TORONTO -- There is an untold story of the war in Iraq -- a story about soldiers who have gone to Canada to avoid going back to Iraq.
Many people think about the Vietnam War draft dodgers when they hear about people heading to Canada to avoid military service, but the soldiers in the Persian Gulf War and the Iraq War are part of an all-volunteer force.
"I signed up before the invasion of Iraq," Corey Glass said in his Toronto apartment. "I joined the National Guard thinking it was a humanitarian organization."
Glass is an Army National Guardsman from Indiana. He said he joined to help people and never expected to end up in Iraq, in Military Intelligence. Glass said his job gave his conscience pause; he filed casualty reports for Army brass.
"I went to Iraq because I was ordered to, like I did what they told me to do, but I started feeling way too wrong about it," Glass told 12 News' Investigative Reporter Colleen Henry. "I could talk to certain people, but I couldn't dig too deep to find out some things, like changes from like civilians being like, killed, to like, so now they're insurgents. How does that change?"
Glass now sits chain-smoking in a Toronto, Canada apartment with other American servicemen who've walked away from war, their way of life and their world.

Please send me a FReepmail to get on or off this Canada ping list.
I’ve never been in the military, and I doubt that I would be well-suited to it. I’m also not too sure that I would care to go to Iraq or Afghanistan, personally. Having said that, if I had joined the military, I’d be damned if I’d run away and hide in another country to avoid what I was being ordered to do, even if I didn’t agree with it. These guys are worse than cowards - they’re weasels. I wouldn’t trust a word that comes out of the mouth of a man who voluntarily joins the military and then refuses to do his duty.
WOW! typo after typo in that article. The newspaper should be ashamed!
Now that I have gotten that out of the way, I am wondering, did the first loser join the military as MI, or was he just assigned to an MI unit?
By last little nit to pick...that loser...it’s like one thing for a 16 yr old girl to say “like” like every other word in a like, sentence. Totally!
“I could talk to certain people, but I couldn’t dig too deep to find out some things, like changes from like civilians being like, killed, to like, so now they’re insurgents.”
It doesn’t say like how old this guy is, but from his picture, he doesn’t appear to be a like, 16 yr old girl. And I am now like totally removing the word like from my vocabulary for like the rest of the day, dude! He must have been like channeling his inner valley girl. DUDE!

These guys are the equivalent of welfare queens. They signed up for a free lunch and the perks and ran the other way when they were told to do their job. Like, work, man?—no way!
Yeah, I’m no better than the newspaper. Well, a little...I did at least spell check. Does not help if the word is spelled correctly, but the wrong word though! :P By=My
This article does not even mention the response of the Refugee Boards and the Federal Court until near the end of the story and even then it downplays the fact that Jeffry House has been losing at every stage of every proceeding.
It does not mention at all that the Crown is actively and vigorously opposing these deserters' applications.
Most people do not read stories in depth, usually reading only the first few paragraphs to get what they think are the main points. For those persons, Canada will be falseley seen as a safe haven for deserters.
They should replace cowards with deserve to be shot!
Feel free to make our deserters play Goalie without any protective equipment.
Bumping at 63%
I have this horrible feeling that my country’s average intelligence took a 10% hit when this guy got here.
Just a dumb thought, they have Army training, let these P****s service in Afghanistan.
Naw, our brave Canadian friends would not want them there!!!
First, I’m sorry that these..individuals..selected Canada as a refuge. Everybody has to go someplace, I suppose, and there are still enough of my generation who left the US for Canada and stayed that this crap is becoming habitual.
Once that’s said...
The most probable (and appropriate) treatment that these deserters will get is:
1) Check them in to a US military facility to make sure of their identity.
2) Check them right back out with Dishonorable Discharge in hand, and unsaid but explicit directions to take themselves to the nearest available sh**can.
I wouldn’t care to have any of these POS within the same time zone as any of my children who are serving with honor in the military for any longer than absolutely required.
They don’t deserve membership in a country or a community. They are too dim and self-absorbed to function as anything other than users of all those about them.
