Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in response to President Bush’s remarks on the war in Iraq, in which he said he would accept benchmarks:
“The President has long said he supports benchmarks; what he fails to accept is accountability for failing to meet those benchmarks. Benchmarks without consequences and enforcement are meaningless, a blank check. The American people, retired military commanders, and a growing bipartisan majority in both the House and the Senate reject giving President Bush a blank check to pursue the war in Iraq.
“The President has failed to properly budget for the war and vetoed the Iraq Accountability Act, which provided more money for the troops than the President requested. This week, he threatened to veto the current bill, which would fully fund our troops, honor our commitment to our veterans, and hold the Iraqi government accountable. Vetoing one Iraq accountability bill and threatening to veto another is not the kind of cooperation the American people voted for last November.”

She’s absolutely right. Benchmarks without consequences and enforcement ARE meaningless. But benchmarks with unreachable goals or arbitrary dates and that have no other purpose other than to fail are meaningless as well.
So are non-binding resolutions....Get over it Pelousy, GWB is not going to surrender.

The only retired military that is complaining are those that did Clinton’s bidding for him. They were politicians and couldn’t run the war. That’s why they retired during the conflict.
That would be part of why the Pres rejected the idea.

We need a fully resourced WOT supporting 527 to be calling the DEM leadership out on such...
The reality is the WH has given up any PR authority on this WOT....simply because for 3 years they failed to respond! - Now that option is gone with large segments of the public - The WH can't get a message out on the WOT - It will take a 3rd party option via a WOT 527...
What the WH and RNC need to do is have the powers that be (behind the scenes) get a WOT supporting 527 up and running - Touting our successes, touting WHY we are in this fight and WHY we must stay on the offensive....While at the same time showing the DEM leadership (and the MSM) for who they really are.
A creative, informative bi-weekly Ad campaign could turn public opinion (and have the DEMs on the run) in a relatively short time frame.
It is shameful that this WOT supporting 527 does not exist yet. The powers that be in the RNC are the one's who have to see it launched....(after that the grass-roots will help with funding)....This is what the DEMs have done with their wacko 527 groups...(going on 4 years ago now!!).
