I've been preparing a raw diet for the girls which is based on the recipes at catnutrition.org. Our vet reviewed the recipes and was pleased with the balance of nutrients. So far, they've been happy with chicken and turkey meat. I had to put some tuna on top of the raw food at first to get them to try it out. It took our calico about 3 weeks to get with the new diet; her sister was more accommodating.

I substituted calves liver for chicken liver in one batch, but have had little luck getting the cats to eat it. They just don't like the strong flavor. I don't want our calico to lose any more weight, so I suspect I'll be tossing some cat food. I have some ground rabbit waiting in the freezer for an upcoming batch of kitty chow. I make up enough to feed them for about 2 weeks and freeze it in small containers to thaw out for daily feedings.

I started out with poultry purchased in the grocery store, supplemented with vitamins and minerals from a local vitamin store (for people). My latest batch is based on whole ground up chicken and chicken hearts and livers ordered from a rabbit farm in western PA. This way they get the calcium from bones directly rather than through bonemeal supplements. If I lived closer to my parents in SW Michigan, I could probably get some great game scraps through Dad's locker. Perhaps this summer I'll get a chance to do that.
