Romney Addresses '07 Regent Graduates [some skeptical having a Mormon address Christian audience]

CBNNews.com - Virginia Beach, Va - Before the celebrating came the turning of tassels and accepting this charge:

"I want you to strive for greatness through service," said CBN founder Pat Robertson.

The largest class in Regent's history sang a hymn bowed their heads in prayer.

"Father," prayed Pastor Jack Hayford. "We come with hearts of gratitude for each of these graduates."

{snip}

Some say they were initially skeptical about having a Mormon address a Christian audience.

"There were some people who were alarmed," said Regent graduate Cassy McLauchlin. "I was surprised because I just didn't think he was the speaker we would have here, but they let us know he wasn't coming to speak on any theological issues but he was coming to address us at graduation."

I do believe that mormonism is a cult and most mormons do not even realize the Mormon church, the book of mormon or The Bible teaches.

I agree with you whole-heartedly

Nobody has any sense of humor on this site any more.

OK, does this Quran quote say Christ is the son of God? I get bored easily when it comes to discussions of religion.

You are correct.

Mormons believe they will become gods if they are righteous enough and they will rule over a world like Christ rules over Earth.

This is not christian teaching. Men can NEVER achieve god-hood.

Mormons are severely deficient in their thinking in believing that they can become gods.

It’s probably pretty safe to say that Islam does NOT embrace the Christian understanding of the Triune God and you probably WON’T hear the Nicene Creed being recited in their houses of worship.

It was an extraordinarily eloquent Commencement speech delivered superbly by Gov. Romney. Let's take a look at excerpts from the article reflecting the audience reaction of a huge majority and the CBN reporter shall we?
One of Mitt Romney's goals for the speech was to connect with this audience. To do that, he highlighted common values - values such as family, character, sacrifice, and service.

"If there ever was a time for great Americans - great and good Americans, Americans who are willing to cross into the deep waters of life - it is now," said Romney. "You cross into the deep waters by marrying and raising good children; you cross into deep waters by serving in your church, in your community, in the military, in government or in volunteer service."

It was a message that went over well.

"I thought it was very important, you know just making a difference in the world - as he said - not swimming in the shallow water. Kind of trying to change the world in a positive way especially here at Regent where we're trying to grow Christian leaders," said Regent student Chris Frederick.

Regent parent Cal Beresh said, "He's got a strong message for values and a commitment in his own faith and certainly someone who can be a model to the young, a model to many who can look up to him."

David Brody, another CBN commentator, wrote about the speech:
"Romney's speech was spot on. Really, as I read through the text, it may be one of his better speeches. I call it his "deeper waters" speech. Listen to some of this eloquence." [speech excerpts] "That's good stuff. Romney has consistently talked about hope and optimism. He did it during the GOP debate and he did it again Saturday at Regent. It may be a speech that is remembered for a long time."

I’ve met plenty of people who “use Christian terms”. When I talk to them or exchange posts with them, I wouldn’t call them Christian either. But as far as I can tell, it ain’t my call nor would I dare to be so arrogant as to insist I knew for sure.

It is amazing and rather telling that each time I share my heart-felt beliefs I am assualted by others. I, as a follwer of Jesus Christ, allow others to believe as they may and willnot criticize others who have a different interpretation of Jesus Christ. I am not in the least concerned if others believe me to be Christian or not. I believe in a God that can discern the heart and knows of my love for Him. As for the atonement, it is false to say that we do not believe it is through the grace of God we are saved...after doing all we can do including repentance.

The Quran describes Jesus as "the word of God", as "the spirit of God", as a "sign of God", and it calls him the Messiash. I don't think it uses the specific phrase "son of God". You can point out that the Mormon church does, but the Mormon church also says that God the father was a man and that Jesus was conceived through "holy sperm".

Honestly, the point I was making is that if you consider Mormons to be "Christian" based on the fact they're followers of Jesus, you'd have to accept Muslims as "Christian" too.

I was a Christian when I was in the Mainstream religion and I am still a Chirstian as LDS I know of what I speak!

The Lord never changed his church those who opposed revised his ordiance after the Priesthood was withdrawn from the earth they reverted back to the lesser law as in the time of Moses.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints restored the higher law!

Correct. We believe that God, the Father, and Jesus, His Son, are two distinct individuals.

I read from the scriptures daily, pray multiple times a day and try very hard to practice what I preach. Others will never deter me from believing what the spirit of God has spoken to my heart. I am done with this discussion. I am amazed at the hatred shown by some on this site.

Don't be sensitive. You are not being personally assaulted. You are simply being asked to defend your beliefs and if they fall short you are being told where you are in error.

I understand your point but who are you to determine my “error?” Should I believe you over the Spitit? I am more than sure that I could tell you where you are in error with your beliefs if you shared them and if I wanted to. But I am more into building up that tearing down.

I am someone who is showing you where your beliefs differ from the Bible.

For example, believing that men can achieve god-hood is error which deviates dramatically from the Bible.
