ROMNEY'S CANDIDACY: BEYOND FACE VALUE (represents the long-lost American ideal)
NY POST ^ | May 18, 2007 | VOX POPULI

Posted on 05/18/2007 4:36:41 AM PDT by Liz

THE ISSUE: Whether Mitt Romney can become the first Mormon president. (Rich Lowry "Mauling Mitt For Mormonism," PostOpinion, May 15)

**** As a conservative, Romney is among the candidates for president I like most. The appearance of a squeaky-clean "Ozzie and Harriet" family life is no small part of his appeal. We need a leader who lives the way we should all aspire to.....the liberal media who idolize the likes of Bill Clinton do not feel the same way. Manhattan

**** Romney should be given a fair shake.....his policies and leadership qualities should be scrutinized, not his religious affiliation. That kind of bigotry should have gone by the wayside with the 1960 election of John F. Kennedy, a Roman Catholic....beyond the good looks and stylish presentation of Romney, is a highly intelligent, very driven and skillful politician. He's a caring man with a nice family. Why should he be criticized for having that? It used to be the American ideal; maybe it's time to have it again. Manhattan

Because of the atrocity of political correctness and the appalling secular humanism with its vise grip on American culture, a man such as Romney is criticized for being married to the same woman and for having a decent family life. Contrast Romney with the spectacle of Daddy Dearest Rudy Giuliani, who did not even attend his own son's high school graduation.

Rooty is a serial bridegroom, failed father, and perennial adulterer. Here's how Rooty dumped his wife and mother of his children: With his mistress waiting in the wings, then-Mayor Rudy actually called a press conference to publicly announce his separation from his second wife EXCEPT THAT HE HAD NOT BOTHERED TO TELL HIS THEN-WIFE, DONNA HANOVER, BEFOREHAND. Rudy then publicly announced to the press his separation from his wife who had no inkling she was being dumped. At that time, Rudy was taking his mistress---not his wife--- to cancer treatment sessions. He never bothered to tell his wife about his illness. Rudy then decided he could not live with his sex playmate out of his reach, and planned to bring his mistress into the Mayoral home (on the spurious claim that Hanover wasn't helping him through cancer treatments---an illness he had not even bothered to tell his wife about). Rudy publicly announced he wanted to "divide the mayoral home" in two, one side for his wife AND one side mistress---a transparent ploy to force his wife and children out into the streets. Public documents indicate Hanover was forced to go to court to declare Gracie Mansion the marital home so as to exclude Rudy's sex playmate. The judge acquiesced to Hanover's plea. Thwarted but not defeated, Rudy moved in with a happily civil unioned gay couple while his wife fended off Rudy's relentless efforts to ditch her.

On Mother's day 2000, while still married, Rudy publicly paraded his mistress up and down Second Avenue for newspaper pictures. The evilness of this marital betrayal astonished even blasé New Yorkers. Giuliani's vendetta against his wife and children was still not sated. Public documents indicate he cut the security detail to the mother of his children......but he provided government security to his mistress Judi who had no official duties (unless you consider getting Rudy sexually blitzed an "official duty".)

Romney is the American ideal---Giuliani, the American nightmare.

Duncan Hunter is better than both of them. He is conservative, he has the Ozzie and Harriett family too.

I wish we could get beyond Mitt’s image to the core of who he is. His religion happens to be one of those things, his marriage another. His politics is perhaps the most important. But answer me this, besides being taller and better looking, what does Mitt have over Hunter? Name recogition?

Whoever receives the nomination will have all the publicity and name recognition they need. Mitt’s an ‘executive,’ does that prepare him? Hunter is a proven, conservative politician. Mitt has the baggage of what some people view as an irrational belief? That is a big hurdle - like it or not.

Hunter is a stronger conservative with proven values. Mitt is a good looking, flipper. Both have children and one wife. Which one do you want?

I know his religion from the inside out. I don’t like it....but that isn’t the only reason I don’t like Mitt. He is too slick, to polished, too liberal, too perfect. He is not human enough.

Hunter is in the trenches. He is actively fighting and has served his country for his ideals. It’s time the party quit trying to appeal to the middle ground. If you think Mitt is going to reach those in the middle, you might want to rethink your position. Part of that middle ground will not vote for him because of his religion....to ignore this fact is to put our party in a place of peril.

WOW. The GOP gets to pass their Amnesty, Romney (nor anyone else can become their “Big Boy” without the Party OK), we’re supposed to vote for Romney (GOP) and supposed to say he or anyone else is the last great hope. By Nov 2008 we are supposed to forget? - Just what the GOP wants.

Bush betrayed us and so will the others - if they don’t the latest Amnesty will eliminate the need to betray us for another 20 years - and then we will be the Banana Republic of America. Once the tidal wave of illegals become “on the road” it is OVER - no hope. There will be a place called US of A but it won’t be America.

The only hope is to bring back the draft and see if these people are Americans. One “former” illegal, now a citizen, is proud of how he served. His wife showed up at the draft board with a pillow under her dress so he didn't have to be drafted. As far as I am concerned the next true Americans now are in uniform. Unfortunately, they are preserving the Political Parties’ dictatorship. Sorry for the rambling. I am besides myself with the "representatives" disregard for the people.

The GOP gets to pass their Amnesty...........

How stupid of the GOP----they are digging their own grave---amnesty means a permanent Dem majority.

Bill Clinton knows this----his campaign actually used a formula---number of aliens let in equalled so many votes.

BTW, I see Romney came out against the bill.

(Just keep saying---Anybody but Rooty.)

At a time when elected officials, Republican and Democrat, have openly betrayed the clearly expressed opinions of their constituents, perhaps now is not the time to install another "proven" politician as President regardless of his conservative record. I suggest that it is time to go "outside the box" and elect someone with proven "executive" skills - a non, life-time career politican, who knows how to get things done and knows how to take a stand when he knows he's right.

Romney WOULD be good as a candidate if he put his "religion" in the trunk of his car, and used it for his personal strength.

Religion as an image component in an election is very divisive in American politics. Unless he does that, he has no hope of becoming president.

His lifetime skills? Nah, not for me. He has an irrational belief. That points to an irrationality I don’t want in a President regardless of how much money he made by investing money for other “rich” people.

Or how he stepped into a “mess” that resulted in no criminal convictions, and was prompted by a anonymous letter placed on a reporter’s desk (Olympics). Mitt came in as a figurehead, perhaps already selected by the powers that be in Utah, to “rescue” America. I for one don’t buy it.

I don’t know if America is ready to put their trust in a slick investment officer, with a propensity to irrational thinking.

You might be able to back Romney, but the big question is, can America? I can’t. But we know what dog I have in the fight....you can, and you too have your favorite dog. But now we need to be thinking of vetting a man for POTUS. Mitt has waaayyy too much baggage IMHO to secure a win for our side.

What is more irrational: Adhering to a set of moral principles and encouraging others to do the same, however mistaken some may believe those principles to be, or devoting hours upon hours on the computer tearing down the beliefs of others based on beliefs that themselves may be in error?

Religion as an image component in an election is very divisive in American politics.

My, my---we've come a long way since the days of Bill and Hillary going to church carrying Bibles----AND campaiging in Black churches.

From what I've seen of Romney and religion, the only ones harping on his Mormonism are the ones trying to sidetrack his candidacy.

Frankly, I don't have any problem with Romney's religion. To adhere to a faith---any faith---in these secular times is noteworthy.

And Rudi McStain is for it.

Romney should run new commercials and go after both of them.

We'll see if he has the guts and political savvy to hit them where it hurts.

I’m not running for President. I get to spend irrational amounts of time on the internet pointing others in a direction that I came to understand in my teens.

Let me put it this way. I was born into a family very much like Romney. The only difference is, I found out the Joseph Smith was a fraud when I was about 12 years old. It took me years to extricate myself from my familial pressures to pretend a “faith” in something I knew to be a lie, but I did it. I still have moral principals. In fact it is my moral principals that drive me. Do you know that about 1/2 of the approximate 5,000,000 LDS members who live in the United States don’t believe the claims of Joseph Smith and in fact have left the Church. That leaves approximately 3,000,000 people in America that share his same irrational belief...whether or not that makes them “moral” is still a matter of debate. That is just 1% of the population. Many of the rest of us think he is deluded.

It took a great deal of personal fortitude for me to leave behind Mormonism. I basically had to leave everything I loved about my cultural heritage behind. BUT I did it. Can Romney not see that the claims of Mormonism are based upon a fraud? 99% of America can see it. Will they vote for a man who can’t?

Karl Marx was born in the same year as Joseph Smith. Followers of Karl Marx can be “moral” people. They too can be very successful in their financial life, and married to one spouse. Would you vote for that person?

"Will they vote for a man who can’t?"

No.

And trying to compare Romney to Kennedy, (a Catholic), is a bogus argument. The Catholic Church is not based upon fraudulent doctrine.

If we keep saying "anybody but Rooty" it will be too late and the media will have anointed Romney or some other phoney. Duncan Hunter has been in congress since 1980. He wrote the bills that are putting up the fence on the Mexican Border. He voted against NAFTA in 1993. He is a Reagan Republican who has a son who has done two tours in Iraq.

We need to get of our butts and get behind someone who is real!

Duncan Hunter in the MAN!

Well, said my friend. Duncan Hunter is the MAN!

We have to start getting good moral people to see that we can't wait for the media to pick someone. They have already shown us who they like:Rooty & Mitt.

Could not agree more....a great, great candidate. Now forgive me for asking------but why hasn't he gained traction? The only time we get to see him articulate those conservative values are 30-sec soundbites at those debate lineups (useful only for weeding out candidates). Hunter has got to show he can get his face out there......that he can finesse the hound-dog media.

Isn't there a possibility that Mitt the anointed one is an insider with some of the billions squirreled away by the church? I have heard that in a devious third party way, he has been chosen to handle their funds. Like I've always said you can be very successful with a bag full of OPM. Especially LDS funds which are endless.
