RIP Reverand Falwell. I met him once with a group of others. He was funny and smart and clearly a man of faith. He joined the pro life movement when it moved from an almost strictly Catholic cause and encouraged by example the involvement of all Christians. He started the Save A Baby program so women could choose adoption over abortion. He loved and served the Lord and now is with Him. Condolences to his family.

He’s home now, and my more-or-less hometown’s lost its most famous son.

I thought that was Jack Daniels.

Oh, wrong state! Nevermind!

That would be Lynchburg, Tennessee, not Lynchburg Virginia.

I am saddened by part of his legacy as well, but it may be different than yours.

(First, let me say that it’s too late to pray for his soul; the poor man is dead and his fate is sealed. But I have no doubt that he was a true believer and not a fake, so he’s just fine where he is.)

Falwall represented a large portion of Christians who preach The Gospel of Jesus Christ infused with Moralism.

Don’t get me wrong — I appreciate his unabashed preaching of the truth of the resurrection and the good news of salvation.

But by emphasizing Morality with a capital M, Falwell may have led many people to believe the Christianity is all about Being Moral. It isn’t. It’s about Being Broken by one’s sin, and confessing we cannot reach God by keeping a set of moral rules.

It’s not a matter of theology — I think his theology was probably right on the money, or close to it. It’s a matter of emphasis.

Most religions have a set of rules, or principles, or precepts, or pillars, or instructions you have to follow — something you have to “measure up to” in order to be saved/accepted by God/reach complete consciousness, etc.

The Gospel is not like that at all. The Gospel shows us what a burden these sets of rules are. It lifts that burden and places it at the cross. Then, with a light heart filled with joy for God, we actually find that our lives begin to turn around, morality wise. We begin loving the things of God more than our over-desires, and this love pushes them out of the way.

My prayers do go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. Boy, THAT is a funeral I’d like to see!

"The Gospel is not like that at all. The Gospel shows us what a burden these sets of rules are. It lifts that burden and places it at the cross."

The letters of Paul might sound that way at times, but the gospels certainly don't. I'm not much of a Bible quoter, but there are passages where Jesus makes unequivocal demands for right action, not just faith. He was very much in the prophetic tradition, and the prophets all emphasized the care of widows and orphans, right speech and conduct, etc, not faith alone.

not faith alone

Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 5:1, Acts 13:39, Romans 4:25, Galatians 3:24, and on and on state that salvation is from faith, not works. Not sure what part of that isn't clear...

CNN Debate: Jesse Jackson vs. Jerry Falwell on Terrorism

Jackson: Let's stop the killing and choose peace.

Falwell: Well, I'm all for that too - but you've got to kill the terrorists before the killing stops, and I'm for the President. Chase them down all over the world, if it takes 10 years, blow them away - in the name of the Lord.

All but one of your examples are from Paul, none are from Jesus. If I had a Bible here, I could pull some exact quotes from Jesus on the matter. Also pretty much the entire letter of James.

May the Lord bless and comfort his family in their time of grief and may that time be short as the good Reverend has gone to a peace beyond human understanding, basking in the prescence of God.

Boy, THAT is a funeral I’d like to see!

If it were any other "Reverend", we'd probably be treated to more coverage that we want. I doubt we'll see such coverage about Rev. Falwell.

Prayers of condolence for his family.

The BBC sort of trashed him. They suggested that he was a racist (Europeans--and probably other Old Worlders--seem to have extreme difficulty in separating 'race' from both culture and religion, themselves two separate things), guessing because of his stance on Islam (unless other freepers have more information?).

They even stated that Sharpton, who disagreed a lot with this guy, stated that he had cordial relations with him. If he was noticeably racist, Sharpton would probably call him on it.

It is absolutely TRUE that Tinky Winky was created as a subtle plug for homosexuals.

By the time Falwell mentioned it, it had been circulating in American Family Assoc. circles for months.

He totally lost all credibility amongst conservatives when he said that. It was a real low point in his career to say the least. Why on Earth would he bash a children’s program. I think he started going down then. He knew he screwed up big time.

It won’t be prominent (or even covered) on MSM, but it will be available on cable. I suggest somebody find out and get a thread going. It should be a doozy.
