Lebanon - Lebanese Troops Kill Well-known Militant during House Raid

Lebanese troops killed a militant from the extremist Fatah al-Islam during a house raid in the northern port city of Tripoli, police said.

They said Bilal Drakish, also known as Abu Jandal, was shot dead on Wednesday as he prepared to throw a grenade at a unit of security forces raiding an apartment in Tripoli's northern neighborhood of Tibanneh.

Police said the security forces had been pursuing Drakish who tried to throw a hand grenade at them but was fatally shot before he could trigger it.

State-run National News Agency said two passers-by were wounded in the exchange and were taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident came a day after another Fatah al-Islam militant -- wearing a suicide belt -- blew himself up in an apartment in Tripoli as security forces closed in on him. No one else was killed in the event Tuesday, which was the first case of a suicide bomber directly confronting security forces in Lebanon.

On Sunday, a residential compound on the city's Mitein Street was the scene of some of the heaviest fighting between troops and Fatah al-Islam.

Lebanese troops have been fighting members of the al-Qaida-inspired Fatah al-Islam in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared on the outskirts of Tripoli. More than 50 people have been killed in the battles.(AP-Naharnet)

This is another “good news” story. I get the impression the Lebanese Army knows how to deal with al Qaeda.

Where the Lebanese Army has an advantage over the U.S. Army is that the Lebanese Army seems to have realistic rules of engagement and is not currently hamstrung by their own politicians.

The "rules" are different when your fighting on your own soil.......

The "rules" are different simply because of the current crop of politicians.

November - December 1864 ..... Sherman's March to the Sea ....... (During war on our "own soil" that was won)

February - July 1945 ..... Tokyo Fire Raids ....... (During war on enemy soil that was won)

August 2004 ..... Fighting halts for talks with al-Sadr's people ......... U.S. forces abruptly ceased offensive operations here against Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's militia on Friday to allow peace talks between representatives of Iraq's interim government and people close to al-Sadr, U.S. and Iraqi officials said......As the crisis has escalated, though, both sides have been pushed toward a settlement, despite concerns among U.S. military officials that any negotiated end to the hostilities that allowed al-Sadr to retain his militia could pose a serious threat to the interim government. ....... (During war on enemy soil that has been declared "lost" by the leader of the Democratic majority in the US Congress)

Your optimism, unfortunately, may be premature. We still don't really know who has the upper hand in the fighting. The story is from a publication that is probably pro-Lebanese army, so we don't know anything about what casualties the army has suffered in the fighting.

Too bad they give their tacit approval by inaction to Hizballah to do the same things these bozos do.

Great that AQ is dying in some numbers, but I am not ready to cheer the Lebanese govt yet.

It sounds like this is a relatively small force, and they’ve actually killed more of the Lebanese soldiers than vice versa. Still, they sound determined to route al Qaeda and to get their revenge.
