Weight Grade on Report Cards Angers Parents (Wyoming School District Uses BMI to Grade)
ABC News ^ | May 8, 2007 | JOHN DONVAN and KATIE HINMAN

Posted on 05/10/2007 3:00:54 PM PDT by Baladas

Four times during the school year in Campbell County, Wyo., the school sends report cards home. Anxious parents and worried students are provided with the typical grading categories -- academic performance, attendance and a work ethic score.

But here in Gillette, there's an additional grade that has some families up in arms.

It's called the body mass index, or BMI, a calculation based on height and weight that indicates whether your kid is too fat. The school chooses the word "overweight." If your child scores too high, it's the fitness equivalent of a bad grade. When Taylor Barbour came home with a BMI score of 32, seven points over the "normal range," his mother, Rosie Barbour, was none too pleased. Her anger was directed not at her 12-year-old son but at the school.

"It just doesn't have any place in the school," said Barbour. "It's fine if you want to teach them how to eat healthy, and make better choices during health class, but I don't think giving them BMI on their report card" is the answer.

'The Strong Kids Club' On top of that, the school district sent a letter in the mail inviting Taylor -- and 172 other kids with high BMI scores -- to join an exercise program three times of week. It's called the Strong Kids Club and came free to his family, with a promise that "it will be fun."

The sound you heard in the distance was Wintertime’s head exploding from my last post :)

Correct me if I am wrong here, but aren't unions prohibited from using union dues for campaigns? From your links, it looks as if congressmen/women are being bought with money from the dues of teachers. I hope they get slammed for that.

I work in a right to work state (which has it's own issues) so we cannot be forced into a union, but I feel for my fellow conservative teachers who are. There are no other options for you? You can't direct your money to a conservative union or organization?

Dr Fall has been my sons pediatrician for years. He has made alot of changes in the school district the past year or so, none of which most of the parents agree with!

I disagree that your wieght has anything to do with academics and has no business on a report card! I think mr fall may find himself without many patients soon!

It also might help if the schools actually let them have PE instead of spending half of that class doing “reading time”!

If he finds himself with fewer patients, that would just represent the market forces at work.

Having a practicing pediatrician as the chairman of the school board doesn't feel right. It just seems like it opens up too many conflicts of interest.

Anything to prevent the children from learning. It really is sickening how the public schools have taken to indoctrination not education.

” DAVID AMMONS
AP Political Writer

Gov. Chris Gregoire on Friday signed legislation allowing labor unions to spend nonmembers’ bargaining fees on political causes without first getting their permission.”

As you can see from the above paragraph, the issue in question is them using the BARGAINING fees on political causes.

The whole issue IS ABOUT the spending of non member dues.
And yes, we can direct PART of our dues to another place, but not all.
And, MY PART of the issue is that I cannot be part of my LOCAL Union without being part of the State (and ergo the NEA) Union.
And, since I LIKE my local union and HEARTILY support the officers whom I helped to elect, I swallow hard and stay IN.
Isn’t that and awful (non) choice?

The LOCAL takes 1% of my paycheck per YEAR...the state takes 1% per MONTH.
And, you cannot deduct it unless these expenditures (plus others) exceed 2% of your income.
So, I can’t even write it off.
Totally TICKS ME OFF!

So...yes, unions ARE prohibited from using union dues for campaigns.
And the union was even FINED for and ADMITTED to doing so.
Then that ruling was overturned and called “too much of an administrative burden for the union”!
WHAT?
So, I fully believe they will get slapped down by the USSC.
However, our Governor (if you read the 2nd link) has just said that it’s ok. They do not have to TELL US or ASK PERMISSION to use our $$$ for campaign purposes as long as their is enough money in the fund (which fund?) that they could be using the money of people who don’t care.
Since this just happened, I am not super familiar with how it works yet.
It could be that it is something I don’t object to.
But I will first need more info.

Isn’t it FRUSTRATING?!

“Because they want that type of group gone. Gabz has posited before that some posters here are actually NEA plants who go on the most ridiculous rants just to make homeschoolers look bad. I don’t know if that is true or not, and at first I ‘pooh-poohed’ the idea, but now I’m starting to come around to her side. Some things are just way, WAY too bizarre to be the product of a rational mind and a deep believer in homeschooling. When someone compares sending a child to a public school to the equivalent of feeding them poison, woah, that’s out there. But who knows who is on the other side of the screen? I figure I have to account for me and what goes on in my class, other people are in charge of themselves.

I have nothing bad to say about parents who homeschool or choose another way of education. Competition is good - all it does is make our society and future generations stronger as we all adapt to the complicated populace we serve.”

It gets sadder by the moment!
That means that I could be PAYING the person on “the other side of the screen” to argue with me!

HELP!

One of the reason (a few others too) I don’t homeschool is that I have absolutely no patients and would probably do more damage than not.

Bless you - you understand my biggest reason for not homeschooling. My husband would be far better suited to it than I am, but I do supervise the homework.

Gabz has posited before that some posters here are actually NEA plants who go on the most ridiculous rants just to make homeschoolers look bad.

I can't deny doing that, and the main poster I have stated that about, and directly to, on numerous occassions, is wintertime. To my knowlege she has never refuted my claim, then of course she has a penchant to not bother directly addressing anything another poster says if that poster does not march in lockstep with her position.

I have nothing bad to say about parents who homeschool or choose another way of education.

No argument here from me. With a few exceptions to the rule, the VAST majority of parents are extremely rational about the choices they and others make in regard to the "formal" part of the education of their children.

Maybe where you live, but not where I live. ALL of the elementary schools have recess here, and some days it is twice and there is nothing on their report cards about weight.

I agree with you that where it is being done they are hypocrites.

Good thing I am not in a district where there are no recesses!
My son would EXPLODE!
LOL!!!

We have 2 a day, and 2 PE per week as well.
I am SURE they could use more but to have none would be so ridiculous.

None of the districts around here have cut recess!
GOOD THING!

Sadly, yes, you could be paying for the campaign of someone who is diametrically opposed to everything you believe in. Unions are destroying this country one industry at a time. Once they get through with the automobile industry, there will be nothing left

Gabz, I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure recess is mandated by the state board of education in Virginia. It’s a good thing too as these little guys need a break to run and play outside during the day. What’s bad is inside recess! Woah - rainy day and 20 cooped up kiddos is a pretty ugly scenario!

No, you get no prize, because wintertime refuses to acknowlege the experiences and observations of others that run counter to her experiences and observations

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is a strawman. What am I supposed to do? Am I to defend an argument of your own creation?

I have **consistently** stated that I **personally** have never met a fat homeschooler who has been homeschooled from the beginning. If others have met a fat homeschooler ( that has been homeschooled exclusively) then I believe you.

I still conclude that they must be rare since I **personally** have never met one.

. If someone on this thread went by height and weight they might say obese, but the doctor said he was normal for his body type.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If the doctor says he is normal for his body type then he is NOT fat. He must fall into the category of the non-fat homeschoolers that I have been describing.

Now it is likely that fat homeschoolers exist. Your son is not one of them. The doctor has told you so. If fat children who have been exclusively homeschooled exist, then I have not met them.

I have. Do I get a prize?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I haven’t offered a prize.

I have merely stated that I **personally** have not met a fat homeschooler who has been exclusively homeschooled. I conclude they must be rare.

I can look at any school bus stop, where children are waiting like day laborers, and concluded that institutionalized children are NOT at all rare.

How do they justify this I wonder?”

Won’t be long, the school will have a judge ORDER the kid to a
weight loss boot camp. It will be out by the Overdue Library Book Correctional Center.

institutionalized children

Why must you use this title? They go to school to learn and receive and education. Most of the children turn out fine. Every now and again you find some that are not great whether it be they are fat, criminal, uneducated, etc. The problem is that here at FR we receive a huge amount of negative articles about public schools and hardly any if any good news. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?? The liberals try to do this with the war...all bad news all the time, everyday. Again my kids don’t go to public school, BUT I know many who are thriving at public schools and making a great difference to this world and will continue to.
