NEWPORT BEACH, California (Reuters) - It could be the defining role of Fred Thompson's varied career -- the reluctant politician who saves a foundering party, restores its conservative principles and keeps it in the White House.
For Thompson, the drama is real enough, even if the final act is uncertain. The former Tennessee senator, Watergate counsel and star of films like "The Hunt for Red October," has been exploring a potential 2008 Republican presidential run and is expected to make his decision known soon.
Thompson's possible candidacy, fueled by conservative dissatisfaction with the current crop of Republican candidates, has generated intense grass-roots interest and curiosity.
Thompson, who plays a district attorney on NBC's "Law and Order," already places third among Republicans in most polls, behind former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain but ahead of eight other candidates, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

That's the way.
ping.
We do not need rescuing. I hope Fred runs, but if he does not, there are others equal to the task at hand.
Do not fall for the MSM drive by propagandists who want us all to feel desperate.
Amazing stat's for one who hasn't joined the political frey as of yet.
As it stands it would be a disservice to us all if he declined the call to run.
Fred Thompson won’t be saving the republican party, He will be saving America as we know it.
Under democrat rule we wil be taxed to death and we will become the nation that doesnt keep its committments. we will become a nation dominated by European ideas of compromise, appeasement , and Global plitics. We will lose sovereignty and eventually be a ward of the UN. Our soldiers will be used to do the bidding of the United nations and not our own. Our defense will drop to dangerous levels ,while at the same time we will become a nation of unarmed slugs.
Eventually the Islamics will become strong enough to insist on Sharia law here as they insist on it in other countries under their heel now. Its isn’t going to be pretty with Hillary or Obama ,neither is worth their salt.
This is the best the party of cut and run , of cowards, of the meek who wish to become enslaved.
Reagan once said peace through strength.
That is the only way we will ever get peace without becoming slaves.
Or, Thompson-Watts, or Thompson-Tancredo.
Hillary was the nominee-apparent since Kerry lost. Now, she is running behind Obama.
If FThompson does jump in, it will initially be a similar love fest the Dems had with Hillary. The vetting will come from other nominees and from the Hillary machine. It will be interesting to see what develops.
I’m not jumping on FThompson or any bandwagon for a long while — to see what all comes out in the vetting process. The first primaries are still more than half-a-year away. And historically, several ‘front runners’ have tripped up and never made it to the nomination. It is still early. And there is still allot of dirt to dig.
It's just unbiased journalism.
Why would one be concerned with the thought of being snookered by the media? /s
Thompson-Watts would make them wet their panties, too.
Worth watching, or as NBC might say: “Must see”
Paul Nitze, the author of the book titled "Peace Through Strength".
BE NOT MISLED-—WE’LL WIN WITH FRED
SO RUN FRED RUN.
Please FReepmail jellybean if you want on/off this list. WARNING: This ping list is EXTREMELY active.
I never said he was the only one who said it, but indeed it is the motto of the USS Ronald Reagan.
And a truer word was never spoken.
What perplexes you, specifically?
I have been laughing a long time, like you I suspect. But I am glad I live in the country and not the city. I have a feeling the $hit is going to hit the proverbial fan, whether the GOP wins the next election or not and maybe because the GOP wins the next election.
We are in for a period of civil disorder, and the MSM as you intimate , is fueling it.
YES--HE CAN... THE DEMS,LIBS,AND MSM ARE AFRAID HE WILL.
