U.S. proposal to allow chicken imports from China raises health concerns

WASHINGTON: In China, some farmers try to maximize the output from their small plots by flooding produce with unapproved pesticides, pumping livestock with antibiotics banned in other countries and using human feces as fertilizer to increase soil productivity.

But the questionable practices do not end there: Chicken pens are frequently suspended over ponds where seafood is raised, recycling chicken waste as a food source for seafood, according to a leading food safety expert who served as adviser to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Suspect Chinese agricultural practices could soon affect consumers in the United States. Government authorities are working on a proposal to allow chickens raised, slaughtered, and cooked in China to be sold in the United States, and under current regulations, store labels do not have to indicate the origin of the poultry.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, China's top agricultural export goal is opening the U.S. market to its cooked chickens.

I’m in total agreement with you.

But when I look out my window and know that less than 1/10th of a mile from my front door there are 170,000 chickens, the idea of importing chicken from China is absolutely mind boggling.......and that is only 5 chicken houses, there are 350 of them in this county alone.

I see chicken breasts and wings being imported from China. Both are cheaper there than stateside (1/3 the price). Chicken legs are more expensive in China. One problem I see with chicken imports is that Chinese chickens are much tougher. Especially the breasts. Maybe it’ll be used as raw materials for chicken nuggets.

Avian influenza virus is eradicated by proper cooking, but there are leagues of other contaminants (especially chemicals) that aren’t.

But now that I see the proposal includes “cooking in China” I’m concerned about that, too.

It’s a Happy Mother’s Day present - yea that’s it. What makes a mom more happy than preparing a lovely meal of toxic chicken for her beloved family.

I'm cooking meatloaf on Mother's day!!!! It's what I want.

All kidding aside, I'm lucky, I know where my chicken comes from, and we eat a fair amount of it in our house........there t'ain't gonna be no chinkie chckie in my kitchie :)

I’d rather eat a sh*t sandwhich.

You can get anything you want, from China’s excrement.

Again, why in the world would we import ANY sort of chicken products from China??

No idea. I never knowingly buy any food produced in China. Chinese are uncivilized primitive savages who eat their own feces and cannot be trusted to produce safe food. Beyond that, I have good Amish and other homegrown farms nearby and fresh meat if I want it.

Some freepers sneer at the idea of buying locally, but for me and my family it means food from people we know personally and trust. Screw the chicoms.

Some freepers sneer at private property rights, so what do you expect?

Sneering at buying locally is assinine. I WANT people to buy locally - I've got a heck of a lot of produce growing that I want people to stop and buy as they pass by my house.

I've traveled the Chinese countryside.I've seen the filth.I've seen the filth in Chinese rice paddies

Figured that one out after listening to some Nam vets --told me about waiting out a firefight chin-deep in a rice paddie...for distraction they amused themselves by blowing a human turd back and forth between their faces.
