Governor Thompson Denounces Senate Immigration Compromise

For Immediate Release

Statement by Governor Tommy G. Thompson on Immigration Compromise in the Senate:

“Any legislation that provides amnesty to the estimated 12 million illegal aliens currently living in the United States is the wrong path for our country. You can call it anything you want, but this compromise has the look and feel of amnesty. The Senate should set this compromise aside and start by recognizing that there will be NO amnesty or benefit to anyone who broke our laws to enter this country.”

Statement by Governor Tommy G. Thompson on Overall Illegal Immigration

For Immediate Release

“As Americans, we should take great pride in the fact that our nation continues to be the land of opportunity and the place where people across the globe hope to find a better life for themselves and their families.

“We should welcome those who come here legally, and we can find ways to put that dream within the reach of even more who want to contribute to our great melting pot.

But -- we must NOT reward those who break our laws and we therefore should oppose ALL amnesty proposals. Not only that, we must enforce our immigration policies to the fullest extent of the law.

“Our country was founded by immigrants and we must continue to welcome them, but only those who follow the rules. ANY plan that rewards those who skirt our laws is shortsighted. We are a nation of laws and EVERYONE must follow those laws.”

There you have it folks. Add TOMMY Thompson to the list of proven conservative candidates for President that have come out unequivocally against the Senate amnesty plan.

So far the one ones that seem to standing strong on this are TOMMY Thompson, Duncan Hunter, and Tom Tancredo.

We can also thank Governor Mitt Romney and (the unannounced) Fred Thompson for standing up against the Senate proposal, but as Tom Tancredo said memorably in the last debate "I trust those conversions when they happen on the road to Damascus, not on the road to Des Moines." Based on their past records, they've got a long way to go to proving we can trust them on this issue.

Thanks for posting.

There are such good alternatives for our candidate than the 3 anointed ones. Tommy Thompson is one of those.

I’m leaning more to Tancredo, but its nice to have conservatives in the fight for the office!

Add Mitt Romney who said, “Any legislation that allows illegal immigrants to stay in the country indefinitely, as the new ‘Z-Visa’ does, is a form of amnesty,” Romney said in a statement on his campaign Web site. “That is unfair to the millions of people who have applied to legally immigrate to the U.S.”

I might not have agreed with the governor at times in the past, but ANYONE who is willing now to come forward against this disaster deserves our unequivocal support.

I added Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson at the end of my post as those who have also come out against amnesty, but then I added Tancredo's famous remark "But I trust those conversions when they happen on the road to Damascus, not on the road to Des Moines." Tommy Thompson's record as Governor gives us much more of a reason to trust him on this issue than Mitt Romney's record does.

That said, Romney's strong words against the Senate amnesty is a good start towards winning over the conservative vote, and they are welcomed.

Thanks for sending the post to me. This bill will probably cause McCain to lose support and cause Tommy Thommpson to gain support. Last night, on Sean Hannity’s show, I heard Rudy’s press secretary read Rudy’s statement about the bill, and it was so vague that Sean couldn’t tell whether Rudy supported or opposed the bill.

Tommy Thompson's record as Governor gives us much more of a reason to trust him on this issue than Mitt Romney's record does.

What was his record on the treatment of illegals in WI? What did he do as HHS Secretary to stem the tide and deny benefits to illegals?

Bump! Keep me ON your list, BillyBoy. (and thanks!)

Thompson hasn’t done well in the debate formats, but he did much better in the one-on-one follow-up after the last debate. I welcome ANY conservative in the race to keep the real issues up-front and center!

i have seen some horrible things in the shadows they talk about, and I have concluded that amnesty accomplishes nothing. As long as we forgive illegal entry, we will have more and more illegals underfoot engaged in every illegal enterprise we can imagine.

Certainly.

As Governor, Thompson fought the legislature to oppose in-state tuition breaks for illegal aliens and allowed the use of the state millita to enforce immigration laws on foreign fugitives that had snuck into Wisconsin.

He pushed for cutting waste from the HHS department and made it clear he felt illegal aliens should be denied any kind of taxpayer funded health care other than emergency room treatment, though Congress refused to enact that policy. On Sept. 22, 2002, the MSM attacked Thompson for ordering HHS to seek mass arrests of illegal alien parents that fled and disobeyed government orders on child care payments.

Both Tommy Thompson and John Ashcroft declined to stay on in Bush's cabinet for a 2nd term, in part because they had butted heads with him over Bush's policy of rewarding illegal aliens.
