MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed three German soldiers and four civilians on Saturday in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz, Afghan security officials said.
To the south, militants in Kapisa province engaged Afghan and foreign forces overnight in a battle in which several dozen Taliban fighters were believed to have been killed, the U.S.-led coalition said.
And in the Shinwar district near Jalalabad, a remote-controlled bomb killed a police chief and another officer and wounded three others on Saturday, a local official said.
Insurgents have stepped up attacks in Afghanistan in recent weeks following the traditional winter lull. The Taliban has said it has trained hundreds of suicide bombers to carry out the attacks.
In the city of Kunduz, the suicide bomber struck when the German soldiers were patrolling on foot and in a vehicle.
"Suddenly we heard a big sound. We were frightened," said Aziz, a shopkeeper. "We saw very thick smoke and people rushing to escape."
In addition to the seven killed in the blast, 14 people, including two German soldiers, were wounded, according to local security officials who blamed the attack on the Taliban.
On Thursday, roadside explosions killed 11 Afghan police officers and the nation's information minister was wounded in a suicide bombing.
The attacks follow the death of the insurgents' top operational commander, Mullah Dadullah, in a U.S.-led coalition raid last weekend. His death was considered the biggest blow to the Taliban since they were driven from power in 2001.
In Kapisa province, northeast of Kabul, militants ambushed and tried to trap Afghan and coalition forces before midnight Friday in the al-Asay valley, a coalition spokesman said.
"Coalition air strikes were called in. Several dozen enemy fighters were believed to have been killed," Major Chris Belcher, a coalition spokesman, said.
War and fighting is simply a part of this region - It is a way of life....that is going to take a decade or more to change (but even then it won't be violence free....some (msm) are trying to make that the goal-posts....Well look around here in the States. We had 19,000 murders last year alone).
Reality is the Taliban have seen three of their top leadership killed in the last 6 months...after being on the run for more then 5 years. All the momentum in Stan is on our side....virtually all the progress is on our side.....Yet the MSM would dare not suggest such (until a DEM was in office, that is).
these wars could be ended in a week if we would just recognize the enemy and destroy most of it
but that takes more than most PC’d leaders are willing to do
Maybe the taliban should be investigated for unnecessary civilian deaths like our Marines are.
I don´t think that dropping big bombs would be the right thing to do. That would send the wrong signals to the civilian population - we want to win their hearts and minds, in order so they stop hating us. Dropping bombs didn´t help in Germany or Japan - handing out candy to the kids and care packages to the people did. Oh, I´m distracting. WW2 is way too different to be compared with the war on terrorism, let alone the cultural differences.
In the meanwhile: The Gouvernor of the Province said that he has informations that other suicide bombers are ready to fulfill their bloody "duty". And, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
WOW! That should be enough for the Euro-surrender monkeys to pack up and leave. Cant have ANY casualties in the WOT. After all it is our fault. lol
“Dropping bombs didn´t help in Germany or Japan ..”
remember Hiroshima?
Germany already suffered 18 deads in Afghanistan excluding today´s attacks. German Special forces are in the country since October 2001, and I don´t think that your term “surrender monkeys” really meets the language we should use when referring to our allies.
May God bless the NATO soldiers defending our freedom worldwide!
I do, and Japan does probably, too. But I don´t think that Dresden or Hiroshima are the reasons why Japan and Germany are America´s allies today.
You have to destroy the nest.
We have to resign ourselves to a full two generations of combat to defeat these scum, at least. I won’t be surprised if this war lasts all this century. AND, we need to be prepared to do it.
Come on....The MSM tout every action our enemies do as a victory for them, as brilliant and unstoppable. No matter the realities that our enemies have suffered one strategic defeat after another since Sept 11th, 2001 (and we have not suffered one).
The MSM have moved the goal posts so low for our enemies that merely killing anything is considered an incredible success by them.
I’m sorry to hear this, Michael. Prayers for these soldiers and their families.
It is so ironic, but Afghanistan is where even our most cautious allies, such as Germany, and Americas sworn enemies, such as france and the dumbocratic party have claimed the battle should be waged. But it has only been due to the Iraq conflict that Afghanistan has been so passified to date. Be careful what you wish for. If Iraq is abandoned there will be such hell to pay in Afghanistan, the West will surely fall there.
It is indeed funny to me that still some people in the US are thinking the bombing in WWII was the reason why Germany lost the war. It was rather the Red army on the eastern front than America and its millitary that fought down nazi Germany. America played a role but the heavy lifting was done by the Russians. I am well aware that it is not political correct to say this here, but it is the plain truth.
BTW the bombing rather boosted the resistance among the German people. The demoralization America and the UK hoped for never happened.
amazing how when we (nuked)bombed that island to hell and back Japan decided they had had enough
Do you really think that nuking the whole Arabian world would be a solution in the WOT? In difference to Japan in WWII the Taliban/al Kaida/Hamas/al Fatach/GIA etc. etc. etc. do not have a combined leadership. It will be difficult to impress all those "leaders" to make them stop their terror. Some might stop, others will not. In difference to the Japanese they are not afraid of being killed. Being killed is the shortest way to heaven for them. Any nuking would give those terrorists the justification to do the same to America. I.e. to use Sarin in American towns. This would be a quite simple instrument for Arabian idiots to retaliate. The sad thing is that we know that they have such means and that there are ways to bring them to the US.
Do you really want to expose your own compatriots to the blind revenge of high end terrorists that are in a hopeless situation? Do you really want to start a genocide on all people of the middle east? Do you really want to join the club of mass murderers like Hitler and Stalin?
I would think twice before giving such statements.
But the obvious reason must have been, just as in the Europe, Not the constant, unending American victories in the every major engagement, total naval and air superiority, and technological and industrial capacity light years ahead of the rest of the world combined. It was actually because after Germany surrendered, Stalin finally declared war on Japan. SARCASM
