...he was stunned to see two large Confederate flags flying from trucks...emblazoned with the words "The South Shall Rise Again." I'm stunned, too, that people still think it is cool to fly this flag. Our society should bury these flags -- not flaunt them...because the Confederate flag symbolizes racial tyranny to so many... ...This flag doesn't belong on city streets, in videos or in the middle of civil discussion. It belongs in our past -- in museums and in history books -- along with the ideas it represents.

Ah...finally we agree. :-)
‘I am in total agreement with you. Just as an aside; the Stars and Bars is the official Confederate flag. What everyone flies is the Confederate Battle flag. This flag was originally flown by naval vessels and later used by the Confederate land forces’
Yep, and these yahoos ranting about the ‘battle flag’ wouldn’t know the ‘unstained banner’ if you hit them with it.
No doubt the first states to secede chose rebellion for that reason. But the remainder seceded once they saw the Union's reaction; once they realized they were living under tyranny.
Slavery existed for almost two hundred years under the Union Jack in original Colonies. BTW, I'm a Carpet Bagger living in North Carolina and consider the Stars and Bars to be an important part of the history of the United States and the South. There are many flags that have flown over different parts of our country since people who respect flags discovered the Americas and they represent everything that makes us better that the rest of the world.
“No, he fought it to preserve the Union and because war was the path that Jefferson Davis chose. “
South Carolina fired on Sumter - a fort in their territory that would not stand down and was a direct threat (kind of like Iraq, in that way), but the other Southern states didn’t.
Virginia didn’t secede until Lincoln ordered them to attack the states further south.
Elements of both sides wanted a war.
“What a stupid statement, apparantly it wasn’t “OK” for us to secede from GB, else we wouldn’t have had to fight the revolutionary war.”
Not my point, or their’s. Of course, obvious points miss you entirely.
“I’d love to see the source for that quote.”
It wasn’t a direct quote, of coures.
‘Most of those in Gray were poor backwoods boys who were fighting for honor.
Actually, they were fighting to keep the federal government within its Constitutional boundaries.’
Question to a Reb private captured in 1862;
‘Why are you fighting? You don’t own slaves, you aren’t a wealthy planation owner.”
Answer “Cause your down here....’
Its the same old-historical southern culturtural attacks that liberals and (primarily) northerners have been fighting since the south said “heck no” back in the 1860’s
So let’s have a rap video with guys calling the ladies bitches and ho’s while capping cops and killing for street cred. Either we have freedom of speech or we don’t.

‘You haven’t ever driven around, say, downtown Detroit, and compared it to any Southern city, have you?
You mean like...New Orleans? Even pre-Katrina?’
Ouch, that’ll leave a mark.
At times like this I remember the relationship between Sherman and Johnston, the way Lee and Grant reacted with utter disdain to any criticism of the other, and the whirlwind romance and marriage of Union Brigadier General Smith Atkins to the daughter of David Lowry Swain, former Governor of North Carolina.
‘That war was won in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.’
Actually it was ‘won’ the moment Vickburg fell, its a testiment to the unbelievable endurance of the South that the war continued for two years after it fell in July of 1863.
To be fair, that's because we're more urbanized, god help us. If we could get Chicago to secede and become the 51st state, Illinois would be the best state in the Union.
‘Well, Grant did love an under-three-minute trotter, but when he got busted he was up front and honest about it.
A D.C. cop once pulled him over then was covered with confusion when he realized who he’d stopped. “Officer, do your duty,” said Grant. He always paid the piper for his dancing. And he was a brave man, refusing narcotics for pain from his throat cancer so he could finish his autobiography to support his family.
Full disclosure: I’m as southern as they come, but my cousin Julia Dent married U.S. Grant. She must have seen something in him.’
You are absolutely correct on all counts in this post.
Just as Alaska should be able to leave the Union so they can drill for their oil, the south wanted to be able to ship their raw goods overseas without over taxation forced on them by people outside their states.
I am just waiting for the huge city states of our nation to force the midwest to supply them free chickens, cattle and grain. It is coming. They are the majority.
Well said. I agree totally. And OUTSIDE AGITATERS should mind their own business. Not that they are going to do this, but I just thought I would mention....
Kansas didn't exist then, and neither did Vicksburg. I was referring to the Revolution.
“I’ll take the Confederate flag any day of the week over the Mexican flags almost everywhere I turn!!!”
I agree!!!!!
