In the first poll of New Hampshire Republican Primary voters since the GOP debate at the Reagan Library last week, Mitt Romney, former Governor of neighboring Massachusetts, jumps into a breathtaking lead over Rudolph Giuliani and John McCain, according to a SurveyUSA poll of likely NH Republican Primary voters conducted exclusively for WBZ-TV Boston.
Romney gets 32% today, measurably better than Giuliani at 23% and McCain at 22%, who tie for 2nd place. Actor Fred Thompson, who was not included in previous SurveyUSA polling of New Hampshire GOP Primary voters, but who is included in these results, finishes 4th, at 11%.
Who is Up? Who is Down?
Compared to a NH SurveyUSA WBZ-TV poll released 1/29/07, Giuliani and McCain have each lost 10 points. The two had been tied for first, 33% then for Giuliani, 32% then for McCain.
Romney is up 11 points, from 21% then to 32% now. That's a 21-point swing to Romney among likely GOP Primary voters.
What's changed?
In January, Romney got 16% among those in favor of stem-cell research. Today Romney gets 31% among those in favor of stem-cell research. Romney's debate answer on this question -- so scholarly that moderator Chris Matthews momentarily thought Romney had mis-heard the question -- appears to have resonated. But at the same time, Romney's stem-cell answer has not cost Romney support among pro-life voters.
Romney gets 38% among pro-life voters today, 19 points higher than McCain, 22 points higher than Giuliani and 26 points higher than Thompson, who are clustered far back.
Among the 60% of NH Primary voters who say they are Conservative, Romney gets 35% today, 15 points better than McCain, 18 points better than Giuliani, 21 points better than Thompson.
Giuliani's support skews young. McCain's support skews old. Romney's support is even across all age groups.
Because SurveyUSA's questionnaire in January did not explicitly name Thompson, SurveyUSA does not here produce tracking graphs, since an exact, apples-to-apples track, is not possible. However, you may access the 1/29/07 New Hampshire data here.
Running for Governor of Massachusetts? Pro-legal abortion.
Deciding whether to run for reelection or run for president? Equivocating, talking pro-life but saying his position hadn't changed, leaving wiggle room to go either way.
Deciding not to run for reelection (and run for prez instead)? Supposedly pro-life, complete with a conversion story of dubious nature.
And THAT is why no one with a brain would believe him now. He's fooled plenty of people in his political career, and anyone who doesn't look back and see the phony in action is being wilfully ignorant.
Why do you keep distorting and lying and denying the facts?Which facts am I "distorting and lying and denying"?
I think that the reverse of what you claim to know is more likely the case. People who were pro-choice and switched to pro-life usually do so over time and after much discussion with family and friends, and, again usually, after a personal experience with the abortion issue. In any event, I believe that Mitt will be a strong advocate for pro-life.
The more you know about him, the more there is to like!Indeed! :) I watched Mitt and Ann (Mitt's wife) on H&C last night. They were superb, Ann's a sweetheart!
Trying to claim that Mitt's strong, consistent pro-abortion stand was many years ago, when in fact it persisted until very recently, when Mitt decided to run for president.
In any event, I believe that Mitt will be a strong advocate for pro-life.
Yeah, you're a True Believer all right; you've clearly had more than your share of kool-aide.
I live in NH. Of the candidates in the race now, Romney is the most likely to beat Hilary/Obama/Whoever that the Dems will nominate. I care about conservatism but Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter are not likely to win as no one knows who they are... Rudy is too liberal (ex. abortion) and McCain lost me with campaign finance reform... I am interested in learning more about Thompson should he get in the race...
It is less than 60 days to the 4th of July parade in my home town in southern NH. All the candidates will be there. Joe Biden jumped the gun and was there last year... It is a lot of fun to see these people up close...
It’s funny — the more people see and hear from Mitt Romney, the more they like him.
The more they see and hear from Hillary, the more they dislike her.
Keep talking, Hillary!

Wrong! I am not a Mormon and I contributed to his campaign. I am very impressed with his credentials. The man is a goal-oriented solutions guy. It seems that everything he touches turns to gold. Why not let him have a try at our government, which currently seems to break everything it tries to fix (except the military).
Romney has only ONE strength. He has a good fundraiser working for him.
Right now Romney is being pushed because the media outlets want that money.
Thank you much for the heads up. Unfortunately, I was at work. Ann is very likeable and I would like to have seen her interviewed by herself.
Quicksilver: Which facts am I "distorting and lying and denying"?I did not claim that at all. The snippet was from 1994 and was intended to make it appear that he still supports abortion, which isn't true and therefore misleading.JohnnyZ: Trying to claim that Mitt's strong, consistent pro-abortion stand was many years ago, when in fact it persisted until very recently, when Mitt decided to run for president.
Quicksilver: In any event, I believe that Mitt will be a strong advocate for pro-life.I have been pro-life my whole life, and I believe that Mitt Romney would (as president) be a strong advocate for the pro-life cause. If that, in your opinion, makes me a Kool-Aid drinker then I toast you with my favorite flavor: orange. :)JohnnyZ: Yeah, you're a True Believer all right; you've clearly had more than your share of kool-aide.
Got to see that. She is superb!
You agreed with someone dismissing the entire record of Mitt's liberalism and flip-flopping, and cited as your justification the fact that they dared quote one of Mitt's statement's from 1994 -- while omitting to mention all the other well-publicized and widely disseminated quotes and multiple choice positions Mitt has taken over the past 13 years.
Maybe you should get your head out of Mitt's lap and take an honest look at his record, because it's a joke.
No one can look at his record and take him at his word unless they've got some serious personality-worship thing going on.

It is a fact that I researched that information months ago and found it to be misleading.
Maybe you should get your head out of Mitt's lap and take an honest look at his record, because it's a joke. There's no need to be ugly about it. I have looked at Mitt's record and I shall continue to look at it as events unfold. It is still early in the process, but I am very excited by his campaign; as I've said before, I haven't had this much enthusiasm for a candidate since Reagan.
No one can look at his record and take him at his word unless they've got some serious personality-worship thing going on.I disagree with that entirely. :)
