NEW YORK - In a debate televised Friday night, Don Imus' former producer called the Rev. Al Sharpton a race-baiter who was looking for attention when he led a campaign to fire the radio host. Sharpton said Imus and his producer got what they deserved for making a racist, sexist remark on the air.
Bernard McGuirk and Sharpton appeared together for a combative debate on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes" show. McGuirk was fired last month for his part in an exchange on the "Imus in the Morning" program in which Imus called the members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos."
McGuirk, a 20-year producer and on-air jester for the show that originated on WFAN-AM in New York, called the team "hardcore hos" in the April 4 exchange with Imus. Sharpton held protests and lobbied both networks to fire Imus.
MSNBC took Imus' show off the air April 11 and CBS fired him from his syndicated radio program a day later.
McGuirk called Sharpton a "crude ... opportunist, a race-baiter" who campaigned against Imus to help his own career and raise his profile.
While McGuirk acknowledged that "these words did hurt these girls," he added, "until you, Reverend Al, got involved, they probably never would have heard of it. They would have probably never, quote unquote, got scarred for life until you got involved for your own self-serving interests."
Sharpton said he wasn't looking for more attention "if you have any recollection at all, I had been in the papers all year," he said. He said Imus and McGuirk may have apologized for the remark, but "forgiveness is not the point. The question is the penalty."
"Consumers have the right to say to advertisers, 'Are your standards going to be where people are attacked based on your gender and race?'" Sharpton said.
McGuirk countered that Sharpton "terrorized these spineless, thumb-sucking executives" into taking Imus off the air. In an earlier appearance on "Hannity & Colmes," he said the executives "were in a fetal position under their desks sucking their thumbs on their BlackBerrys, trying to coordinate their response."
McGuirk said Imus "made one small mistake. He ran a red light" and shouldn't have been fired.
"Who elected you the p.c. police chief?" he asked Sharpton. "Who elected you to anything?"
Imus has not spoken publicly since his dismissal, but his lawyer has said he intends to sue CBS for $120 million, and said that the network encouraged irreverent, off-color comments on the program.
bump
The DUmmies take on this was (of course) that Al “Sportin’ Life” Sharpton ripped him a new one
In this case, we have an Orangutan, which trumps a Baboon, I think.
How about this guy? Remember him?
I actually gave up on Fox over Sharpton, mainly, and the fact that Shabazz is on every night that Sharpton isn’t.
I get enraged that we all just sit here and listen to these people fire shot after shot over our bow, and no one will say squat.
Everyone—even the stalwart Bill and Fox—must get on their knees and **** the black community. You’d think blacks were 80% of the population. Bill calls Sharpton a “stand up guy” and “brilliant” every time he appears on Bill’s show.
Sharpton is a lot of things, but “brilliant” isn’t one of them.
It’s not much different from watching Cornel West on Maher’s show (one of the few times I actually watched it). The guy speaks in cliches and zingers like Rodney Dangerfield. It’s laughable.
He’s done what he needs to do to survive in this world of the wicked white man. He isn’t the problem. He’s just irrelevant. He adds nothing to any discussion going on around him because he appears unable to process what anyone else is saying—like a babbling whino reciting poetry on a streetcorner.
What’s frustrating is everyone else. Everyone sits there and pretends he’s not a moron, or worse yet, that he even makes sense.
A little bit about Fat Al...

What the metro-area papers didn’t tell you is that a jury awarded $345,000 to New York prosecutor Steven Pagones because Sharpton repeatedly defamed Pagones by participating in the rape hoax story invented by teenager Tawana Brawley, and by knowingly falsely accusing Pagones of rape.
In 1989, a young woman jogger in Central Park was viciously raped and beaten by a gang of youths. Sharpton led a mob outside the court which claimed, without a shred of evidence, that “the boyfriend did it,” and screamed that the victim was a “whore.”
At a rally in Harlem, Sharpton denounced a Jewish small business owner as a “white interloper,” and then stood by approvingly while one his associates incited the crowd to violence. Later, a listener killed seven people in the store. Sharpton then lied and claimed he had never been at the rally.
Sharpton helped incite a murderous anti-Jewish pogrom in Brooklyn when he gave a speech at a funeral of a black child who had been accidentally killed by a Jewish driver. Sharpton announced, “If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house.” He also organized a boycott of small grocery stores owned by Korean immigrants. He called New York City’s first black mayor, David Dinkins, “that n-—— whore turning tricks in City Hall.”
This lying race-huckster should never be given any time on TV. It’s disgusting to think that this creep is considered to be a spokesman for anyone.
Is that a mandrill...? Or a really fat Baboon (I mean the one on the left)...?
McGuirk was sandbagged. Hannity is a wuss.
Sharpton is Sharpton and everyone knows what that is, trying to get him to recant anything he has ever said or done is foolish and a waste of time.
He did, plenty of times.
It's an art form and a signature of his.
Like it or not, Sharpton controlled the debate from beginning to end. He’s very good at making himself seem important — and Hannity, Colmes, and McGuirk were more than happy to play along.
Of course Sharpton is a race baiter.
Thanks for linking that thread in!
Racing tonite at Darlington.. Go Clint!
I would agree it is more like a Battle of the Skunks contest depending on one’s point of view.
Such is the state of affairs that we have to keep a clothes pin handy or just change the channel. ;-)
