Citing a madman’s insane rationalizations in defense of a home grown kook like Ron Paul is counterproductive to your own cause, in short.

His words don’t need to be ‘spun’. He said what he said, he refused to make any corrections when given the opportunity.
Doesn’t really matter, he blew the one in a zillion chance he had going into that debate.
No, he cares about his interpretation of the Constitution, which is laughably wrong in several critical areas.
First of all, he demands a specific language for a declaration of war that is NOWHERE mandated in the Constitution itself. On the contrary, the language Congress used to authorize America's first foreign war (against the Barbary Pirates) was remarkably similar to the language used to authorize the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
He also laughably refers to "letters of marque and reprisal" -- I say "laughably" because his little, isolationist head would explode if he actually stopped to realize that such instruments carry absolutely no meaning UNLESS BACKED BY "INTERNATIONAL LAW". They are ENTIRELY dependent on foreign governments recognizing their validity.
He's a blowhard, not a Constitutional scholar.

Exactly.
Ron Paul states he "feels the pain" of Islamic terrorists/murderers - the clear implication being that we should somehow excuse these murderous acts through understanding the grievances of the Islamist fanatics.
He does indeed utilize the U. S. Constitution and particularly the 1st Amendment - all created and sustained through sacrifices of millions of U. S. service people against the forces of murderous tyranny which Ron Paul so readily, and so sadly, makes excuses for.
He and all who think like him lack the DNA for survival - though of course they think, in self-delusionment, just the opposite.

As I already posted, his ‘explanation’ isn’t valid, because of his cherry picking the time frame for his ‘explanation’.
That doesn’t make it a justification or an excuse.

What is "irrational" about not wanting to conduct nation-building exercises? George W. Bush campaigned saying he was against nation-building. Would you also accuse him of being an "irrational isolationist?"

There is a difference between “nation-building” for the sake of it and “nation-building” because we broke something that was a threat to our security.
