Substitute Teacher Sued for Showing 'Brokeback Mountain' in Class

CHICAGO A girl and her grandparents have sued the Chicago Board of Education, alleging that a substitute teacher showed the R-rated film "Brokeback Mountain" in class.
The lawsuit claims that Jessica Turner, 12, suffered psychological distress after viewing the movie in her 8th grade class at Ashburn Community Elementary School last year.
The film, which won three Oscars, depicts two cowboys who conceal their homosexual affair.
Turner and her grandparents, Kenneth and LaVerne Richardson, are seeking around $500,000 in damages.
"It is very important to me that my children not be exposed to this," said Kenneth Richardson, Turner's guardian. "The teacher knew she was not supposed to do this."
According to the lawsuit filed Friday in Cook County Circuit Court, the video was shown without permission from the students' parents and guardians.
The lawsuit also names Ashburn Principal Jewel Diaz and a substitute teacher, referred to as "Ms. Buford."
The substitute asked a student to shut the classroom door at the West Side school, saying: "What happens in Ms. Buford's class stays in Ms. Buford's class," according to the lawsuit.
Richardson said his granddaughter was traumatized by the movie and had to undergo psychological treatment and counseling.
In 2005, Richardson complained to school administrators about reading material that he said included curse words.
"This was the last straw," he said. "I feel the lawsuit was necessary because of the warning I had already given them on the literature they were giving out to children to read. I told them it was against our faith."

This clown wasn’t a substitute teacher, the proper term would be ‘gay activist’, premediatively acquiring supervisory status over children.
The school should be sued and investigated for allowing this, the activist should be charged & sued and listed as child sex offender and ultimately jailed.
If the principal knew about it, then the school is in trouble - and rightfully so.
I don't know how things are where you live, 6ut where I live, the taxpayers fund the school system and elect the school 6oard.
Bump what you said!
Not cowboys, Goat Herders with the hat & boots.
I don’t know. I think that substitutes should be watched pretty closely. They are unfamiliar with the class and with the routine. If this teacher was able to show a 2-3 hour video to her class, she probably wasn’t being adequately supervised. As a permanent teacher, I would be questioned if my class was watching a video for that length of time.
Of course, she might have been a long term sub, which is different. Hopefully, there is no way this woman will ever be allowed inside a school again.
While I don’t like to see taxpayers getting hit for public school negligence, I think lawsuits are absolutely the correct way to go. Without them, incidents like these are swept under the rug and continue to grow into institutionalized abuse. Big lawsuits, big money, big headlines, big taxpayer pushback — at least I’d hope.
Good question - why doesn’t this qualify the sub as a sex offender? Because it highlighted the “beauty of diversity?”

Isn’t it illegal to show a R-rated movie to minors?
“The film, which won three Oscars...”
Oscars aren’t worth a hill of beans. It is about the liberal agenda, not about good (or honest) filmmaking.
But the nation of sheep are still supposed to believe that because a film won an Oscar, it SHOULD be viewed by the masses of all ages.
Nonetheless, the damage is done and now the school district (as in taxpayers) will pay for any judgements meted out by the court. Very sad all around and pretty daggone stupid too.
great post
LOL!!
You give them way too much credit.
wasn't there a case of a teacher who got fired for accidentally showing her class some adult website? I don't see any difference here, in fact it's worse because it was deliberate.

Swift justice
From the looks of their test scores, post 36, they ought to be focusing on academics and not movies.
Agreed. Time to get those kids working on some basics instead of worrying about keeping them entertained.
I've only heard about the film. I thought that the sexual-type content was actually rather mild, like PG rating material. Do you know why it had an R rating?
