A revival, led by father and son (Duke Lacrosse)

DURHAM, N.C. -- Well after their season was shattered, their veteran coach was forced from his job and their faces were plastered all over incessant cable talk shows, the Duke lacrosse team tried to consider its future.

Would they be back on the field in 2007? Could they overcome a rape investigation-turned-witch hunt into a crime they knew never occurred? Would things ever revert to the relative anonymity they had enjoyed?

And who could possibly lead them if the program were ever reinstated?

The last one was easy. Players' thoughts easily meandered to the father of one of their own, a man with more than two decades of Division I coaching experience and a far more intimate knowledge of the crucible he would face than any other potential candidate.

I still hope the former coach bankrupts the school.

I don’t know if the former coach has any legal basis for suing the school. If I remember correctly, he wasn’t fired . . . he resigned on his own.

I wonder whether any boys were at Duke on a LaCrosse scholarship. If so, what happened to them financially?

Weird season as well. For example, Cornell went undefeated and was ranked # 1 the last sevewral weeks of the season and beat Duke in the one head to head game. However, Duke got seeded # 1 in the NCAA tournament that is just about to start. I almost wonder if that was a sympathy seeding for Duke??

Anyone have closer knowledge of this question??

I think we’re going to see the answer to that one in about a month...

Duke is #1 in Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) and Quality Wins, vs. #2 and #6 respectively, for Cornell. Similarly, Duke was a combined 8-2 against the 15 other teams in the tournament field. Nobody else played even half that number of games against such competition.

Cornell definitely has a right to feel snubbed; however, as twisted as it may seem, Cornell also received the most favorable path to the “final four” based on the remainder of the bracket seedings.

In any case, you have to win to advance. With both teams winning their opening round games on their respective home fields, Duke/Cornell is a likely third round (national semifinal) matchup in Baltimore.
