The price of rejecting immigration reform 2007
Free Republic | may 22, 2007 | jpsb

As one totally opposed to anything other than closing the border to illegal flows (people drugs, weapons, etc) and rewriting the insane LBJ immigration policies codified in 1965. It is incumbent on me to think about the almost certain result that doing so would incur.

Without the social safety value of migrating north, poor Mexicans would surely cause much trouble for the Mexican government. Perhaps even instituting a USA hostel Marxist Mexican government. Energy exports to the USA cut, trade cut, maybe even little border wars.

This is most likely the price to be payed for cutting off the Mexican safety value, I am willing to pay it, but all opposing comprehensive immigration reform should be aware that there will be a price and it could be a high one.

I understand the “Save Mexico” ploy, but Mexico also has a responsibility in that endeavour. America cannot continue being a welfare institution for the world’s failed governments.

Besides, from the numbers of Mexicans who’ve chosen to leave, it would appear they’ve given up on the failed policies also - so why should we “support” it?

Well I am just letting y'all know that when the debate gets serious and it’s close, the “we need to save Mexico to secure North America from marxism” card will be played. Best to prepare the counter argument in advance.

I agree, we need to save Mexico from marxism. Let's bring our NATO troops home from Europe and station them in Mexico. Just to make "extra sure", let's station some of them in Venezuela as well and send Hugo on a much-needed permanent vacation...

Why can’t we try to elect better people to work in Washington before we attempt to do something this dangerous? We have some dispicable leaders behind this sloppily crafted and unfair bill.

Yep. Sometimes the most humane thing for an ailing, terminal animal is a swift blade to the jugular.

Mexico’s “government” is an ailing animal, stealing anything of value from its citizens and destroying their lives.

It’s best we “help” the people of Mexico face their challenge to fix it. They can’t or won’t do that while they’re here.

I don't mind having the safety valve as long as everyone who comes here comes here under legal channels and their children are not made automatic citizens. I welcome temporary workers, however I do not welcome invaders. Invaders should be returned to their homelands and we should allow as many LEGAL workers to come here as are clearly needed to fill jobs that do not displace American workers.

I am in favor of a policy where people are allowed to come here to work, but they should have limited visas and if they overstay their visas or if they commit a crime, they should never be allowed to return to the United States under any circumstances.

“...maybe even little border wars...”

You’re kidding right? If no one has noticed, I can assure you we’re already at war with Mexico. Go to the border...it’s become a garbage dump for Texans living there. Google for the pics... there is now a sea of garbage piled up along some of the most beautiful stretches of Texas, Rancher’s fences are cut, Mexican cattle with Brucellosis come through and infect the cattle there since Mexico has no brucellossis control program, (in humans, it’s called undulant fever-—not something one want’s to be infected with), and to that one can add: the poorest of the poor carrying drug resistant TB, Hepititis, and even Hansen’s Disease (that’s Leprosy), two years ago the state of Maryland only had 400 cases of it, today: 4,000, a disease largely wiped out in the US.), scores of our hospitals have closed on the border with Texans having to drive hundreds of miles to hospitals in San Antonio (many of them elderly and paying over three dollars a gallon for gas) MS 13 gangs running amouk in Dallas, Texas as they deal drugs. (Google the homicide rates there) Half of all babies born in Texas last year were to illegals and we paid for each and every one to the tune of 7,000 dollars each, anchor babies born to illegals who are now eligible for welfare, food stamps, and Section Eight housing, even it their mothers are not!

Our middle class is being destroyed here with illegals driving down wages for ordinary working people. If this isn’t “war” on us what the hell is???

So, our choice is to lose our country to Mexican sovereignty and lose our freedoms or have a Commmie neighbor to the south. I don’t think so. And even if it is, I’d risk the Commies taking over and then squash them like a bug.

"So, our choice is "

Supporters of open borders will present the choices as such. Most likely our best argument, one that will seriously piss off the Mexican government, is that Mexicans need to go home and fix their country, not bring us the same problems here that they have there.

I've said for years that closing the safety valve would probably cause a small revolution of the Mexican government.  It's highly unlikely that revolution would result in a government hostile to the US:  it would be too dependent on us for trade and commerce.

The simple fact is that our open border policy is doing more of a disservice to Mexico than anything else....we're absorbing a lot of their best and most motivated workers.  We're actually draining their country of their workforce, leaving behind a lot of their worst people.

In the end it doesn't matter:  selling out the rule of law for political expediency would do infinitely more damage to the US than closing the valve would do to Mexico.  Mexico is at the bottom....they can only go up.  Selling out would just drag a down.

That is absurd! Mexico has a very long coastline. Illegal aliens worldwide will come ashore in Mexico and waltz into America. We need a wall/fence on the Mexican border

Better Mexico become socialist than the US!

Too late for both countries. The U.S. is already Socialist but Mexico is actually more Marxist.

True, but globalists do care about illegal immigrates, armies they care about and the US Navy can stop amries at sea.

So now you think the US Navy will patrol the Mexican coast for illegal aliens?

Most day workers are here for the bucks not to assimalate into our society. Some are here to retake what they (wrongly) think is thier land.

I've seen articles saying that Mexico schools actually teach the kids that the US took their land. I guess they haven't understood that wars have consequences.

Another thing that is causing this illegal immigration is that the Mexican economy is broken. The corrupt government is not interested in boosting their economy, so they are destroying ours.

“thoughts, comments?”
Sure.

Bullies are by nature cowards.
Cowards yield when confronted.
Bullies should be confronted, not placated.

Former president Carter is a loud-mouthed bully.
President Bush confronted him.
He apologized.

The Mexican government is aiding the invasion of our country by its citizens.
The invasion of one country by another is an act of war.

The next law passed by our Senate, then signed by President Bush, will be to change the last word in our national anthem from “brave” to “prudent”.

“If people want to come here, and become citizens, fine.”

Right, but we don’t need 1.2 million LEGAL immigrants a year from mostly destitute, third-world countries that go on welfare as soon as they get here. We need to cut the number back to around 250,000 and only take those who can really contribute not those who want to cash in on the first world welfare system. We don’t need millions of people admitted for airy-fairy “cultural” considerations or because they’re gay or have six toes. We need to stop it now. Maybe we could move a few thousand of the next horde of arrivals to the Kennedy compound?

"...The U.S. is already Socialist..."

Not as Socialist as Kennedy, Clinton & Company want it to be... and importing a leftist voting proletarian can do the trick for them.
