Giuliani Plans to Publicly Embrace Abortion Rights [Rudy declares war on conservatism]
New York Times ^ | May 10, 2007 | By ADAM NAGOURNEY and MARC SANTORA

Posted on 05/09/2007 7:17:06 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

After months of giving ambiguous signals on abortion, Rudolph W. Giuliani is planning to offer a forthright affirmation of his support for abortion rights in public forums, television appearances and interviews in the coming days, despite potential consequences among some conservative voters already wary of his views, aides said yesterday.

At the same time, Mr. Giuliani’s campaign — seeking to accomplish the unusual task of persuading the Republican Party to nominate an abortion rights supporter as its presidential candidate — is eyeing a path to the nomination that would try to de-emphasize the early states in which abortion opponents wield a great deal of influence. Instead they would focus on the so-called mega-primary of Feb. 5, in which voters in states like California, New York and New Jersey are likely to be more receptive to Mr. Giuliani’s social views than voters in states like Iowa and South Carolina. They said that approach became more appealing after Florida, another state they said would be receptive to Mr. Giuliani, voted last week to move its primary forward to the end of January.

The shift in emphasis by Mr. Giuliani comes as his campaign has struggled to deal with the fallout from the first Republican presidential candidate debate in which he gave a halting and apparently contradictory responses to questions about his support for abortion rights. Mr. Giuliani’s aides were concerned both because it opened him up to a new round of criticism from abortion critics — who have never been happy with the prospect of a Republican presidential candidate who supports abortion rights — while threatening to undercut his image as a tough-talking iconoclast who does not equivocate on tough issues.

I think a certain beautiful, blonde conservative female commentator took him to task for ignoring Duncan Hunter as well.

What other developed Western democracies, other than Ireland, Poland and Spain ban abortion? It’s even legal in Italy. Interestingly, it’s illegal in Germany, but there is zero enforcement.

Nevermind, of course, there are states in the past year that have passed legislation -- either to challenge Roe or in the event Roe is overturned -- that would ban abortion for convenience. Or that multiple polls show that majority in this country favoring a ban on abortion except in the cases of rape, incest and the mother's life being endangered. At the very least, most states would pass greater restrictions on abortion if Roe was overturned.

Such laws if passed would significantly reduce the number of abortions. Eliminate easy access to abortion and the number of abortions would drop.

Most importantly, overturning Roe would return the power to the power and take it out of the hands of dictatorial judges, restoring the power to decide such issues to the people and their elected representatives.

You're the one not dealing in reality and willingly to let judges alter the Constitution and undermine our democrat form of government.

He thinks he can win the nomination without pro-lifers.

He has already told those who support the 2nd Amendment to bug off. That is all I need to vote elsewhere in the general election if primary GOP voters nominate that socialist.

Read your history book. The answer is simple: the ban is enforced against providers, just like it always was up until the 1970's (a little earlier in a couple states).

The business about women being prosecuted is a strawman.

Coat hangers? That's their choice - a stupid one, to be sure. But one thing is certain: along with the ban we need to change the culture, the way sex is portrayed. Eliminating the ability to rid oneself of the consequences of one's action by eliminating an innocent life gives a good start.

Your "reality" is a fantasy world devoid of any but the young, the perfect, and the selfish. No down syndrome folks, no muscular dystrophy folks, no spina biffida folks, only a perfectly bred archetype. A eugenicist's dreamworld. Who among us would be deemed unfit, as we cannot protect even the weakest and most vulnerable?

If we're fighting this WOT to defend a nation that cannot defend its weakest and most innocent, that shows a proclivity toward redefinition of historic word meanings, whose courts seek removal of the Deity Who has so graciously blessed her... What on earth are we fighting for?

YES! We need to be asking this. Pro-choice: what, exactly, is the choice?

The ruthlessness of Rooty and his handlers/backers/campaign contributors ----power-tripping on the backs of the unborn----is astounding.

The raw thirst for power is unprecedented.

Keep in mind the goal here----the Repub Party takeover would have liberals controlling all facets of the US government. This poses a distinct threat to the republic----it would decimate the system of checks and balances the Founders wrote into our system of government.

ACTION NOW Conservatives in primary states are on high alert. Notify your state's Attorney General of any suspicious activity.

Among the schemes these ruthless liberals will deploy to get Rooty the nom: Look for voter fraud. Look for fraudulently registered new voters. Look for ringers bussed into primary states to rig the vote for Rooty.

More later.

Good. Now that he’s out in the open we can get rid of him and the Log Cabin RINOs who support him.

Don't forget, there's never just one sith lord. What abortion is to Rudy, homosexuality is to Romney.

I’ve said before that Rudy has only about a 10% chance of getting the party’s nomination.

That was based upon him repudiating his pro-abortion stance.

30% of the county and 60% of the Republicans are pro-life. 80% of primary voters are pro-life. Mathematically, he can’t get the nomination as a pro-abort.

If he indeed takes this stand (remember, this is the NY Times), he’ toast. 0% chance of nomination.

Something the pro-aborts don’t realize is that this issue is life and death to those of us in the pro-life group. There is no compromise on this and there will never be an end to this war until abortion is gone from this country like slavery.

Giuliani is a flawed candidate for a number of reasons. Abortion is not a "single issue" at all . . . His attitude towards abortion is indicative of his disregard for Constitutional law in other areas, too (e.g., his well-documented hostility towards the Second Amendment and his administration's disgraceful violation of the Fourth Amendment).

However if I had to chose one single issue that will determine who I will vote for come Nov. ‘08 it is national security. Guiliani is the ‘only’ person in the race at this moment who I would trust with my whole being when it comes to this issue.

You're certainly free to take that position, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to come up with even one objective reason why Giuliani is any better than any other GOP candidate in this regard.

Even if you are a single issue voter on national security, throwing your support behind the mayor of a sanctuary city who supports open border policies, gun control, and has no military experience is hardly a way to ensure that the nation stays secure.

Instead, you'd be better served supporting Duncan Hunter, former chair of the armed services committee, a Vietnam veteran himself, with a son who served in Iraq.

2 blue swing states, Wisconsin and Michigan, Rooty polls 3rd in both and its too early for most to know his real views on the issues. What is getting out is the anti-gun part and that wont sell here.

Michigan may look like a blue state on the election maps but if anyone thinks the voters share the same ideas as those in Mass or NY, NJ they are in for a rude awakening on election day.

Its over, Rooty can fold his tent and go back to NYC to play dress-up with his queer friends.

His lying didn’t work so he’s now going to try a little stiff arming. Will the pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun planks be removed from the GOP platform to accommodate Rudy?

Only if the bastard pulls it off. I think the crowd here will make sure that doesn't happen.
