on.
They started to puke again (not the grassy..or hair ball type of upchucking...gross bile”ish” puke (sorry if TMI))
So we switched to the Dick Van Patton food.
They have been absolutely fine ever since.

I am very sorry you had to put your animal down.
Very..very sad.

Sending (((HUGS))))

If you define “test run” as probing our defenses and the current confusion and inaction, you may be onto something.

The originally identified supplier of the tainted wheat gluten in China has already had the plant bulldozed.

Nice way to cover up the evidence?

I was doing the premium foods for my 3 dogs. I even did the Royal Canin made especially for Bulldogs. They advertised it would help with gas problems. For me, Iams was the cheapest food I would feed, and I felt guilty about it. After the recall I bought some Ol’Roy, the dry/gravy kind and they attack it like it’s doggie crack or something. I have had dogs my whole life and I’ve never had a dog eat food like they are doing now. They eat it like the dogs on tv commercials. My pug hops around like a dang circus dog, the mixed breed I keep on the deck until the food is out, and the Bulldog must save his energy all day to race to the food bowl, plus his gas problems are better. When we were kids, we all fed the dogs Alpo or whatever was on sale and they all lived to be 18 or more, and they all had their teeth, I can promise you my mom wasn’t brushing any dogs teeth.

“gross bile”ish” puke”

Yes, it had a large amount of fluid. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I’ve never had trouble with Purina One.

Just off the top of my head, the original Menu Foods recall was nine weeks ago.

Menu Foods found their own “test” animals dying. About 7 out of 50 animals in a two week period. This happened about four weeks -before- they bothered to tell anyone via their official recall. Menu Foods stated that they believed they had changed wheat gluten suppliers around January 2007 IIRC.

Public reports of pets with kidney dysfunction started being reported in late February or early March.

There -has- been discussion that contaminated wheat gluten may have been imported by Chem-Nutra in late 2006 and sold to pet food companies other than Menu Foods.

Overall four months ago is the best information available at this time.

Have been feeding my cat Purina Naturals for the last year or so. Most other dry foods don’t agree with him. He can’t eat any dry food containing the colored bits. He can only eat the canned Fancy Feast that is in the paste form as the chunky and grilled kinds get puked right back up.

His delicate stomach has been ongoing for several years so I don’t think it’s related to contaminated food. Unless this contamination has been going on far longer than we have been told.

I've been preparing a raw diet for the girls which is based on the recipes at catnutrition.org. Our vet reviewed the recipes and was pleased with the balance of nutrients. So far, they've been happy with chicken and turkey meat. I had to put some tuna on top of the raw food at first to get them to try it out. It took our calico about 3 weeks to get with the new diet; her sister was more accommodating.

I substituted calves liver for chicken liver in one batch, but have had little luck getting the cats to eat it. They just don't like the strong flavor. I don't want our calico to lose any more weight, so I suspect I'll be tossing some cat food. I have some ground rabbit waiting in the freezer for an upcoming batch of kitty chow. I make up enough to feed them for about 2 weeks and freeze it in small containers to thaw out for daily feedings.

I started out with poultry purchased in the grocery store, supplemented with vitamins and minerals from a local vitamin store (for people). My latest batch is based on whole ground up chicken and chicken hearts and livers ordered from a rabbit farm in western PA. This way they get the calcium from bones directly rather than through bonemeal supplements. If I lived closer to my parents in SW Michigan, I could probably get some great game scraps through Dad's locker. Perhaps this summer I'll get a chance to do that.

What a sweet face. I am very sorry your kitty is sick ... she (and you) are in my prayers.

Purrs and head-bonks to her from my kitties.
