Boston, MA - Governor Mitt Romney issued the following statement on today's U.S. Senate agreement on immigration reform:
"I strongly oppose today's bill going through the Senate. It is the wrong approach. Any legislation that allows illegal immigrants to stay in the country indefinitely, as the new 'Z-Visa' does, is a form of amnesty. That is unfair to the millions of people who have applied to legally immigrate to the U.S.
"Today's Senate agreement falls short of the actions needed to both solve our country's illegal immigration problem and also strengthen our legal immigration system. Border security and a reliable employment verification system must be our first priority."
Typo: Bush might get Gonzales....
Romney isn't slick....he's just that damn good!
He would bring welcome refreshing skills to Washington.
Romney has my vote for 08!
I still have my doubts about Mitt on gun control. I may buy a Bushmaster and a bunch of 30 round mags before I vote for him, and I am intending to vote for him. :^)
>>>Whats this about strengthen our legal immigration system. What does it mean, and why is it such an urgent need that it belongs in this brief statement?<<<
The immigration issue has been a central part of Romney’s platform. A central part of his plan is to not only put barriers in front of illegal immigrants and fines upon businesses that hire them, but to also increase the number of skilled individuals (v. our current system which places little emphasis in this regard) entering our nation and expedite the process.
He’s said that our immigration system is upside down. If you’re illiterate, don’t speak English, and will be a drain on our society, you’re free to just walk across the border. However, if you’re a skilled individual who could enhance our economy, advance technology, and pay for yourself, it’s far, far too difficult to be able to come here and work in your chosen profession.
I have Romanian, Polish, and French friends with skills in IT, engineering, and architecture. All of them speak English fluently. They have had an incredibly difficult time coming here. The French girl grew tired of waiting and moved to Montreal, instead. Not her first choice, but our screwed up immigration system made it too difficult for her to come here.
I’m a fan of the idea. If foreigners come to our universities to earn advanced degrees and could contribute to our economy, why shouldn’t we let them stay? It makes no sense to force them to go home.

Contrary to popular opinion, America is not the friendliest place in the world for a skilled immigrant, especially one from Eastern/Central Europe.
I understand that it needs fixing. But Romney’s statement should have clearly focused on ILLEGALS. THAT’S the issue right now.
You’re quite right. By this, Thompson may just be trying to point out the unpopularity of this nonsense with the American people. But if so, he should have said he agrees with the sentiment that it’s “the same bill of goods,” which it more or less is.
Ping!
Bump
It's not harsh. It's the right thing to do. Good post!
You mean Mitt waited until todays vote to express his opinion?
While Mitt is not exactly a veritable Tancredo, he has been against amnesty. His position against amnesty is a prominent reason why I have been a Mitt supporter-- of the conceivably viable candidates, Romney has the best record and position.
I saw this great news on the Jim DeMint thread. DeMint has endorsed Romney === and they BOTH oppose amnesty. Go Mitt!
Good for DeMint! I’m glad there are people like him and Romney who see this sham for what it really is. Hmm, I’m starting to think a Romney/DeMint ticket would unstoppable. We need brave leadership like this. McCain should be ashamed of himself.
Mitt changes his chance to fit his agenda.
????? Explain please.
Sorry, my mistake, Mitt changes his stance depending on his agenda.I think you know what I mean.He reminds me of a used car salesman.

I thought the same way until the debates. The thing I like about him is that he communicates extremely well which we have been lacking. Thank you so much for replying back!!! Have a great weekend.
Hey Mitt, spend some money and get that opinion on the tube before it’s too late !
YES.
What is Mitt’s position on illegals? Focusing on amnesty, is only on element of this situation.
Mitt does not have the best record or position on the illegals,Duncan Hunter does.
And what did Mitt say when it was voted on by the senate last year?
