MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.
The mock attack Thursday night was intended as a learning experience and lasted five minutes during the weeklong trip to a state park, said Scales Elementary School Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who led the trip.
"We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation," he said.
But parents of the sixth-grade students were outraged.
"The children were in that room in the dark, begging for their lives, because they thought there was someone with a gun after them," said Brandy Cole, whose son went on the trip.
Some parents said they were upset by the staff's poor judgment in light of the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech that left 33 students and professors dead, including the gunman.
During the last night of the trip, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. They were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. A teacher, disguised in a hooded sweat shirt, even pulled on locked door.
After the lights went out, about 20 kids started to cry, 11-year-old Shay Naylor said.
"I was like, 'Oh My God,' " she said. "At first I thought I was going to die. We flipped out."
Principal Catherine Stephens declined to say whether the staff members involved would face disciplinary action, but said the situation "involved poor judgment."
When you have teachers dumb as dirt no wonder our education system is going down the drain. In this case, the students had more brains than their teachers.
Depending on the size of the nuke the terrorists were able to obtain, of course. If they got a hold of a Hiroshima-sized fission bomb (around 15 KT) you'd be safe at 20 miles, but I suspect you'd see a flash of light and hear a helluva noise. But most likely they'd only be able to get something in the 1 - 3 KT range. ....or less.
YouTube has film of the 50+ MT Tsar Bomb detonation, not surprisingly.
Uhh, yeah,, I guess it did! These idiots, starting with the principle should be fired and then sued for every penny they are worth! Oh, I wonder how they would feel should some masked parents kidnap these teachers in the middle of the night, strip them naked and have a mock trial, put them up against the wall blindfolded with a mock firing squad and at the last moment,, say,, "Oh,, just kidding. We just wanted to do a drill!" Are fire drills conducted in this school by setting the hallways on fire and then screaming in panic in front of the children "We are all gonna die!" Or how about running into the classroom to a teacher in a panic and tell them their son, daughter, wife or husband just died in a car accident! Then, ten minutes later, tell them,, "Oh, this was just a drill, now lets discuss what you learned." This is pure psychological abuse! Pure and simple! These so called teachers are dangerous and were just getting off watching these kids fearing for their lives! Disgusting!
May they were practicing the Tod Beamer manuever.
Maybe they were practicing the Tod Beamer manuever.
Wow, never heard of this phenomenon of military folks becoming teachers...there might be hope for the schools after all! Thanks for sharing.
Stupid liberals gone completely and utterly mad. Every stinking one of these people need to be fired and sued!!
Amen, Sister!
How different this excercise would have ended IF ONLY ONE KID HAD A GUN!
No shit?
DO you really think so?
That knock on your front door?
That's a parent of one of those children, and he's pissed!
Thats not cruel..
It would have been funny if one of the kids was packing heat for protection against a school shooting, and mowed down the would be perps. lol
I remember back in the early ‘80s going to a liberal camp for a few weeks and one night they staged a nuclear attack. It was pretty obvious to me that it was all a hoax, but I bet some kids were scared. Does anyone remember things like this being done back then?
As far as this story, I was appalled when I read it. At the school where I teach, this would NOT happen, and simply because we are concerned about the well being of our kids. It's not Utopia, and there ARE teachers who don't have the well-being of children foremost in their minds, just as there are no perfect employees in ANY company. I have nothing against home-schooling, however I have seen bad parents attempt to homeschool and cause a child more harm than good. To scare the crap out of kids and calling it a "lesson" is ridiculous. You teach kids by discussing, showing, modeling, etc., but not by turning out lights and screaming and hollering and telling them they will die if they don't learn a lesson.
OK...I should have read the discussion first before posting the message above. I’m not the first to post something like this here. But, this wasn’t really a drill. The people in charge of this were lefties who wanted to scare us all and make us “aware” of the danger of nuclear war.
Fire!
Wow! I’m no fan of government schools...I know that the quality of education in most public schools is pathetic. But this really makes one question if they’re even sane.
Aye.
NO cheers unfortunately.
I wish it hadn't been necessary.
